Laura woke to soft light filtering through the curtains and the faint aroma of coffee drifting through the room. For a moment, She didn't remember where she was - the softness of the couch beneath her, the faint hum of city noise. Then her eyes found the jacket over her shoulders...his jacket. Memories of the night before come rushing back - her confession, his calm voice, the way his hand trembled slightly before he kissed her. She sat up slowly, touching her lips without meaning to. They still felt warm, like the echo of something she wasn't ready to name. The apartment was quiet, but she could hear faint movement in the kitchen. When she walked in, he was dressed - Blackshirt, sleeves rolled, hair slightly messy from lack of sleep. He looked dangerous even when he was making coffee. Good morning, she said softly. He turned, a small flicker of relief crossing his face . you slept. '' Barely, '' she admitted. But it's the first time i didn't dream of running. That made him pause. He looked at her longer than necessary, as if weighing whether to say something or not. Then, quietly , You don't have to run anymore, Laura. She smiled faintly. You keep saying that like its a promise. It is,'' he said, his tone low and final. She took the cup he handed her, fingers brushing his for just a second - enough to stir the tension that never could pretend away. He leaned against the counter, watching her. i have to go handle something today. She knew what that meant. His tone was calm, but underneath it was familiar current - controlled fury. It's about them, isn't it? His jaw flexed. They wont touch you again. '' Don't, '' she whispered. Don't go because of me. He stepped closer, eyes narrowing. You really think i could sit here knowing what they did? That they're still out there, breathing , like it never happened? Her heart pounded. I.....I just don't want to be a reason you get hurt. He gave a small, humorless laugh. Too late for that. The silence stretched again - heavy, intimate. Then, softer, he reached out, brushing his thumb over her cheek. stay here. I'll be back before dark. She nodded, though every part of her wanted to ask him to stay. As he walked to the door, she whispered, be careful. He paused, just for heartbeat - then turned his head slightly, a faint smile ghosting his lips. Always am. The door closed behind him. She stood there in the quiet, the taste of coffee and his kiss both lingering - and for the first time, she realised she wasn't afraid of the silence anymore. Ray's Pov He left the apartment with her scent still on his jacket and the ghost of her lips burning on his. Bad timing, he thought, he shouldn't have kissed her. And yet, if she asked him to undo it, he wouldn't be able to. Not anymore. The morning air was cold, but it did nothing to cool the heat simmering in his chest. He wasn't angry - anger was too loud, too messy. This was colder. focused. surgical. They touched her. They scared her. And last night , when she whispered his fears into his hands, something inside him shifted - snapped cleanly into place. He got into car, and Leo slid into the passenger seat without a word, already sensing the storm and his men scary than last night. Names? he asked. Leo handed him a small folder. two of them. One's still in the city. Then he's the first. The drive was quiet. He didn't need music, didn't need distractions. his mind replayed Laura curled on his couch, trying to hide the tremble in her voice as she spoke about the men who followed her. she thought he kissed her to comfort her. He didn't. He kissed her because he finally allowed himself the thing he'd been denying for weeks....the pull she had on him.....The softness. The way she looked terrified and brave at the same time. And because if he didn't kiss her then, he would've done something far darker to the men who hurt her. Leo,s voice pulled him from his thoughts. He's inside, he said, nodding toward a run -down building on the edge of downtown. He got out of the car calmly, buttoning his cuffs like he was heading into a board meeting. But inside, the man walking toward that building wasn't a CEO. He was the part of him laura had never seen: the shadow he kept buried. Leo held the door open. '' Boss. '' Stay here, he ordered, voice quiet but final. The hallway smelled of old cigarettes and fear. His steps were measured. silent. He found the man easily......hunched at the table, counting money, oblivious. The moment the man looked up and recognized him, the blood drained from his face. '' You , '' he choked. '' Boss, listen .... i didn't know she was yours. Ray didn't respond. He simply closed the door behind him. One clean lock. One step forward. You followed her, he said softly. cornered her. It was a misunderstanding -'' You put your hands on her. N ..no, I.....He grabbed the man by the collar and slammed him against the wall with a force that knocked the breath from his lungs. She was shaking, he said, voice low, almost gentle - the kind of gentle that was more frightening than shouting. She couldn't sleep. And last night....... she cried in my arms. The man's eyes widened. Please...... You're going to apologise. '' For what? '' he gasped. For breathing the same air as her. Then everything went quiet. controlled. precise. He didn't drag it out - he wasn't cruel for pleasure. He was cruel for justice. When he stepped back outside, the morning sun had risen fully. He took a steady breath, rolling his cuffs back down. Leo glanced at him. Done? He nodded. '' One left. '' And after that? He didn't answer. Because his thoughts were already drifting back to laura .......her small smile, her soft '' be careful, '' Her sitting alone in his apartment wrapped in his jacket. He wanted to go back to her. More than he should. More than he'd ever admit out loud. After that, he finally said, l,m going home.
