The Cold Billionaire
Clara Vance stared at the massive iron gates of the Sterling Mansion, clutching her faded backpack. She was down to her last twenty dollars, facing eviction, and her younger brother’s hospital bills were piling up. This interview was her absolute last hope. Taking a deep breath, she was led inside by Harrison, the stern head butler. The mansion was breathtakingly grand, but it felt freezing cold and completely devoid of life. Harrison knocked on a pair of heavy oak doors. "Enter," a deep, chilling voice echoed. Clara stepped into a dimly lit study. Sitting behind a massive mahogany desk was Alexander Sterling—the city’s most ruthless billionaire tycoon. He was breathtakingly handsome, with a razor-sharp jawline and piercing, stormy gray eyes that scanned her with cold calculation. "Clara Vance," Alexander spoke, his voice heavy with authority. "You are twenty-two, have no elite certifications, and zero high-profile references. I have fired ten of the country’s top nannies in the last six months. Why should I hire you?" Clara suppressed her fear, looking him straight in the eye. "Because those nannies looked at your son as a paycheck. He is a four-year-old boy who lost his mother, Mr. Sterling. He doesn't need a textbook professor. He needs love and a sense of home." Alexander stood up, his towering six-foot-three frame casting a shadow over her. "I don't pay for 'love', Miss Vance. I pay for efficiency and absolute obedience. I don't need a—" Suddenly, the heavy doors burst open. A tiny four-year-old boy with messy dark hair stood in the doorway, wearing a dinosaur sweater and pouting fiercely. A panicked maid followed, gasping, "Young Master Leo refused to eat his lunch, sir!" Alexander pinched his nose. "Go back to your room, Leo." But Leo didn't look at his father. His stormy gray eyes locked onto Clara. Ignoring the billionaire, Clara slowly knelt down to the little boy's eye level. She offered a warm, gentle smile. "Hi Leo. That’s a really cool Velociraptor on your sweater. But even fast dinosaurs need food. Why didn't you want your lunch?" Leo looked at his small shoes. "The soup looked like green slime. And... nobody would eat it with me. Daddy is always working." Clara’s heart ached. She pulled a small tin from her bag. "Green slime sounds terrible. But I have a secret. I make the fluffiest chocolate-chip pancakes in the world. Want to be my assistant and make some?" Leo’s eyes lit up. Without a second thought, the nanny-hating little boy ran forward and threw his small arms around Clara’s neck. "Pancakes! I want pancakes!" Over the boy's shoulder, Clara saw Alexander staring in utter shock. His notoriously difficult, silent son was hugging a complete stranger. Alexander cleared his throat, his expression instantly hardening again. "Leo, wait outside with Harrison." Once the boy left, Alexander stepped closer to Clara, his intense gaze locking onto hers. "My son has not smiled like that in two years. I will hire you on a one-month probation. Your salary will be five times the market rate, with an immediate advance tonight." Clara’s heart soared with relief. "Thank you, Mr. Sterling." "Do not thank me yet," Alexander warned, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly whisper. "You are here for Leo, and Leo only. Never interfere with my life, and most importantly... never cross the line with me. Do we understand each other?" An electric spark shot through Clara's veins under his intense gaze. "Crystal clear, Mr. Sterling," she whispered. But looking into his mesmerizing, icy eyes, she felt a terrifying wave of realization—keeping that promise was going to be the hardest thing she'd ever done.
