Fixing an Unbroken Heart

Alexa Lee was excited when she received a message that she was up for an interview at her dream company, NKMT Co. She breathes in deep as she stares up at the large building in-front of her. "I'm one step closer to my dreams." She whispers herself and excitedly, although honestly nervous, as she enters the building. "I have an interview with Mr. Mark Lee." She tells the front desk and shows the text message that she received. The woman at the reception smiles at her and instructs her to where the elevators are and to go to the 27th floor. She thanks the woman and proceeds as instructed. Alexa checks herself in the mirror inside the elevator, thankful that there were no other people inside until she reaches the 27th floor. "The first door to your left" she recalls the woman from the reception telling her. She knocks gently then opens the door to see an office with at least 6 cubicles, each one of them busy. She was hoping she could be one of them, too. "Hi, can I help you?" an elderly man, who looked like he was in his 50s, approaches her with a friendly smile. She smiles back, "Hi, I have an interview with Mr. Mark Lee?" she says and the man directs her to the office at the end of the room. She thanks the elderly office worker and goes to the office of her interviewer. She knocks on the door gently, as well, and enters when she hears someone to tell her to come in. "Good morning, Mr. Ma-" she steps mid-sentence, her smile disappearing from her face when she sees the man inside was the same person who made her leave Seoul, South Korea. The man who she swore she never wanted to see again. Alexa was about to make a move to step out when he spoke. "Are you here to see Mark?" he asks, Alexa clearing her throat out of habit and nods.  "Uh, well, yes. I have an interview with Mr. Lee." she replies, trying to sound stable as she can. "I can come back when he's available-"” "No, it's fine. Come in." the man says and sits up from where she assumes was supposedly Mr. Lee's chair. "He actually asked me to continue the interviews since he had something urgent to take care of." He sits on the edge of desk, crossing his legs on the floor and looking at Alexa with an amused smile. Alexa wanted to smack it off his face. "It's okay, Mr. Nakamoto, I can just come back when he's available." Alexa says, one hand on the door handle. "I honestly wouldn't recommend that, Ms. Lee. Today is the last interviews for this position, unless you're not that interested then by all means-"” "No!" Alexa suddenly finds herself exclaiming and suddenly covers her mouth when she sees, through the glass door, that a few heads turn her way even though the door was closed. "No." she repeats calmly, "I am very much interested in this position and I will go through with this interview." "That's the Alexa Lee I know." Mr. Nakamoto says smugly, reaching behind him to grab a copy of Alexa's resume.  "So, let's see." he glances at the papers on his hands, reading quietly until he reaches a part he was interested in. "You resigned from your last job just last month, in South Korea. May I know the reason why?" Alexa fights the urge to sigh and roll her eyes, she wants to be as professional as she can even though Eugene Nakamoto was getting on her nerves. "I'm afraid I can't answer that, Mr. Nakamoto. It's a private matter, but I assure you. My resignation has nothing to do with my job, I just had to urgently move somewhere else." was her vague explanation and Eugene just looked at her as if he was waiting for her to tell him more. When Eugene doesn't get anymore from Alexa, he proceeds to ask her another question. "Why should we hire you, Ms. Lee?" he asks. It was a typical question and Alexa knew Eugene wasn't interested in her answer, she can see it on his face but she still wanted to impress him even though she was sure she wasn't gonna get hired with him interviewing her. "I believe I am best suited for this job because of my experience and training. I have attached certifications from my trainings and recommendations from my previous bosses. I also believe that the language will be no problem for me since I am experienced in going to other countries for conferences and that I communicate well in English." she was sure the last part of her answer made no sense but she wasn't really worried since Eugene was now showing her how bored he was. "When can you start?" The question honestly caught her off-guard and suddenly blurted out "What?" Eugene gives her a semi-smirk before he turns serious again. "I don't want to have to repeat myself, Ms. Lee."” Alexa felt goosebumps all over her arms as she held tighter on her bag and said, "As soon as you need me, sir." She didn't want to address Eugene with any sort of formalities but she felt the need to since he was asking her when she could start. Then it dawned on her, what was Eugene doing in America? Why was Eugene interviewing her, here in her dream company out of all places? Eugene suddenly laughs but nods, turning serious again. "Alright, since today is a Wednesday, you can start on Monday so you will have ample time to prepare the documents needed for your employment. Make sure to pay the HR a visit after this interview." Alexa was sure Eugene was dismissing her but she couldn't shake the thought that he might just be playing with her. "Uhm, Mr. Nakamoto, I'm just curious." she begins, Eugene nods at her to continue, "I was supposed to be interviewed by a Mr. Mark Lee, but you're standing in for him and you're hiring me. Do you have the authority?" She couldn't help but ask, Eugene was known to lie most of the time and he likes playing pranks on other people, she didn't want to be a laughing stock for him. But he does, he laughs and shakes his head, wiping a tear from his eye. "Well, Ms. Alexa Lee, I am the owner of this company. I'm sure I have the authority to hire whomever." he raises a brow at her, "You didn't even research the background of the company before you applied? I'm pretty disappointed in you, Ms. Lee." he said, sounding sympathetic when he didn't look the slightest. Alexa almost hit her head on the wall. NKMT stands for Nakamoto. She sighs, even if she knew that, Nakamoto could be anyone's surname. And last she knew Eugene was back in Japan, how could she have known? "I actually did, I just-" she was at lost for words, Eugene was smiling at her and he wasn't even mocking. "It's fine." He just says and stands from the table, leading her to the door, "That was just a joke, relax. I'll walk you to the HR." Alexa was dumbfounded but just stands and follows Eugene out of the room, feeling small at how the people greeted and regarded him. This was always the case when he was with Eugene, she knew the Nakamotos were well off but she never imagined they were this rich, she never really knew the extent of their wealth since she wasn't really interested. She was just interested in knowing Eugene, but that wasn't the case for him. "Ms. Lee?" Alexa blinked to see Eugene was already in-front of her, face near his as he was waving a hand. "Are you still there?” Alexa gasps and jumps back, clearing her throat and composing herself. Eugene stands up straight, leaning back. "I said we're here." "Oh!" out of habit, and culture, she bows at Eugene, "Thank you so much, Mr. Nakamoto." she stands up straight to see him smiling at her, it was that smile that ruined her life. "I'll leave you, then. Good luck." Eugene waves at the HR people, who were all gawking at him, typical. Eugene Nakamoto was a very attractive man; he was tall, handsome and he liked changing his hair colour which added to his rich bad boy image. His nasal voice was soothing and it can hypnotise you if you listen long enough. His body was not buff but he was toned that he looked stylish whatever he wears.She shakes her head to wake herself up from her thoughts and just bows at him again and turns to face the staff who approached her. "Mama!" A  cute little boy runs towards Alexa the moment she opens the front door of her apartment. She couldn't help gushing as she gathers the little boy in her arms and pulls him in for a tight hug, pressing kisses all over his face. "Mama! Stop! I'm a big boy now!" Alexa's son, Gino, complains but doesn't really push his mother away despite his protests. "Yes, my four year old baby is now a big boy, of course." she chuckles as she presses one more kiss and lets him run inside the house just in time for her sister, Sunny, to walk out from the kitchen.  "You just arrived?" Sunny asks as she wipes her hands on her apron. "I didn't hear you come in." "What if it wasn't me who came in?"” Sunny rolls her eyes at her sister and goes back to the kitchen to finish what she was cooking. Alexa moved to the US with her sister when things got rough for them in Seoul. Their parents, although not really into the idea of them moving away specially with Gino, wasn't able to do anything since it was for their future. Sunny luckily had a job offer before they left Seoul and Alexa blindly came with her, hoping she'd find a job right away. It took her a month to actually find a job but for some reason, she couldn't stay in one for a long time; jumping from one job to another to taking two jobs and then resigning altogether. Working for NKMT Co. had been a dream for her ever since she was in Seoul since it was a very successful global company who supports their employees and helps them grow into successful entrepreneurs as well. She never knew Eugene was the owner of it even though they dated for a while, it was actually stupid of her to go out with someone she doesn't even know too well. But that was in the past. Now that she was finally in at the company, she can't contain her excitement but now that she knows Eugene owns the company, she was nervous. What if he plays tricks on her while she's in there? They didn't exactly end on good terms. Alexa walks over to the kitchen and leans by the counter. "Hey, guess what?" Sunny glances at her from what she was cooking, raising a brow at her sister. "You got rejected again?"” Alexa frowns and reaches to flick Sunny's forehead that had her whining, Alexa laughs. "On the contrary, I was hired on the spot!" The sisters squealed excitedly, hugging and jumping then Alexa remembered what she really intended to tell Sunny. "Although there's bad news." "What? Did you do something stupid again?" "I'm not really sure…" Alexa replies, honest. "The owner of the company is Eugene Nakamoto." Sunny gasps so exaggeratedly loud that Alexa was sure it was heard by the next apartment unit. "Seriously?" Alexa nods, sighing. "He was actually the one who interviewed me. I honestly wanted to leave but I really wanted to work there." "You didn't even know he owned that company? Alexa, you went out with him-"” "I know, I know. It's stupid. But to be fair, he didn't really like telling much about himself." "But still!" "That's the past, Sunny. This is the present." "Yes, Alexa Lee, Eugene Nakamoto was in the past; but he's in your present again. What will you do if he finds out about Gino?" Alexa's eyes widen at the realisation that there will be a possibility for Eugene to know about Gino. "He's not gonna find out." Alexa says although her voice was weak, she wasn't confident. "He doesn't have the right to find out." "You think he hasn't done a background check on you now that you've met again?" Sunny asks, turning back to her cooking. "And why would he do that? He doesn't seem very interested in me anymore so I doubt that." She replies, actually and honestly hoping that wasn't the case. She didn't want to imagine any possibility that Eugene might want to take Gino away from her if he ever finds out about her baby boy.
