Chapter nine: Confession and Trust

For a long moment, she didn't move. His arms around her were strong, grounding, a wall between her and everything outside that door. She felt the rapid thud of his heart against her cheek - not calm, not collected like usual but fierce and alive. Then his voice broke the silence, low and controlled. '' Tell me what they did. '' Her fingers tightened around his shirt , you don't want to know. '' Yes , i do, '' he said, leaning back just enough to look at her. if they re coming for you, I need to know what kind of ghosts I'm fighting. She swallowed hard. Her throat burned as if all the words she had kept locked inside were trying to climb out at once. I came here because they told me i had a job, she began softly. A waitress job. Good pay, decent hours. I was desperate my mother was sick, and i needed money fast. His jaw tensed, but he said nothing. The first week was fine . they gave me a place to stay, told me to be patient until my papers were ready. Then one night, they took me to the club. Not this one , another ,smaller, darker. They said the waitress positions were filled , but there was still work if i wanted to stay. Her voice cracked, they made me dance. I didn't know how, but they trained us like......like property. They took our IDs, our passports. We couldn't leave. if anyone tired, they'd send people after us. She looked up at him, eyes glistening. Leo helped me escape. That why he was here tonight......He was trying to warn me. His eyes darkened , a storm gathering behind the calm. ...And those men , the ones who owned the club? Still running it, still taking girls. He stepped back slightly, his hand still at her waist, the other curling into a fist. They think they can come into my city and touch what's mine? Her breath hitched. You cant....... I will, he interrupted, his tone deadly quiet. No one lays a hand on you a gain. No one even says your name without my permission. Something in her chest twisted. The way he said it, not possessive, but protective as if her pain had become his war. Tears spilled over a gain. She tired to hid her face, but he caught her chin gently, lifting it. '' Hey, '' he murmured, softer now. You survived that. You got out and that takes strength, Laura, don't you ever think you're weak. Her lips trembled. I just don't want to go back there... ever. '' You wont , he promised. '' Not while I'm breathing. Their eyes met - silence stretching , heavy and electric. His thumb brushed a ways her tears, slow and careful, as if he was afraid she'd break if he touched her too roughly. Do you trust me ? he asked quietly. '' I do, '' she whispered. '' More than i should. He gave a faint, almost broken smile. '' Good, because I'm about to make this right.. And for the first time , she believed him. The silence after her confession stretched, filled only by the faint hum of the city outside and their unsteady breathing . The air between them had changed heavier, but softer somehow. He still hadn't let go of her hand. His thumb moved slowly, tracing the back of her palm as if memorizing it, you.......You must've been terrified, he murmured. I was , she admitted. Every night felt like it could be my last. But somehow....... I kept thinking I'd find a way out. You did. His voice was firm , not praise, but certainty. you made it out because you don't give up. She looked up, eyes shimmering in the dim light .I had to , and now I'm here with you. But i don't even know if that"s safer. He exhaled softly, a faint smirk touching his lips. probably not. but at least now, the danger's on my side. That made her laugh, weak but real. it was the first sound of warmth in hours, he smiled at the sound, as if it was something rare he didn't want to lose. She leaned back slightly on the couch, exhaustion catching up to her. He noticed, and without a word, took off his jacket and placed it over her shoulders. it smelled faintly of cedar and smoke and something that made her chest ache. Stay here tonight, he said quietly. you're safe. she hesitated. I.....I shouldn't. You should rest. His gaze softened. just this once , let someone else watch over you. something inside her gave way - the part of her that had been fighting to stay strong for too long. She nodded, eyes heavy. He sat beside her, silent, but close enough that his warmth bled into her. For a while , neither spoke. Then, just as her eyes began to close, she whispered, '' why do you care so much? '' He turned toward her, studying her face -the bruised courage in her expression, the fragility she tired to hide. Because the moment i saw you, i knew what you were trying to do - survive, and i cant stand watching someone fight a lone. She blinked, the world blurring slightly. That's dangerous, you know. I know, he said , leaning in. '' So am I. '' His hand brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear - slow, deliberate. Her breath caught. the world seemed to still. And then, before either could stop it, he kissed her. It wasn't rough or hungry - it was the opposite. careful, hesitant, like a promise. Her fingers curled in his shirt, pulling him closer. For a heartbeat, there was no fear, no past, only warmth, and the unspoken truth neither had dare say a loud. When they finally pulled apart, her eyes were wide, her lips trembling slightly. I shouldn't have .....he began his voice low. Don't, she whispered. Don't apologise. He studied her for a long moment, then nodded slowly, as if understanding something deep and irreversible. Get some sleep, Laura. We'll figure everything out in the morning.
