CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO It certainly lacked ornamentation of any kind, but the sight of the chest brought a huge smile to Jeffrey’s face. It was beyond enticing, almost as if it called out to him. In the torchlight, the chest seemed to be made of oak with a lock and other fittings made of brass. He just couldn’t stop himself. Without checking the lock for traps, Jeffrey lifted the lid where upon he saw nothing but an empty box. His heart sank. His despair was short lived as teeth emerged from the rim of the lid and a gelatinous arm reached out from the chest’s side, slapping the thief across the face. He dropped instantly to the ground, his cheek burning from where the arm had struck him. His torch dropped on to the floor, from where its light provided a terrifying shadow for the chest creatur
