Chapter One: The Woman Who Came Back from the Dead
The night Lyra Vale returned to Silver Moon territory, every wolf in the forest began to howl. Not in welcome. In fear. Five years ago, the pack had watched her fall into the Hollow Moon Abyss, a forbidden chasm from which no living creature had ever returned. They had called her cursed. They had called her weak. And when she disappeared into the darkness, they had celebrated the end of their greatest disgrace. Tonight, Lyra was coming back to collect what they owed her. Rain slid down the hood of her black coat as she stood before the enormous iron gates of Silver Moon Pack. Beyond them, the familiar territory glittered beneath the lights of the packhouse, where music drifted through open windows and expensive cars lined the driveway. A celebration. Of course. The three Alpha heirs were hosting their annual Moonrise Gala. The same three men who had once looked into her eyes and told her she was unworthy of standing beside them. Kael Draven. Darius Blackthorn. Ronan Veyne. Her three fated mates. The thought stirred something deep inside her, but Lyra buried it before it could take shape. Five years ago, she would have given anything to hear one of them call her theirs. Tonight, she would rather watch the entire pack burn than beg any of them for another glance. A small hand slipped into hers. “Mama?” Lyra looked down. Her son stood beside her, wrapped in a dark blue coat, his little face tilted toward the glowing gates. His eyes were unusually bright beneath the rain-darkened curls falling across his forehead. “Are we going inside?” he asked. “Soon, sweetheart.” “Will they be nice to us?” The question struck harder than it should have. Lyra crouched in front of him and brushed a damp curl away from his face. “We don't need anyone to be nice to us,” she said softly. “We only need the truth.” He considered that, then nodded. “Can I have cake if they have cake?” Despite everything, a small smile touched her lips. “If they have cake, you can have two pieces.” His face brightened. For one brief moment, the past loosened its grip on her heart. Then the gates opened. A guard stepped out, his hand resting on the weapon at his waist. He looked Lyra over with open suspicion. “Name and business.” “Lyra Vale.” His expression changed. He stared at her face, then at the violet eyes that had haunted pack rumors for years. “That’s impossible.” “People say that a lot.” “You’re dead.” Lyra rose slowly. “Then you have nothing to fear from me.” The guard took an involuntary step backward. She walked past him before he could find another excuse to stop her. The path to the packhouse had not changed. The silver-leaf trees still lined the road, and the fountain at the entrance still bore the carved image of a wolf with its head thrown back toward the moon. But the people had changed. Or perhaps Lyra had simply learned to see them clearly. Pack members gathered beneath the covered entrance, dressed in silk, velvet, and polished jewelry. Their laughter faded as she approached. Conversations stopped. One woman dropped her champagne glass. A whisper traveled through the crowd. “Lyra Vale?” “No. She fell into the Abyss.” “I saw her myself. There was no way she survived.” “Then who is that child?” Lyra heard every word. Her wolf heard more. For five years, she had believed she had no wolf at all. She had been mocked for it, punished for it, and rejected because of it. But the Hollow Moon Abyss had changed something inside her. Whatever slept beneath its black waters had not killed her. It had awakened. And now, whenever someone looked at her with hatred, something ancient stirred beneath her skin. The packhouse doors swung open. A man stepped onto the balcony above the entrance, dressed in a black suit that made his broad shoulders seem even more imposing. Kael Draven. The first of the three heirs. His gaze swept across the crowd until it landed on Lyra. For several seconds, he did not move. Then the champagne glass in his hand slipped from his fingers and shattered on the stone floor. “Lyra?” The entire entrance fell silent. Behind him appeared Darius Blackthorn, his expression hardening the instant he recognized her. Ronan Veyne followed, and the color drained from his face. Three men. Three powerful Alpha heirs. Three men who had stood beside her when she was condemned and done nothing to save her. Kael descended the steps first. “You’re alive.” Lyra glanced at the broken glass near his shoes. “Your powers of observation have improved.” His jaw tightened. “Where have you been?” “Somewhere you couldn't reach me.” “Lyra, this isn't funny.” “I'm not laughing.” His eyes dropped to the little boy holding her hand. Something in his expression shifted. “Who is that?” Lyra moved half a step, placing herself between Kael and her son. “My child.” Darius reached the bottom of the stairs. His gaze moved from Lyra's face to the boy's, lingering on the unusual brightness of the child's eyes. “Your child?” he repeated. “Yes. I recommend listening carefully. I don't intend to repeat myself.” Ronan stared at her as if the woman standing before him had stepped out of a nightmare. “We searched for you,” he said. Lyra turned toward him. “No. You searched the forest after the elders ordered you to. You stopped when they told you I was dead.” Ronan flinched. Darius's face darkened. “We were told the Abyss had claimed you.” “And you believed it because believing it was easier than wondering whether I had survived.” None of them answered. For a moment, Lyra saw the boys they had once been—the boys who had followed her through the forest before their families taught them that a powerless girl was an embarrassment. Then the memory vanished. Those boys had disappeared long before she fell into the Abyss. Kael took another step toward her. “Whatever happened between us, we can discuss it privately.” “No.” His eyes flashed. “You can't simply return after five years and expect everyone to accept this.” “I don't need acceptance.” “Then why are you here?” Lyra looked beyond him, toward the grand doors of the packhouse. “I'm looking for answers.” “About what?” “About the people who wanted me dead.” Silence swallowed the entrance. Before any of them could respond, a deep, metallic sound rolled through the ground. The fountain trembled. Every wolf in the courtyard froze. A second sound followed—like an enormous heartbeat rising from beneath the earth. Lyra's son tightened his grip on her hand. “Mama, I hear it.” “So do I.” The silver wolf carved into the fountain began to glow. A thin line of violet light spread across its stone body, tracing the ancient symbols engraved around its base. One by one, the symbols awakened, shining brighter until the entire courtyard was bathed in a strange purple radiance. Someone screamed. The pack's oldest elder pushed through the crowd, his face ashen. “No,” he whispered. “It cannot be.” His gaze locked onto Lyra. Then, slowly, he lowered himself to one knee. “The White Wolf bloodline…” The words died in his throat. Every conversation ceased. Even the wind seemed to stop. Lyra stared at the elder, her pulse hammering. “What did you just call me?” He did not answer. Instead, he bowed his head lower. “My lady.” Behind him, the other elders began to kneel. Then the guards. Then the members of the pack, one by one, as if an invisible force had pressed them toward the ground. Only Kael, Darius, and Ronan remained standing. Their faces had lost every trace of certainty. Lyra looked at the glowing fountain, then at her son. His eyes shone with the same violet light as hers. And somewhere far beyond the pack's borders, a second heartbeat answered the first. In a penthouse overlooking the city, Damian Voss abruptly lifted his head from the contract he was reading. The room was silent except for the rain against the windows. Then a black velvet box on his desk began to shake. Inside it lay an ancient silver relic his family had guarded for generations—a relic no one had ever managed to awaken. Until now. A thin line of violet light appeared across its surface. Damian stared at it. His phone rang. His security chief spoke before Damian could say a word. “Sir, we have a situation. Something has happened at Silver Moon territory.” Damian's gaze remained fixed on the relic. “What kind of situation?” “We don't know yet. But every monitoring system we have is registering the same energy signature.” “Whose?” A pause. Then the answer came. “Lyra Vale.” Damian went completely still. He had never met the woman. He had never spoken her name. Yet the moment he heard it, a strange certainty settled over him—one he could neither explain nor ignore. The relic cracked. For the first time in a hundred years, its ancient seal began to break. And in Silver Moon territory, Lyra Vale finally understood one thing. Her return had not merely disturbed the past. It had awakened something the world had spent centuries trying to bury. Something that knew her name. Something that had been waiting for her. And it was only the beginning.
