Lost
The first crackle of thunder rolled across the mountains just as Emma Carter looked up from her camera. "Seriously?" she muttered, glancing toward the dark clouds that had gathered far faster than the weather forecast had promised. Only an hour ago, the afternoon sky had been a brilliant blue. Sunlight filtered through the towering pines, illuminating patches of wildflowers that had lured her deeper and deeper into the forest. She'd spent the last three days photographing wildlife for a local nature magazine, hoping to capture a rare red fox rumored to live near the northern ridge. Instead, she'd captured hundreds of photographs of deer, hawks, and squirrels. No fox. A cold gust swept through the trees, sending leaves swirling around her boots. Emma zipped her camera safely into her backpack and pulled her rain jacket tighter around her shoulders. "I should head back." The parking area couldn't be more than two miles away. At least...she hoped it wasn't. Another rumble echoed overhead. This one was louder. Closer. The forest suddenly felt different. The birds had stopped singing. Even the insects had fallen silent. Emma frowned. Animals always sensed storms before people did. She picked up her pace. --- Rain began as a drizzle. Within minutes, it became a downpour. The narrow hiking trail she'd followed all afternoon disappeared beneath rushing water and mud. Emma stopped beneath an enormous pine tree and spun in a slow circle. "This isn't right..." The trail marker she'd passed earlier should have been here. Instead... Nothing. Only endless trees. Her stomach tightened. "No..." She reached for her phone. No signal. Of course. She opened the map she'd downloaded earlier. The screen froze. Then went black. The battery had finally died. Emma laughed once—a short, nervous sound. "Perfect." Lightning split the sky. The deafening c***k made her jump. She started walking again, choosing what looked like the gentlest slope. If she kept moving downhill, she'd eventually reach a road. At least that was the plan. --- An hour later... Emma wasn't so sure. Everything looked the same. Towering pines. Thick underbrush. Dark, rain-soaked rocks. The storm had turned late afternoon into something that felt much closer to night. She stumbled over a root hidden beneath wet leaves. "Oof!" She caught herself against a tree, breathing hard. "I'm okay," she whispered to no one. Except... She wasn't. Her ankle throbbed. Her clothes were soaked. She was cold. And she was completely, hopelessly lost. --- Far away, five wolves moved silently through the forest. Massive. Powerful. Almost invisible among the shadows. Roman Blackwood led the pack. Even in his wolf form, he carried himself with quiet confidence. His black coat glistened with rain as golden eyes scanned every movement in the woods. Behind him padded Asher, silver-gray and restless. Finn, smaller than the others, kept close while sniffing the damp air. Kai moved like a ghost through the trees, never making a sound. Young Leo bounded ahead before Roman's sharp growl reminded him to stay with the pack. They weren't hunting. They were patrolling. Storms often drove outsiders into their territory. Roman intended to make sure none of them stayed. Suddenly, Finn stopped. His nose lifted. He inhaled deeply. "Someone's here," he said through the mind-link shared by the pack. "A deer?" Asher guessed. Finn shook his head. "No." Another breath. "...Human." Kai's ears flattened instantly. "They're too close." "They'll leave," Asher replied. Roman remained silent. He had caught the scent now too. Rain. Pine. Blood. His head snapped toward the eastern ridge. "She's injured." --- Emma limped over another fallen log, every step sending pain shooting through her ankle. "I really picked the worst day for this," she whispered. The rain had finally begun to ease. Fog drifted between the trees. Everything was eerily quiet. Then she heard it. A low howl. Her heart stopped. Another answered. Closer. "Wolves..." She knew wolves usually avoided people. Usually. But they hunted in packs. And she was alone. Emma forced herself forward. Faster. Her injured ankle protested with every step. Branches clawed at her jacket. Her breathing grew ragged. The howls stopped. Silence. That somehow felt even worse. She glanced over her shoulder. Nothing. Just trees. She turned back— Her boot landed on slick moss covering a rock. The world lurched. Emma cried out as she tumbled down a steep embankment. Branches scraped her arms. Sharp rocks slammed into her side. She rolled until her shoulder struck the trunk of a fallen tree. Everything went still. For several long seconds, she couldn't breathe. Then the pain arrived all at once. Her ankle. Her shoulder. A cut along her forehead where warm blood mixed with rainwater. Emma tried to stand. The moment she put weight on her ankle, it buckled beneath her. She collapsed back to the ground. "No..." Tears blurred her vision. Not from the pain. From fear. She was alone. Lost. No phone. No shelter. No way to call for help. Darkness was coming. "I don't want to die here," she whispered, her voice breaking. Her eyelids felt heavy. Just for a minute... She'd rest. --- Roman reached the bottom of the ravine first. There she was. A human woman. Curled against a fallen log. Motionless. Rain plastered chestnut-brown hair across her face, and blood trickled from a cut near her temple. Finn hurried to her side, carefully sniffing the air around her. "She's alive." "Barely," Kai muttered. Leo looked between Emma and Roman. "We have to help her." Kai's amber eyes narrowed. "Absolutely not." "She's human." "If she wakes up and tells people where we live, everything we've protected dies." Asher sighed. "He's not wrong." Roman stared at the unconscious woman. She looked exhausted. Cold. Fragile. A tiny frown creased her brow even in unconsciousness, as if she were still afraid. He should leave her. That was the safest choice. The smartest choice. The only choice. Finn stepped closer. "If we leave her here..." He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't have to. Roman already knew. She wouldn't survive the night. The alpha closed his eyes for a brief moment. Duty demanded one thing. His conscience demanded another. Finally, he opened his eyes. "We're leaving." Finn looked devastated. Roman turned away. Then... The wind shifted. Emma let out the faintest whimper. A sound so quiet it almost disappeared beneath the rain. Roman froze. Something deep inside him stirred. His wolf. Protect her. The command wasn't spoken. It was instinct. Powerful. Unrelenting. Roman exhaled slowly before turning back toward the unconscious woman. He met each of his pack members' eyes. "We're not leaving her." Kai stared in disbelief. "Roman—" "We take her to the cabin." "She stays until she's healed." "And then..." He looked down at Emma once more. "...we decide what comes next." Without another word, Roman gently lifted Emma into his arms. She was lighter than he expected. As if the forest itself had carried away her strength. Completely unaware of the wolves surrounding her, Emma rested her head against Roman's chest. The pack disappeared into the trees. Behind them, the storm finally began to pass. Ahead of them... None of their lives would ever be the same.
