CHAPTER 2:THE BANNER
Lily finally got to school. It was the day before her last paper. All she needed to do was endure today and tomorrow, and then she would be free for the holidays. Her heart kept beating fast after the video went viral. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad as she thinks. But the moment she stepped into the university gate, she knew today would be hell. Everyone stopped. Then the whispers started. "Look, it's her... the toilet girl is here..." "Is that the girl from the video?" Lily's chest tightened. She held her bag tightly and walked faster. In the hallway, juniors ran past her holding their noses. "Eww! Don't touch her!" She entered her lecture hall and saw it. Someone had written on her desk with a marker: _"TOILET QUEEN - RESERVED FOR LILY"_ She wiped it with her palm, her hands shaking. Professor Bello looked at her with pity. "Lily, are you okay? Do you need to step out?" "I'm fine, ma'am," Lily whispered. Professor John looked at her with disgust. "Miss Lily, if you have issues with classmates, you shouldn't bring it to social media for attention. At 20 years old, you should be more mature than this." "I didn't post it, sir," Lily said quietly, her eyes filled with tears. "Jennifer did. She's an influencer. She posted it on her t****k and it went viral overnight because she has over 300k followers." She couldn't concentrate. Papers were thrown at her back. One said: _You went viral, toilet girl! 50k views already!_ At lunch break, she went to the basketball field to get some air. That's when her world collapsed. A crowd was gathered, laughing and recording. Hanging on the basketball net was a huge banner. It was a screenshot from the video — Lily on the toilet floor of the university restroom, soaked in dirty water, crying, while Jennifer stood over her laughing. Bold red letters on top: _"CONGRATULATIONS LILY! OUR UNIVERSITY'S TOILET QUEEN OF THE YEAR! 50K VIEWS!"_ Jennifer stood in front of it with her friends, holding her phone like she was live-streaming. "Everyone, give it up for our celebrity! She finally made our university famous!" Jennifer announced, laughing into her t****k live. "Guys, she is here live! The toilet queen herself!" Comments were flying on her live. "Jennifer, please take it down," Lily begged, tears falling. "Please, I'm begging you." "Take it down? Why? You should thank me. I made you popular. My followers love you," Jennifer smiled sweetly for the camera. "You poured toilet water on me!" "It was just a joke! You're taking it too personally," Tola, Jennifer's friend, laughed. "Jennifer was just creating content!" "You were my best friend since we were six! How could you do this to me?" Lily screamed. "Best friend? Don't make me laugh. I only pitied you," Jennifer said coldly, then leaned close and whispered so the live wouldn't hear, "I will not take it down. And if you try to touch it, I'll pour another bucket on you, and make sure it gets into your mouth. Try me, toilet girl. My fans will love part two." Lily pushed through the crowd and ran home, sobbing. She didn't even write her paper. She left everything behind. Amanda was folding clothes when Lily banged the door open, crying loudly. "Lily? You were supposed to be writing your paper! Why are you back so early? What happened?" Lily threw her bag and fell to the floor. "I'm just tired, Mom! I'm tired of Jennifer bullying me! I'm so tired!" Amanda ran to her and held her tightly. "Shhh... my baby... stop crying... it's okay..." Lily sobbed into her mother's dress. "Why does she keep hurting me? Why?" Amanda wiped her tears. "It's okay. It's just one paper tomorrow, your last paper, and then we will go to your grandmother's place for the holidays to rest. You need a break from this university and from that girl. Okay?" Lily nodded slowly, still trembling. "Okay, Mom..." Amanda kissed her hair. "Tomorrow is your last paper. After that, we travel. No more stress." *THE FAKE APOLOGY* Lily's last paper was supposed to be her happiest day. But it wasn't. She walked into the university compound with her head down. Her clothes were clean today, but her heart was not. Everyone stared. Whispers everywhere. "Isn't that the toilet girl?" "She is trending on t****k!" She entered the exam hall. Jennifer was already there, sitting with her friends, laughing. When Jennifer saw Lily, she stood up. Everyone went silent. Jennifer walked towards Lily slowly, with a sweet smile. Too sweet. "Lily," she said softly. "Can we talk?" Lily stepped back. "I want to apologize," Jennifer continued, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear. "What I did yesterday was bad. I was joking. I didn't know it would go that far because my followers kept sharing it." Her friends nodded. "Yes, Lily, she is sorry. Forgive her." Lily looked at Jennifer's face. For a second, she thought maybe Jennifer had changed. "It's okay," Lily whispered. Jennifer's smile widened. She grabbed Lily's hands. "To prove I'm sorry, I'm throwing a small party at my house today. For the end of exams. You must come. Please. Just you, me, and a few close friends." "A party?" Lily asked, confused. "Yes. Let me make it up to you. I will even take down the video if you come." Lily hesitated. "Okay. I'll come." Jennifer hugged her tightly. But behind Lily's back, Jennifer winked at her friends and mouthed "She fell for it." The exam ended. Everyone screamed with joy. Exams were over. Lily rushed home, her heart beating fast. She brought out a simple blue gown. Amanda saw her. "Lily, what are you doing? I told you to start packing for grandma's place. We are leaving soon for the holidays." "I'm going to Jennifer's house. She is throwing a party for the end of exams. She apologized and said she will delete the video." Amanda's face changed immediately. She dropped the clothes she was folding. "What? Jennifer? The same Jennifer that poured toilet water on you? And posted your video on t****k?" Lily froze. "You... you saw the video?" Lily whispered. "Yes, I saw it! My friend sent it to me! 50,000 views in one day because that girl is an influencer! My own daughter, sitting on a toilet floor, covered in dirty water, while that wicked girl was laughing for content!" "Mom, I didn't want you to see it," Lily cried quietly. "And today you tell me you want to go to that same girl's party?" Amanda shouted. "That girl has bullied you since you were six!" "She sounded sincere, Mom! Not everyone is wicked like you think!" "I'm trying to protect you!" "You are always telling me what to do! I'm twenty! I'm not a baby!" Lily yelled. "For once, let me make my own decision! For once, let me have friends!" Amanda was shocked. "Lily!" Amanda called after her, crying. But Lily banged the door and left. Jennifer's house was loud. Music. Lights. So many people, some holding phones, recording. "Lily is here!" Jennifer shouted. "My special guest!" Lily sat, nervous, holding her bag. Jennifer brought her a drink. "Drink. Enjoy." Lily smiled and took a sip. Just then, someone purposely bumped into her. The drink spilled all over her blue gown and the white rug. "Oh my God! Lily! You ruined my mom's expensive rug!" Jennifer shouted, but she was laughing and pointing her phone at Lily. "Guys, look! Live content!" "I... someone pushed me," Lily stammered. "You always ruin things," one friend said. "Now you have to clean it," Jennifer said, her sweet voice gone. "What?" Lily asked, tears coming. "You heard me. Clean it. Lick it if you have to. For my followers." Everyone laughed and started recording. "I won't," Lily shook her head. Jennifer walked closer and pushed her hard. Lily fell to the floor, on her knees. "Clean it! You smelling pig! You think my apology was real? You are so stupid! I needed more views!" She kicked the spilled drink towards Lily. Food was also on the floor now. "Clean it with your gown! Drag yourself and clean it!" Lily cried. She tried to stand, but they held her down. "Please, stop," Lily begged. They dragged her on the floor. Her gown tore. Her knees scraped the rug. She was cleaning their mess with her body while they laughed and went live on t****k. "Enough! Get out. You are ruining my party," Jennifer finally said. Lily dragged herself up. Her gown was stained. Her knees were bleeding slightly. Her eyes were swollen. She ran out barefooted, all the way home, crying loudly on the street. When she got home, Amanda was in the living room, waiting, eyes swollen. When Amanda saw her daughter like that, stained, torn, crying, her heart broke. "Lily! What happened again?!" Lily fell into her mother's arms and cried like a baby. "Mom, I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! You were right! You were right! I should have listened to you!" Amanda hugged her tight. "It's okay, my baby. It's okay." "Mom, I'm ready," Lily sobbed. "I'm ready to go to grandma's place. Let's go. I want to leave this place. I don't want to stay here again." Amanda stroked her hair. "We will go tomorrow," Amanda whispered. "We will go a day before we planned for the holidays. I promise, no one will hurt you there. You will rest well and come back stronger when school resumes." Lily nodded, her shoulders shaking violently.
