CHAPTER 3Matt kept walking, resisting the temptation to look over his shoulder. It must seem as if that area back there meant nothing to him. He walked another hundred yards along the edge of the gorge until he was covered by a slide of broken shale. Then he crawled up through rocks and risked a look. Kurt was following. Matt grinned. He crawled out of the rocks and kept on walking. He took an easy path and held his pace down, so that Kurt could keep him in view. If he lost Kurt too quickly, Kurt might wander back toward the ledge and discover the drop. Matt kept himself in sight, moving ahead of Kurt like a decoy.
