Chapter One: The Breaking Point
Amelia Sam stood in front of the mirror, smoothing down the soft satin of her gown she wore. The dress was simple but looking so elegant, one of Dylan’s favorites. She had chosen it carefully, hoping that tonight would mark the beginning of something new in her life. Tonight was supposed to be a special one, a moment of celebration. After five years of a strained, childless marriage, she finally had news that could bring them closer to love, she finally had something that would make him love her the most. Her hand gently rested on her stomach, where her secret was hidden. A child. Their first child. She had rehearsed the moment in her head over and over again, with the soft glow of candlelight, the gentle music playing in the background, and Dylan smiling as she told him the news. He would be totally surprised, maybe even overwhelmed, but she was certain he would be happy about the news that got to him. This baby was the glue that could fix everything that has been broken over the years. The sound of the front door opening brought her back to reality. She glanced at the clock on the wall. 11:45 PM Dylan was supposed to be home hours ago. Her heart pounded as she hurried downstairs to greet him. There he was looking, tall, handsome, every bit the polished businessman she had married. But something was off about him today. His suit was slightly rumpled, his tie loosened, and his expression distant, and this wasn't usual. He barely looked at her as he stepped inside, his phone already in his hand, texting someone else and not giving her the concentration. “Dylan,” she greeted softly, trying to sound upbeat despite the growing pit in her stomach. “You’re late.” “I had a meeting that ran over,” he said, brushing past her and tossing his jacket onto the nearest chair in the sitting room. “You know how these things go in the office." She smiled faintly, trying to ignore the unease creeping into her chest. “I made dinner for us. Your favorite. I thought we could have a nice evening together as a couple.” He didn’t respond to the words. Instead, he loosened his tie and walked toward the liquor cabinet. She followed him, her heart beating faster than usual. Something felt really wrong, very wrong. “I have something to tell you though,” she started, her voice trembling slightly with fear. She waited for him to turn around, to show some kind of interest, but he was already pouring himself a drink, his back to her. “Dylan, it’s really important,” she pressed, her heart pounding in her chest so fast and louder than usual. He finally turned, a glass of whiskey in hand, his eyes meeting hers with a detached, almost bored expression. “What is it, Amelia?” She took a deep breath, summoning all her courage that was about to die. This was the moment she had been waiting for all her marriage life. The moment that could change everything in her Marriage. “I’m... I'm...” For a split second, she saw something flicker in his eyes, surprise, perhaps. But it vanished as quickly as it had come. He took a sip of his drink, his face unreadable and his expression strange. “It's obvious you don't have anything important to say” he said coldly. She smiled nervously, trying so hard not to let his reaction weigh her down. “I do have something important to say. Please, stop interrupting me. It's really good news, and I believe it will bring us together. Couples are meant to spend time together. Isn’t it, Dylan?” Dylan didn’t answer right away. Instead, he turned away from her, walking toward the large floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the city. Silence filled the room, thick and heavy building in tension between the both. Amelia’s heart sank with every second that passed. Finally, he spoke up, his voice low and cold. “We need to talk.” The words hit her like a Sharp dagger right in the chest. “Talk? About what?” He turned back to face her, and she saw something in his eyes that made her blood run cold. Indifference. “About us. About the divorce.” The world seemed to stop spinning for a moment. “D-divorce?” she stammered in confusion, her voice barely a whisper. “What are you talking about?” Dylan sighed, as if the conversation was tedious. “I’ve been meaning to bring it up for a while now. I didn’t want to do this tonight, but since you mentioned the baby in your womb…” He walked over to the side table and pulled out a sleek black folder. He tossed it onto the table in front of her. “These are the divorce papers. You should sign them as soon as you can." Amelia’s vision blurred as she stared at the papers, her mind racing with anxiety. This isn't happening now. Not now. Not when she had just told him about the baby in her womb. Not after everything she had planned for tonight, not after everything she had in mind. “You… you’re joking, right?” she asked, her voice shaking with disbelief, while she added a shivering smile. Dylan looked at her with the same detached expression, as if her pain meant nothing to him. “I’m not joking, Amelia. This marriage hasn’t worked for a long time and I don't think it would work now. You know that as well as I do. It’s better if we end it now, before things get worse and toxic.” “But… the good news” she whispered, tears welling up in her eyes like river's. “Can't you at least listen to know what I have to say, Dylan. Doesn’t that mean anything to you? It could change your thoughts.” He looked away, almost as if looking at me could make him change his mind, as if my face would inconvenience his lifestyle. “It won't change anything nor will it change my thoughts. You’ll be taken care of. Financially, I mean. But this marriage is over and we should go our own ways.” Amelia felt like she was suffocating in her own world. Her chest tightened, her mind swirling with confusion and hurt. How could he be so heartless to do such a thing at the time she needed him the most? How could he throw their marriage away so easily, like a piece of old clothes? “Who is she?” Amelia demanded, her voice rising with desperation and anger. Dylan’s eyes flickered, just for a moment. And then, as if on cue, his phone buzzed on the table. He glanced at it briefly, and that was all it took. Amelia saw the name light up on the screen, Vanessa Her blood ran cold with the name she saw. “It’s not what you think,” Dylan said, but his voice lacked conviction. Amelia’s world shattered one that she needed love the most. Vanessa, the woman she had long suspected, was more than just a rumor. It was real. They were real and not rumors. “You’re cheating on me,” she whispered, the realization crashing down on her like a wave. Dylan didn’t deny anything. He simply looked at her with a mixture of pity and annoyance. “This marriage was never about love, Amelia. You know that, so let us stop hiding the fact.” She stepped back, her heart breaking into pieces. How had everything gone so wrong? How had her life spiraled into this nightmare? Tears blurred her vision, but she forced herself to look him in the eyes, as anger started to eat her up. “I’m not signing those papers,” she said firmly, her voice trembling with rage of boiling anger. “You won’t get rid of me that easily.” Dylan’s jaw tightened, his patience clearly wearing thin by the seconds. “You’ll sign them. Sooner or later.” He walked toward the door, grabbing his coat. “I have an important meeting,” he said coldly, as if nothing had just happened. “Don’t wait up.” The door slammed shut behind him, leaving Amelia standing alone in the empty room, her world falling apart around her, with her heart feeling as if it wanted to pull out of her chest. She looked down at the divorce papers, her hands shaking with fury and her head with anger. The baby she carried was supposed to save their marriage, not end it. How could he throw it all away so easily? How could he betray her like this? Her breath came in shallow gasps as a flood of emotions overwhelmed her rage, pain, betrayal. She needed to do something as soon as possible. She needed to fight back. She couldn’t let Dylan walk away from her like this, not without a fight. Her phone buzzed on the table. She picked it up, her heart pounding as she saw an unexpected message flash across the screen of her phone. It was from Ethan Collins. "Amelia. Long time. I need to see you. Tonight." Her heart skipped a beat as she read the message. "Ethan? Why now?" She asked herself.
