Ruby Rue
I was furious when Begonia and Mary kissed my mates right in front of me. They didn't seem to understand that Hayes and Zylon didn't want them. Begonia even touched Hayes's d**k, which sent me spiraling. I was filled with so much anger that I could feel myself shaking. My power surged within me, and I unleashed it without even realizing it. I sent Begonia flying across the yard. Ria later explained that it was telekinesis that sent her flying, and I could also manipulate the weather.
I stormed away, wanting to take a walk to process what had happened, but my mates followed me. They were panicking and trying to convince me that they didn't care about those girls. I believed them, but I wanted them to sweat a little.
"Go out on a date with us," Hayes suggested.
I furrowed my brow. " Date?"
" Yes,"
"With both of you?" I looked between them.
"Yes," Zylon nodded.
"Okay."
"Friday," Hayes said.
I nodded and turned away, my heart pounding in my ears. I walked toward the pack house and headed straight to the two-bedroom suite that Ael and Joe shared.
When I knocked on the door, Joe opened it. I was stunned by my friend's appearance. His eyes were red and puffy, as if he had been crying, and his hair was a mess; he looked sad.
"Joe, what happened? Are you okay?" I asked as I entered the cozy living room. He only shook his head, and tears rolled down his cheeks. I pulled him into a tight hug. When we pulled away, I sat down on the couch.
"What is it?"
He took a deep breath and said, "I'm gay." I had already suspected this. Being gay was not popular in the pack—many packs, in fact—and it was frowned upon. Those who came out often faced relentless bullying and even arrest if caught in the act of intimacy. It was a lingering effect of our former alpha's father's conservative beliefs.
"Thank you for telling me," I smiled at him.
He took another deep breath. "I... I found my mate four weeks ago. I didn't tell any of you guys about it," I stared at him, surprised.
"Mate? Why didn't you tell us, Joe?"
"B... because he didn't acknowledge me." My heart sank for him, and I took his hand in mine. Of all people, I understood how it felt to be overlooked by your mate.
"I... I didn't think much of it because he looked shocked. I thought I'd give him time to process, but he never came to me as the weeks went by. I approached him a few days ago after training to discuss the bond, but he didn't want the bond and denied being gay." Anger surged through me.
"Who is he?" I asked slowly, my tone deadly.
"Gamma Shane," The bastard! Joe cried in my arms. "He rejected me right there," he sobbed, and I held him even closer. My poor friend. Being rejected by your mate is one of the worst things that can happen to a werewolf; your inner wolf would be in constant pain, and they might even leave due to the rejection. That was why mates never rejected one another. It was the first time I had heard of someone rejecting their mate.
"He's an i***t. I'm going to kick his ass," I murmured.
"I want to accept his rejection, but I'm scared my wolf will leave me," Joe admitted.
"How does your wolf feel about it?" I asked.
"He said we should go ahead. He is tired of being in pain as well. He hoped Shane would change his mind, but he didn't,"
"You are strong. You'll survive this," I encouraged. Joe stood and inhaled deeply, placing a hand on his chest. I stood up and took his free hand in mine.
"I, Joel Anwar, accept Shane Barnabas's rejection," he said, then fell to his knees. His skin was hot, and he stifled a scream. He paled quickly as if life was slipping from him, yet he felt as though he was on fire, but I held his hand tightly. Ria encouraged me to do so. It felt as if his wolf was trying to channel my strength. Ria connected to Joe's wolf, and he tapped into some of my magical powers. I released it freely as she instructed. His body temperature began to cool down, and he was panting for breath. Slowly, he stood up and looked at me with kindness and love.
"Rue, you saved my wolf's life. I don't know how, but you did. Thank you," he said, cracking a small smile. We hugged again. Just then, Ael walked in, and we pulled away from the embrace to look at him. Ael's eyebrows were raised.
"What's going on? Joe, you're out of the room,"
I glanced at Joe, who nodded, so he hadn't told Ael either. "Yes, the flu is gone."
I stayed with the guys, watching Fast and Furious 5. Both Joe and Ael couldn't stop talking about it since its release in April. By the time I was leaving, I realized I was late to meet Beth. I rushed to the café and was relieved to see she wasn't as depressed as I had feared. However, it was clear she didn't want to dwell on her own issues.
Beth asked me all kinds of questions about the alpha twins and me. I filled her in on everything that happened last night and earlier today, including how I handled those bitches in the morning. We couldn't stop laughing.
"Wait, so you're going out on a date with them tomorrow? Does that mean you've accepted them as your mates?" she asked.
I froze at her question. Had I accepted them? Did I forgive them? I wasn't sure, but I felt no anger towards them anymore.
"I'm not sure. We'll see how it goes tomorrow,"
"What about Henry and Jay? They are crazy about you," she continued.
"I don't know that either," I said, clenching my teeth nervously.
"By the way, Jay and I kissed," I confessed. She gasped, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
"And…"
I shrugged. "It was short, and I felt nothing for him."
"Did you tell him?"
"I've been avoiding his calls."
Just then, as if on cue, I sensed him approaching and whipped my head towards the door. Jay walked in, wearing all black. His eyes scanned the room and landed on mine. A smirk crept onto his lips as he approached our table.
"You've been avoiding me," he said, placing his palms on the table and lowering his gaze to meet mine.
"How did you find me?" I narrowed my eyes at him.
"Doesn't matter," he replied, taking a seat next to me. The werewolves in the café shot disdainful glances at him, but he didn't seem to care. His friend, the one who had been eyeing Beth, sat next to her. Beth frowned at him, which only seemed to please him as he shifted closer.
"You guys shouldn't be here," I hissed at Jay.
"We know, but I was desperate to see you," he grinned.
"Why?" I frowned.
"I missed you, Rue. I thought we were friends, but it seemed that sweet kiss startled you away," he said, looking genuinely concerned. I shook my head, denying it. Just then, we heard a whimper.
"Mate," someone said.
Jay turned his head toward the voice, his expression falling, and then he murmured a curse, "Fuck." I followed his gaze and my eyes widened at who was standing a few feet away, eyes locked on Jay.
