Open Hearts

The next morning, an uneasy silence settled over the cabin. The hunters hadn't returned. Not yet. But everyone knew they would. Roman had doubled the patrols around their territory, and no one ventured far from the cabin alone. Even so, life had to continue. There were meals to cook. Wood to chop. Laundry to wash. And somehow, in the middle of the growing tension... The little pack still found reasons to laugh. --- Roman stood on the porch studying a hand-drawn map spread across the railing. Emma stepped outside with two steaming mugs. "I think I'm getting pretty good at knowing when you need tea." Roman accepted one with a grateful smile. "I won't argue with that." She leaned against the railing beside him. "What are you looking at?" "The mountain trails." He pointed to several winding paths. "If we ever need to leave quickly, these are the safest routes." Emma followed his finger across the map. "You know every inch of these woods." "I've spent most of my life here." "You never wanted to leave?" Roman looked out over the endless forest. "I used to." "When I was younger." "What changed?" He smiled faintly. "I realized this isn't just a forest." "It's home." Emma glanced toward the cabin. "I think...I'm starting to understand." Roman looked at her, surprised. "You do?" She nodded. "It feels peaceful here." His wolf stirred happily at her words. --- Later that morning, Asher found Emma reading one of the books from the cabin's shelves. "Come on." She looked up. "Where?" "It's a surprise." She laughed. "That's never reassuring." "I promise." "No danger." "Probably." Emma narrowed her eyes. "'Probably?'" "Definitely." He grinned. "I think." Twenty minutes later, they stood in a wide meadow filled with wildflowers. Emma gasped. "Asher..." "It's beautiful." "I know." He plopped onto the grass. "This is my favorite place." She sat beside him. "Why?" He looked toward the sky. "When life gets heavy..." "I come here." "It reminds me the world is still beautiful." Emma smiled softly. "You hide a thoughtful side pretty well." "Don't tell the others." "I have a reputation to protect." She laughed. Their conversation drifted from favorite foods to childhood memories. For the first time, Asher admitted something he'd never shared before. "I joke all the time because..." He picked at a blade of grass. "If people are laughing..." "They're usually not hurting." Emma looked at him. "So you make everyone smile." He shrugged. "I try." Without thinking, she reached over and squeezed his hand. "It works." Asher smiled. Not his usual playful grin. A real one. --- That afternoon, Finn invited Emma back into his herb garden. "I have something to show you." He carefully led her to the far corner where dozens of tiny blue flowers bloomed. "I've never seen these before." "They only bloom once each summer." He gently picked one. "My mother called them Moon Blossoms." Emma accepted the flower. "They're gorgeous." Finn hesitated. "You know..." "I was scared when Roman brought you here." She looked at him in surprise. "You were?" He nodded. "I worried you'd be terrified of us." "I was." He laughed quietly. "Fair enough." "But now..." He smiled. "I can't imagine the cabin without you." Emma felt warmth spread through her chest. "I don't think I can imagine it either." --- Near sunset, Kai approached Emma while she stacked firewood beside the porch. "I need more logs from the north trail." She blinked. "You want my help?" "You've been asking to do more." "I have." "Come on." The walk was mostly silent. Emma didn't mind. Kai wasn't a man who filled quiet moments with unnecessary conversation. Eventually she asked, "Why do you hate humans?" Kai didn't answer immediately. When he finally spoke, his voice was almost too quiet to hear. "I was twelve." "My parents were killed by hunters." Emma stopped walking. "Kai..." "They thought they were killing wolves." His jaw tightened. "They never knew the truth." "I'm so sorry." He stared ahead. "For years..." "I believed every human was the same." "And now?" He looked at her. "Now I know I was wrong." Emma smiled sadly. "I'm glad." "So am I." It wasn't much. Just three words. But for Kai... It was everything. As they headed back toward the cabin, Emma realized something. Kai was no longer walking behind her. He was walking beside her. --- That evening, Leo found Emma sitting on the dock overlooking the lake. He carried two fishing rods. "Redemption?" Emma laughed. "You still haven't forgiven me for throwing your fishing rod into the lake?" "You traumatized that poor fish." She smiled. "I guess I owe them an apology." This time she actually caught something. A small trout. Leo cheered so loudly birds flew from nearby trees. "You did it!" Emma held up the fish proudly. "I actually did!" Leo grinned from ear to ear. "You know..." "I used to think the cabin was too quiet." "What do you mean?" "After everyone lost their families..." "We stopped laughing as much." His smile faded slightly. "You brought that back." Emma's eyes softened. "I didn't do anything." "You did." "You smiled." "And somehow..." "We all started smiling again." Without warning, Leo wrapped her in a quick hug. "Thank you." Emma hugged him back. --- That night, the six of them gathered around the fireplace. Leo challenged everyone to charades. Asher pretended to be a chicken. Finn guessed "angry goose." Kai actually laughed. Roman nearly choked on his tea trying not to. Emma laughed until tears filled her eyes. The cabin echoed with warmth. With joy. With something none of them had expected to find again. Hope. --- Later, after everyone had gone to bed, Emma remained on the porch staring at the stars. Roman quietly joined her. "You've been spending time with everyone." She smiled. "I guess I have." "Asher showed me his meadow." "Finn introduced me to his flowers." "Kai trusted me enough to tell me about his parents." "Leo caught a fish with me." Roman looked at her carefully. "And me?" She turned toward him. "You've been giving me something since the day we met." "What?" "A place where I feel safe." Roman's breath caught. Emma stepped a little closer. "I don't know what this Moon Bond means." "I don't know what tomorrow brings." "But I do know this." She looked back toward the glowing cabin windows. "I care about every one of you." Roman smiled. Not the restrained, almost-hidden smile he usually wore. A real one. Warm. Unguarded. "You've become part of this family, Emma." She smiled back. "I think..." "I already was." Inside the cabin, Finn happened to glance through the window. He smiled quietly to himself. The Moon Goddess hadn't been wrong. The bond wasn't forcing hearts together. It had simply recognized hearts that were already finding one another. Outside, hidden beyond the tree line, four pairs of human eyes watched the cabin through the darkness. One of the hunters lowered his binoculars. "There." "I told you." "Something isn't right about those people." Another hunter nodded. "What do we do?" The leader's expression hardened. "We find out what they're hiding." As the lights inside the cabin slowly went out one by one, danger crept ever closer. The pack had opened their hearts. Now they would have to fight to protect them.
