"Someone's coming," Kendra whispered in my ear. I squeezed my eyes shut. My heart was beating so hard, I imagined I could feel it in the pavement underneath me. "It's a van," Kendra whispered. Wincing, I braced myself for impact. "It's not white! Go!" Ryan yelled. I didn't need the earpiece to hear his shout. I leaped off the road and flung myself behind the mailbox with Kendra and Ryan as the van passed us. It didn't slow. As we watched the tail lights disappear down the road, our collective exhale released into the cool night air. Once again, I stepped out from behind the mailbox into the open lane and lay down. New craters formed in my skin from the rocks on the road. "Headlights," Kendra warned in my ear. I kept my eyes open this time with my ear pressed to the pavement. "
