Emma barely slept.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again.
Golden eyes.
Not just one pair.
All of them.
She had tried to convince herself she imagined it. The flickering firelight could have played tricks on her eyes. She had hit her head after all.
But deep down...
She knew what she'd seen.
It wasn't normal.
---
The cabin was silent when Emma opened her eyes the next morning.
Soft sunlight filtered through the curtains, and somewhere outside she could hear birds singing.
She glanced toward the clock on the nightstand.
8:17 A.M.
She slowly sat up, testing her ankle.
It still hurt, but not nearly as badly as yesterday.
The walking stick Finn had carved for her rested against the wall beside the bed.
Smiling to herself, she grabbed it and carefully made her way downstairs.
The smell of pancakes greeted her before she reached the kitchen.
Finn stood at the stove flipping pancakes with surprising skill.
Leo sat at the table, unsuccessfully trying to steal pieces of bacon from a plate.
Finn never looked up.
"If you touch one more piece, I'll make you cook tomorrow."
Leo's hand froze an inch above the plate.
"...You saw that?"
"I always see it."
Emma laughed.
Both men turned toward her.
"Good morning," Finn said warmly.
Leo grinned.
"You look way less dead today."
Finn gave him a look.
Leo winced.
"Sorry."
"I mean...healthier."
Emma chuckled.
"I'll take 'less dead.'"
---
Breakfast was surprisingly normal.
Asher wandered in with messy hair, still half asleep.
Kai appeared a few minutes later without saying a word.
Roman was the last to enter.
He had obviously been outside already.
Tiny droplets of dew clung to the sleeves of his dark flannel shirt.
"Morning," Emma said.
Roman nodded politely.
"How's your ankle?"
"Better."
Finn smiled proudly.
"I told you my herbs work."
"They really do."
Kai raised an eyebrow.
"They heal sprains."
"They don't perform miracles."
Finn rolled his eyes.
"You could at least pretend to appreciate me."
"I appreciate that you make breakfast."
"I knew it."
"You only love me for my cooking."
Leo gasped dramatically.
"Our healer has discovered betrayal."
Even Roman let the corner of his mouth twitch upward.
Emma watched them carefully.
They teased one another like brothers.
Real brothers.
But every now and then...
One of them would pause.
Tilt his head slightly.
Almost as if listening to something she couldn't hear.
---
Later that afternoon, Emma sat on the porch wrapped in a blanket.
The forest stretched endlessly beyond the cabin.
It was beautiful.
Peaceful.
Almost magical.
Roman emerged from a nearby woodshed carrying an axe.
"I'm going to chop more firewood."
"You should stay close to the cabin."
Emma nodded.
"I wasn't planning on going anywhere."
Roman hesitated.
"For now..."
"I mean it."
"There are places in these woods that aren't safe."
She smiled.
"I've already learned that lesson."
He gave a small nod before disappearing toward the chopping block.
Emma watched him split logs with effortless precision.
Every swing was controlled.
Powerful.
Graceful.
He made it look easy.
---
By evening, dark clouds had gathered again.
Not another storm.
Just enough to hide the rising moon.
Dinner ended earlier than usual.
Finn collected the dishes.
Asher volunteered to dry them.
Leo disappeared upstairs.
Kai stood near the front window, staring into the forest.
Roman seemed...
Restless.
Emma noticed him checking the sky every few minutes.
Finally she asked,
"Is everything okay?"
Roman answered a little too quickly.
"Yes."
Kai glanced at him.
"No."
The room became awkwardly quiet.
Emma frowned.
"What?"
Asher forced a smile.
"Nothing."
"We're just..."
Finn interrupted.
"Tired."
Emma wasn't convinced.
Not even a little.
---
An hour later...
She woke to voices.
Low.
Urgent.
She slipped quietly out of bed.
The hallway was empty.
The voices were coming from downstairs.
Emma carefully descended the staircase.
She stopped halfway.
The front door stood open.
Cold night air drifted into the cabin.
Roman stood outside with the others.
The moon had finally broken through the clouds.
It was enormous.
Silver.
Beautiful.
Emma couldn't hear every word.
Only fragments.
"...can't keep hiding..."
"...she'll find out..."
"...too dangerous..."
"...the moon..."
Curiosity got the better of her.
She stepped closer to the open doorway.
A twig snapped beneath her walking stick.
Every head turned toward her.
Roman's face fell.
"Emma—"
It happened instantly.
A deep growl erupted from somewhere in the trees.
Not one wolf.
Several.
Leo doubled over.
Asher grabbed the porch railing.
Finn stumbled backward.
Kai cursed under his breath.
Emma's eyes widened.
"What..."
Roman clenched his fists.
"Go inside."
"No."
His eyes flashed gold.
"Emma."
She froze.
His pupils narrowed.
His muscles trembled beneath his shirt.
Another growl echoed through the forest.
This one answered by five voices.
The sound...
Was coming from them.
Emma took a frightened step backward.
"No..."
Roman's breathing became uneven.
"I'm sorry."
His voice sounded strained.
Painful.
As though he were fighting something inside himself.
Then—
Bones cracked.
Emma screamed.
Roman dropped to one knee.
His shoulders broadened.
His hands twisted unnaturally.
Dark fur spread across his arms.
She stumbled backward until her back hit the cabin wall.
"No..."
"No..."
"This isn't real..."
Asher cried out as silver fur burst through his clothes.
Finn collapsed onto all fours.
Kai's transformation was almost silent, his body changing with practiced control.
Leo whimpered, his younger wolf struggling against the change.
Within moments...
Five enormous wolves stood where five men had been.
Emma couldn't breathe.
Her heart hammered so loudly she couldn't hear anything else.
Roman's wolf was the largest.
Jet black.
Powerfully built.
His golden eyes never left her.
Not with hunger.
Not with anger.
With concern.
He took one careful step toward her.
Emma screamed.
"Stay away from me!"
Roman stopped immediately.
The other wolves remained where they were.
None of them moved.
None of them growled.
None of them threatened her.
They simply watched.
As if waiting for her to decide.
Emma shook uncontrollably.
"Werewolves..."
The word barely escaped her lips.
Her mind raced.
The glowing eyes.
The strange strength.
The warnings about the forest.
Everything suddenly made sense.
She looked from one wolf to the next.
Then back to Roman.
"You..."
Her voice cracked.
"You're all werewolves."
Roman lowered his massive head.
A silent acknowledgment.
Emma backed toward the open cabin door.
"I..."
"I need..."
She couldn't finish.
Her world had just shattered.
Nothing she believed about the world made sense anymore.
Roman slowly shifted back into his human form, wincing as the transformation reversed.
Grabbing a blanket from the porch, he wrapped it around himself before taking another cautious step.
"I know you're frightened."
"You have every right to be."
"But please believe one thing."
His golden eyes met hers.
"We have never intended to hurt you."
Emma stared at him, speechless.
Outside, the full moon bathed the clearing in silver light.
Inside, the cabin that had begun to feel like a refuge suddenly felt full of impossible secrets.
And Emma realized the five men who had saved her life...
Were the very wolves she'd feared were hunting her.
