My Start
In the year 1830, in Sierra Leone. A beautiful brown-skinned girl, only one and seven, with black afro hair, heart-shaped lips, brown hazel eyes that sparkled underneath the sun, and a perfect body shape every girl dreamed of.
What is better than having a strong chief warrior as your father?
"Father, father." She searched all over the house. One of the maids who was passing by approached her, and she turned to ask.
"Sarah, I am sure you know my father's whereabouts, right?"
The maid looked uncertain. 'Should I speak or remain quiet?' She asked herself silently.
Anna spoke again, this time more firmly and with an added tone, "I believe you are not deaf nor dumb."
Sarah immediately spoke, afraid of unnecessary consequences for her muteness. "My lady, your father has gone out in search of a woman."
Anna looked confused. "A woman? And by that, you mean a woman to marry?"
Sarah lowered her head and spoke so that she alone could hear herself. "Yes, My Lady."
Anna walked away, this time not in her full glory but as a girl who knows the foretold consequences of her father's actions.
--
Later that night, she went to meet her father, who had just returned.
"May I come in, Father?"
He spoke flatly, "Yes."
She knelt to show respect. "How was your day?"
He turned and faced her, "I know why you are here." His voice cracked, exposing his hidden concern or perhaps his own fear. "I want you to know that she is perfect, unlike others."
Anna gazed at him for a long time, unsure of what to say. "Is she from this kingdom?"
He remained silent, knowing where this was headed, and it was then Anna knew there was no persuading him out of this.
--
The next day, down in the kitchen, the maids gossiped in hushed tones.
"What will this woman be like?" One of the maids asked.
"I sure hope it is not like the last woman." All the maids looked at Sarah in surprise.
"There was a last woman? What was she like?" Zen asked.
Sarah's face went down. "Brutal, we all know Lord Denmarin went to war most of the time. Well, her name was Kate, at least we thought. Lord Denmarin was not careful in his search for a woman. He was caught up between wars and getting a mother for Lady Anna, so who could blame his carelessness? One day, when he was sent to the battlegrounds on the eastern coast by the king, Kate snuck Lady Anna away and sold her off."
All the maids gasped loudly. "Sold off?" John asked.
"Yes, sold off," Sarah continued, "it was one of the guards of a white foreigner that brought her back; rumors had it that it was the guard to a prince in Germany who brought her back."
Zen was confused. "A guard from Germany? Wait, she had already reached that far?"
Sarah looked up at him, "No, she was on the boarding ship, you fool, but I know for sure it was a white man who returned with her."
John asked, "How old was she?"
Sarah replied quickly, "Nine."
Before anyone could ask a question, the head of the maids came in, "Is there anything else you all can do besides gossip?"
All the maids ran back to their duties.
John said quietly to one of the female maids, "Sarah must have worked here since childhood to know that story."
The maid replied, "She is only three and two, and please do not speak to me." She walked away.
"You are also a maid. Why act like a queen? Tsk." John said to himself.
