Chapter4

I stared at Ellie, her smug smile igniting a fire within me. She had crossed a line, and while Jake had betrayed me, I wasn’t about to let her manipulate me into being her collateral damage. “You really thought this would scare me?” I said, my voice cold. “Whatever game you’re playing, Ellie, I’m not a part of it.” Ellie tilted her head, feigning innocence. “Oh, Lara, this isn’t about you. It’s about Jake and the choices he made. If you get caught in the crossfire, well, that’s unfortunate.” Jake slammed his fist on the table, his jaw clenched. “Ellie, stop this. Whatever you want, we can talk about it. But dragging Lara into this? That’s low, even for you.” Ellie’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “Oh, Jake. Still trying to play the hero? You can’t talk your way out of this.” Before I could respond, my phone buzzed in my bag. I glanced at the screen to see a notification from my attorney. I excused myself and stepped outside, leaving Jake to deal with Ellie. “Ms. Anderson,” my attorney’s voice came through the line. “We’ve just received an anonymous tip. It seems Ellie may be fabricating her pregnancy claims.” I felt a glimmer of hope. “Are you sure?” “We’re working on verifying the information, but there’s a history of similar claims against other men. She seems to target high-profile individuals.” I clenched my jaw, the pieces of Ellie’s game falling into place. She wasn’t just a mistress she was a con artist. Ellie’s words were a punch to the gut, but the glint in her eyes told me she wasn’t here for closure. She was here for chaos. “What do you want, Ellie?” I asked, my voice low. She leaned closer, her tone dripping with mock sweetness. “Oh, Jake, I want what’s fair. A piece of the pie. You wouldn’t want this little scandal to ruin your precious empire, would you?” I stared at her, disbelief and rage coursing through me. “You’re blackmailing me?” Ellie shrugged. “Call it what you want. But I think you know the stakes.” Before I could respond, Lara walked back in, her expression unreadable. She stood tall, her presence commanding the room. “Ellie,” she began, her tone firm. “You’ve overstayed your welcome. Leave now, or I’ll make sure you regret it.” Ellie raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “And what exactly are you going to do, Lara? Run crying to your lawyers?” Lara took a step closer, her gaze icy. “I don’t need to cry to anyone. But you should know something your lies are falling apart. My lawyers are already digging into your past. It’s only a matter of time before your schemes come to light.” Ellie’s smirk faltered, and for the first time, I saw a flicker of doubt in her eyes. “You don’t scare me,” she snapped, though her voice lacked the confidence it held earlier. “Good,” Lara said coolly. “Because when the truth comes out, I’ll make sure you face the consequences of everything you’ve done.” Ellie hesitated for a moment, then stormed out, her heels clicking angrily against the floor. As Ellie disappeared, I turned to Jake, my anger still simmering. “Don’t think for a second that this changes anything between us,” I said, my voice sharp. Jake nodded, his expression somber. “I know. But thank you for standing up to her.” I scoffed. “I didn’t do it for you, Jake. I did it because I refuse to let someone like Ellie destroy what I’ve built.” He reached out as if to touch my arm, but I stepped back, shaking my head. “You need to get your life together, Jake. I won’t be here to pick up the pieces anymore.” With that, I turned and walked away, my heart heavy but my resolve stronger than ever. Watching Lara leave felt like losing her all over again, but this time, I knew I couldn’t blame anyone but myself. Ellie’s threats loomed over me, but they paled in comparison to the realization that I’d destroyed the best thing in my life. I had to fix this not just for Lara, but for myself. The days that followed were a whirlwind of emotions. I threw myself into work, avoiding Jake’s calls and texts. The divorce proceedings were moving forward, and I felt a sense of liberation. But there was a weight on my chest that wouldn’t lift, an ache that reminded me of all the years I had given to a man who didn’t value me. My attorney called with updates on Ellie’s background. As suspected, she had a history of targeting wealthy men. Pregnancy claims, false accusations, and even blackmail it was all part of her pattern. Knowing this should’ve made me feel victorious, but instead, it left me hollow. “Ms. Anderson,” my attorney said, his tone hesitant. “There’s something else. Ellie’s latest claims involve... Jake’s business assets. She’s threatening to go public unless he settles with her.” I clenched my fists. Jake’s empire wasn’t just his it had been built on both our efforts. I couldn’t let Ellie tear it apart, even if I was done with him. “Handle it,” I said curtly, ending the call. But as the days passed, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I needed closure not just from Jake, but from everything that had been weighing me down. Ellie’s threats were growing bolder. She’d sent me an email outlining her demands a hefty payout and a promise to keep her quiet. But the legal team was onto her. What I wasn’t prepared for was the silence from Lara. She had always been fiery, quick to challenge me, but now? Now, she was a fortress, impenetrable and distant. One evening, I sat in the empty living room of the suite where everything had unraveled. The memories haunted me Lara’s expression of betrayal, the cold finality in her voice. I had lost her, and it was my fault. A knock at the door jolted me from my thoughts. “Come in,” I said, expecting one of the hotel staff. Instead, Lara stepped in, her presence commanding as ever. She was dressed in a sleek black suit, her hair tied back in a way that emphasized her sharp cheekbones. “Lara,” I began, but she held up a hand. “I’m not here to reconcile, Jake,” she said. “I’m here to ensure Ellie doesn’t destroy everything we built.” I nodded, swallowing my pride. “I understand. Thank you for coming.” Lara placed a folder on the table. “Here’s what you need to know about Ellie’s past. Use it to protect yourself and this company.” I opened the folder and scanned the documents. It was a thorough investigation, detailing Ellie’s manipulations. “Why are you helping me?” I asked, meeting her eyes. Lara’s expression softened, but only slightly. “Because despite everything, I’m not vindictive. And because I worked too hard to let someone like Ellie destroy it all.” Her words stung, a reminder of how much I had taken for granted. “I’ll fix this,” I promised. “And I’ll fix myself.” Lara raised an eyebrow. “Fixing yourself isn’t about me, Jake. Do it for yourself. I’ve moved on.” The finality in her voice was a blow, but I knew she was right. Walking away from Jake that night felt like the final chapter of a book I had been too afraid to close. But as I left the suite, I felt the weight begin to lift. For the first time in years, I wasn’t carrying the burden of someone else’s mistakes. I was free. Or so I thought. Because as I got into my car, my phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number. Unknown: You think you’ve won, don’t you? This isn’t over. My heart raced. Ellie. I glanced around the parking lot, the eerie feeling of being watched creeping up my spine. This wasn’t over not by a long shot. The text haunted me for hours. I stared at the screen, rereading the words until the letters blurred. Ellie wasn’t just manipulative she was dangerous. I’d seen it in her eyes when she clung to Jake that day, the kind of cunning that wasn’t easily deterred. I couldn’t let her intimidate me. I’d fought too hard to reclaim my life. The next morning, I decided to meet with my attorney. We went over everything: restraining orders, security measures, and ensuring my personal assets were protected. “You’re doing the right thing,” my attorney assured me. “Ellie thrives on fear. Don’t give her any.” But fear wasn’t my only concern. That text made me realize Ellie wasn’t acting alone. She had resources, connections, and perhaps even someone feeding her information. Jake? The thought made my stomach churn. Despite everything, I didn’t want to believe he would stoop so low. But if not him, then who? I resolved to find out. Ellie’s threats were escalating. My team had discovered she wasn’t just targeting me she was digging into Lara’s life, too. That was my breaking point. I’d made mistakes, but dragging Lara into this was unforgivable. I confronted Ellie in the suite she had temporarily taken over in the same hotel. “What the hell are you doing, Ellie?” I demanded, slamming the door behind me. She lounged on the couch, wearing a smug expression. “You’ve finally decided to grace me with your presence.” “Cut the games,” I snapped. “You’re threatening Lara now? This ends here.” Ellie stood, her smile widening. “Or what, Jake? You’ll stop me? You couldn’t even stop yourself from ruining your marriage.” Her words hit their mark, but I pushed the guilt aside. “I have proof of your scams, Ellie. If you don’t back off, I’ll make sure you pay for everything.” Ellie’s smirk faltered for a moment before she regained her composure. “You wouldn’t dare.” “Try me,” I said, my voice firm. She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. “You think Lara’s safe now? You think she’s untouchable? Let me remind you, Jake, I don’t lose.” I clenched my fists, the urge to retaliate bubbling under the surface. But I couldn’t let her bait me. “You’ve underestimated Lara,” I said. “She’s stronger than you’ll ever be.” As I turned to leave, Ellie’s voice stopped me. “Oh, and Jake,” she called out, a sinister edge to her tone. “Congratulations. You’re going to be a father.” I froze, my mind racing. I turned back to see her holding up a sonogram image, her expression triumphant. “You’re lying,” I said, though my voice wavered. “Am I?” Ellie countered, her grin returning. “Better start preparing, Daddy.” Two days later, I was in my office reviewing contracts when Jake barged in unannounced. His disheveled appearance and frantic eyes were enough to tell me something was wrong. “Jake, what are you doing here?” I asked, standing from my desk. He closed the door behind him, running a hand through his hair. “We need to talk.” I crossed my arms. “About what?” “Ellie,” he said, his voice strained. “She’s claiming she’s pregnant. With my child.” The words hit me like a punch to the gut, but I refused to show it. “And you believe her?” I asked, keeping my tone even. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “But if she’s lying, I need to prove it. If she’s telling the truth...” “Then you’ll have to deal with it,” I finished for him. Jake stepped closer, his desperation palpable. “Lara, I know I don’t deserve your help, but Ellie is targeting you too. She sent you that text, didn’t she?” I hesitated before nodding. “I’ll handle it,” I said firmly. Jake’s shoulders slumped. “You shouldn’t have to handle this alone.” “Jake, I’ve been handling things alone for years,” I replied. “This is no different.” He flinched, the weight of my words settling on him. As he turned to leave, I added, “If Ellie is lying, expose her. If she’s not, then be the father your child deserves. Either way, I’m done being dragged into your mess.” Jake paused at the door, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’m sorry, Lara. For everything.” I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. Watching Jake and Lara from the shadows was almost too easy. They thought they could outsmart me, but they didn’t realize how far I was willing to go. The pregnancy? Real or fake, it didn’t matter. What mattered was control and I had it. For now. But soon, they’d both see that crossing me was the biggest mistake of their lives. And I wasn’t done yet.
