Chapter 1 - Thunder Bolts & Lightning, Very Very Frighting
"What I wouldn't give for a much needed break," I thought to myself. The summer weather had been extremely hot and working in an unairconditioned building during 98 degree weather was pure torture. Unfortunately I needed the paycheck at the end of the week, so I pushed my self to my limits heat, sweat, and a few daydreams stolen here and there. Loud machinery buzzed and squealed all around me. The sound of my hammer was the percussion beat in this mechanical symphony of sounds as I hammered dowels into the holes of the boards with dingy white glue oozing out of them. My fingers were covered in dried glue with a tight feeling like a facial peel would cause when it dried. It's too bad that my fingers weren't pretty and smooth after I peeled or washed the glue off of them. As I finished putting the hammer down on top of the buggy full of doweled boards I stood up abruptly as an argument broke out between two of my coworkers. I couldn't make out what they were arguing about this time, but the heat was probably to blame.
I walked over to the rip saw with a feeling of dread rising up in me. I now had to partner up with one of my co workers who had just been involved in the argument. As I took my place on my side of the large monstrous machine, the saw blade was already singing it's tune as it was dividing the block of wood that my co worker had already slung through the machine. I grabbed the newly separated pieces of wood and placed the smooth side to my left and the rough and splintered piece of wood to my right. She kept pushing the pieces of wood through the machine faster than I could handle. I was struggling to neatly stack the pieces of wood on top of each other as the stack of wood kept threatening to lean and fall. I was covered in a thick layer of sweat and sawdust which itched as If I had just run through a patch of poison ivy. When I finally heard the machine's motor winding down I took in a deep breath, thankful that the struggle was over.
Everyone around me was grabbing a broom and I realized it was quitting time. I grabbed up a ratty old broom and began to sweep the curls of sawdust and powdered sawdust into a mountain of sawdust the others had created in the middle of the floor. One of my coworkers swooped in with a large shovel and began to load up a barrel with the sawdust until the floor was mostly clean with a thin film of dust. I felt pure relief rising up through my body as I walked briskly to the time clock. First I grabbed the air hose by the door of the building next to the time clock and began to blow as much sawdust off of me as I could with the pressurized airflow whirring around me. As soon as most of the sawdust was off of me I punched my time card and headed straight for my car. The feeling of hot air blowing against my skin caked in sweat and sawdust felt irritatingly good.
Even after a full day of loud machinery I still cranked up the volume of the radio in my car. It helped me wind down after putting up with the stressful work I had to do during the day as well as the co workers I had to deal with. The 80's rock tunes were familiar and like an old friend they kept me company on the drive home. Before I had realized it I saw it was already time to pull on my driveway. I was grateful to be home and walked absent mindedly inside my apartment. It wasn't much to look at and was filled with hand me down furniture. I wanted better for myself, but my job just didn't pay enough. I knew exactly where I was heading. I made a beeline for my bathroom and peeled off my close before placing my phone on the bathroom counter. After stepping in to the shower I turned on the cold water and allowed it to flow all over my hot skin. I felt my skin react with slight pain at the first touch of the water's cool flow, but the flow was quickly appreciated by my skin as it cooled and soothed washing the remains of my day down the drain. I lathered up my hair with combination shampoo and rinsed out the remaining sawdust from my hair. Suddenly my cell phone began vibrating and a warning tone echoed through out my bathroom. I quickly checked the message discovering that a severe thunder storm was approaching. My shower was fixing to be cut short. Well technically I was almost finished showering anyway. I soaped up my loofah and scrubbed my skin until it squeaked. Between turning off the shower and grabbing my towel the apartment began to shake, and the enormous boom of thunder made my heart almost fly out of my chest.
I still hadn't felt relaxed enough to eat dinner yet, so I decided to check my f*******:. I sat down in the office chair by my desk still wrapped in my towel allowing the cool air to envelope my body. I opened up the home page for f*******: as lightning flashed outside my window. All of a sudden I heard a sizzling noise and the room became lit up with a light so white that I couldn't see anything. My brain was vibrating, and my arms and legs couldn't stop shaking. I must have been struck by lightning! This was it... I was going to die without a decent life for myself with no husband or kids. I was going to be found burnt to a crisp in nothing but a towel, or worse... Naked! My mother had always warned me about using electronics during a storm and especially about sitting near a window during a storm.
Slowly my eye sight began to return and my body stopped shaking. At first I saw a wall of white around me with a bit of blue sky above me. "So this is heaven," I thought to myself. I was still wrapped up in my fluffy sea green towel. I was about to meet St. Peter in my bath towel. Well this was definitely going to be embarrassing! I heard a ding. My eye sight had fully been restored and I could see clearly. I was surrounded by random photos as if they were displayed in a museum. The wall was full of words mixed in between the photos. I began to spot the names of my friends on the wall. Suddenly it hit me, I was staring at a gigantic f*******: page! It was mine. My name was at the top of the page. I noticed a small swirling hole off to my right.
Curiosity got the best of me and I walked over to it. I felt a strong vortex sucking and pulling at me. My auburn hair was flying about and I was desperately clutching my towel around my body. I felt myself stumble and down I went falling through static and swirling about. I finally landed on a patch of grass still clinging to my towel. I looked around and discovered that I appeared to be in some kind of a park. I saw swings ahead of me and slides. To the left of them was a weathered bench. Slowly standing up and still in shock, I made my way over to the bench and sat down, still not quite sure what was happening to me.
I heard voices behind me. I turned and saw a group of people moving closer to me as I sat there in my towel, half naked and afraid. "Hi, we saw you fall in to the web page." a female voice said. "Are you OK?" asked another female voice. "Look at her, she's only wearing a towel," the first female voice said to the guy standing beside her. "Do you know where you are?" she turned to me and asked as she slowly stepped forward. "No, I haven't got a clue," I replied. "This is the internet sweetie, you've been sucked in to a website," she informed me. "What, how, why?" was all I could manage to ask. "Was there by any chance a thunder storm, or did you spill a drink next to a computer, tablet, or cell phone?" she asked me with a concerned look on her face. "Yes there was a severe thunder storm," I answered the question as a sense of dread began to fill me. "Welcome to the internet, we're trapped inside it after we were sucked in to it," she informed me as she sat down and put her arm around me. "Just great," I thought to myself as I realized I was stuck somewhere inside the internet wearing nothing but a towel.
