Chapter Thirteen

Clary's POV I walked to the Lightwood's and rang their doorbell. Not long after, the door opened and Jace smirked down at me. "Miss me already, Red?" "Yeah, right. I'm here for Izzy and Magnus. Can you get them?" "You want to come in?" "Nope. I'm good right here." "Okay then." He closed the door and walked inside, but I did hear him yelling for Izzy and Magnus. The door opened once again and the two of them stood there. "Whatcha need, biscuit?" "Help. I need a dress for prom." They immediately lit up. "What?! Who asked you?!" Way too excited, Iz. They closed the door and sat with me on the steps. "Your brother asked me, actually." At her confused expression, I said, "Jace. He asked me to go with him." "OMG! When did this happen? What'd he say?" "He was looking through my cd's and he got all nervous, so I asked him what was up and he asked me if I wanted to go to prom with him." I laughed. "I told him to ask me again with more confidence, so he did and I said yes. Now, I'm here to ask you for help in finding a dress. With my dad's credit card." Izzy squealed and Magnus hugged me. "We will find you the best dress ever! We leave tomorrow at ten, be ready." "Okay. You guys want to come over for dinner tonight? All of you?" "Sure. I'll tell mom." "Be over by eight." "'Kay." I stood and made it back to the house, heading straight for the kitchen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Ooh, something smells good." Jon walked in and tried to dip his finger in the sauce, but I smacked his hand with a wooden spoon. "Ow! You're so mean." He backed away from the stove. "Never said that I was nice." I stirred the pot and turned the stove off, moving the pot over the sink and dumping the noodles into the strainer. I shook all of the water off the noodles and turned around, seeing Jon by the stove licking something off of his fingers. "Daddy! Get him out of my kitchen!" I yelled and prepared the spaghetti as dad forced Jon out of the kitchen. I moved onto the salad and took that out to the table. "You're not joining us?" Maryse asked as I started to leave the room. "I have to finish the actual dinner. Shouldn't be long." I headed back to the kitchen and made everyone's plates, putting on the finishing touches, which took about twenty more minutes. Dad and Jon came in and helped me carry everyone's plates out, along with the rolls I made and the cookies, but I let the casserole stay in the oven since it wasn't done yet. "Okay, casserole is still in the oven, but it's gonna need another ten minutes or so, so dig in." I sat down in my spot. Jace to my left, dad to my right and Jon across from me. "This spaghetti is amazing, Clary." I smiled at Maryse. "Thanks. I worked pretty hard on it. Jon here couldn't keep his damn hands away from the food when I was making it." "Yeah, and I got smacked with a spoon for it." He held up his hand, showing off the red mark in the shape of a spoon. "Shoulda stayed outta the kitchen." Magnus mumbled and I laughed. "You do not mess with a woman and her kitchen." Maryse stated and I agreed. "So, Jace, have you asked anyone to prom?" Robert asked and Jace nodded. "Who's the lucky girl?" "Well, actually, Clary is." Jon choked on his spaghetti and dad hit his back a few times. "Huh?" Maryse was so confused. "I asked Clary to go with me and she said, 'Yes'. So, I am taking her to prom." Maryse licked her lips before smiling at me. "And, you've decided that you want to date now?" I shrugged. "Maybe. I don't know yet." "Well, either way, I'm glad. Have you bought a dress yet?" "No, Izzy and Magnus are going with me tomorrow." "I can do your hair, if you'd like." "Sure. I'd love that." Soon, I brought out the casserole and everyone was getting seconds. Jace's POV (Short, Sorry!) After we all finished dinner, we moved to the living room, talking about things. "Jace, come here for a minute." I stood up and followed mom into the dining room. "Why are we in here?" I asked. "I want to talk to you about Clary." I nodded. "Look, you are my son and I love you, but I also know that you're a player. You only go out with girls for sex." "That's not what I want with Clary." "What do you want with her?" "I-I don't know. I just know that I like her. Why are we even talking about this?" "I have known Clary since she was three and I love her like my own daughter, so if you screw things up with her, it will hurt the whole family. We love her, she's family, so don't screw this up, or leave her be." "What I don't understand, is how everyone seems to be her protectors. Does she need to be protected? I don't get it." "You don't get it, because you didn't know her when she was little. She is an amazing girl and I just don't want you to break her heart." "I won't." "I hope you really mean that." She sighed. "Go back in there." I did as I was told and returned to my seat beside Alec. "So, Clary, when are you planning to go back to school?" Dad asked. "Next semester, I hope. As long as I get the 'okay' from my doctor." "And, your head is healing right?" He asked. "Should be, but I have a doctor's appointment the day after tomorrow to make sure." "Were you in an accident, or something?" I asked and she picked at her nails. "Or something." Great. Another elusive answer to another one of my questions. Jonathan wrapped his arm around her and she leaned into his side. "It's okay." He whispered to her and kissed her head. I so don't understand this family. Or her. Should I even want her? I mean, I do want her, but can I really, truly have her if she's not willing to tell me her secrets? But, at the same time, I'm not making any effort to spill my secrets either. So, how can I be mad at her for not telling me things, when I'm not telling her things like that. She's so frustrating.
