Prologue: I Didn't Sign Up For This
To ordinary people, Time is a straight line. It just starts from one point and goes on and on and on. But not for me. Time is a bunch of jumbled entangled lines that only I have access to, anywhere and anytime I want. --- I leaned against the iron bars in front of me, cringing at the parts that touched my skin. A few guards were chatting about in the room's lit corner. The cobblestone walls seemed to fall apart, but everything was still standing. Small traces of moss you can find in the corners of my little cell, and everything smelled like old beer and burnt s**t. I 100% didn't sign up for this. I coughed to gain the guards' attention. "Ah-hem, HEY!!" I shouted, knocking on the bars. "Let me out! I'll give you money... or something..." One guard scoffed. "We're under strict orders not to release you, kid," He said in a gruff, tired tone. "It's what 'cha get for stealing those spears-" "—but in my defense, THEY WERE SHINY!" Now, you must be wondering, 'Why were you trying to steal spears?' Well, they were shiny. I like shiny things. And I bring souvenirs from every foreign place I go. Another guard prodded a long sword through the bars. I clicked my tongue and glared at the blade inches away from my stomach. "You've no right to raise your voice, young man." He snapped, obviously annoyed. I sighed and flicked the tip of the sword, letting it tear through my glove. "This is pretty dull, though, isn't it? You should get it sharpened, my good sir," I licked my chapped lips and shoved my hand in my pocket, grazing my fingers against a pen. I'm glad medieval clothes pockets don't tear easy. "Sorry, guys. I'm a twenty-year-old man with a strict schedule, so I'm going to have to get you all fired." The three guards looked at each other in confusion. "What is 'fired'?" I took a few steps back, ran forward at full speed, and slammed my side into the bars. And with that, I broke the rusty iron bars with ease. What can I say? I'm a muscular guy. Either that, or those bars weren't doing too well themselves. I ran past the guards at full speed, and up towards the narrow stairwell. My eyes tried to adjust to the darkness, and the cold air made my throat go dry. 'God, how far underground did they even build this thing?!' Several minutes have passed, and soon I was at the top of the stairwell where a heavy oak door was standing between me and fresh oxygen. There were no noises outside. So, like any normal person wanting to escape from a royal dungeon in 1499, I (tried to) kick down the door. ... and bruised my foot. I hissed in pain and rubbed my ankle. "Ah- here we go-" Sucking air through my teeth, I limped back to the gate and opened it up. Just as I suspected, there was no one outside. Probably busy watching another public execution. I grinned widely to myself and locked the oak door behind me, silently praying those bastards wouldn't catch up. I took a deep breath of the fresh air. I was now in a part of the castle that led to a courtyard. Hedges, trees, and flowers flooded my sight, and it looked absolutely beautiful. The sky was cloudy, though. Of course, it was. It was England, for God's sake. I took my pen from my pocket, letting a bead of sweat run down the side of my face. "Oh, Thank God you weren't taken... " Then I saw him. A tall guy, about 5'8 (my vision is not flawless, cut me some slack), with gorgeous amber eyes that shined in the sunlight. A tuft of dark hair sat on his head in a messy display that showed he was running his hand through it. His clothes fit to suit the era we were in. A small ponytail hung behind him. He was exiting a door a few feet away from me, so it was no surprise he stared as soon as he saw me. I knew I was gorgeous as well, but damn, I didn't know it was this bad. We locked eyes in complete silence. He raised an eyebrow at me questioningly. All I could hear was the sound of the wind and the leaves rustling in the distance. I broke out of the trance by looking away. "Uh...hey?" "...hey...??" '... Well, this is awkward—" Suddenly, a loud bang resounds from the other side of the door I came out of. "HEY!!" More bangs kept coming. "LET US OUT YOU-" The guard from earlier barked, banging on the door like it's supposed to make me scared. Well, yeah, I was really scared. But that's not the point. The man from earlier had a surprised look on his face as he silently looked back and forth between me and the shaking door. He raised an eyebrow at me. I cursed under my breath and took out the pen, hovering my thumb over the thrusting mechanism. "G'bye!" A 'click' resounded from the pen and my surroundings slowly melted away. The amber-eyed man disappeared, as did the green plants in the background. My breath hitched. I'll never get used to this feeling. Soon, the atmosphere changed from gloomy and thick to warm and spacey. I opened my eyes. I was back in my room.
