Hayes' POV I scoffed. I should have let the rogue live. No f*****g way. I showed no mercy to my enemies. My brother was gracious enough to give them a chance to leave the territory, but they decided to get cocky and lust after my woman. If I had let him live, that rogue would have started running his mouth about my mate. Ruby had once used her shielding abilities to protect everyone there. I couldn't risk that. She could hate me or call me a murderer, but at least she'd be safe. "She didn't mean that," Zylon said, handing me a glass of bourbon—the only thing we shared in common, aside from Ruby. I gulped it down. "I don't care," I replied. I cared very much about what my mate thought of me, but I wouldn't admit that to my brother and friends. I wasn't wired that way. The door opened, and Shane and Tate walked in, their faces stern. They were in Beta and Gamma mode. "How did they get into the territory?" I asked. "Blind spots. They used backgrounds," Tate replied. I had been concerned about the increasing number of rogue attacks occurring in packs throughout the city, but it was reassuring that there hadn't been any fatalities. What worried me was the frequent hunters we spotted in the city. A few wolves had been found dead in recent weeks. The Alphas were coming together in a month to discuss it and find a way to eliminate the growing threats. Hunters have been a problem since we existed. We could deal with them, especially since there were only a few, but they were deadly to our kind and quite strong. "The alphas are coming tomorrow," Tate reminded us. I groaned in exhaustion. I wasn't in the mood to entertain, but as my brother made clear, we couldn't afford to alienate any of them at the moment. We'd reject their proposal of marrying their daughters to us and offer an alternative in return. "Is everything ready?" Zylon asked. "Yes, they arrive at 11 A.M. Introductions will be done, and then dinner in the evening, the next day, meeting," Shane informed. "Who's attending the dinner?" I asked, hoping my mate couldn't attend. "Everyone of higher rank," he replied. Ruby would definitely be there. Gods, she would hate us more once she realized why Alpha Prius and Alpha Temmus were in our pack. "Security?" "Has been increased. The twenty elites will be in charge of that," Tate answered calmly. The twenty elites are skilled fighters who trained under Archie Rothwell. They are fierce. Tate and Shane had every detail covered, and at that moment, I was glad we chose them for their positions. "Is everyone in your family attending the dinner?" I asked Tate slowly, playing with the glass in my hand. He scoffed. "Is there someone from my family you wouldn't want attending the dinner, Alpha?" "No." "Then the Rothwells will be there," he smirked. He was enjoying the fact that his sister had given me a hard time. He hadn't fully forgiven us for hurting her. ... The alphas and their entourage arrived at the exact time we had predicted. They introduced their daughters to us: Valarie Temmus and Silvina Prius. They were respectable, beautiful ladies. However, they reeked of desperation, and one of them—Silvina—talked too much. That was a bummer for Zylon since he enjoyed silence. My mind drifted to my mate and how we found her in the water, wearing almost nothing. How could she let those male friends of hers see her like that? I hated it. Anger was starting to bubble within me, but Ace pulled me back to the moment we saw her in the water. My c**k throbbed just thinking about it. There was nothing I wanted more than to plow her. The kiss we shared a few nights ago came rushing back to me. It felt so good. If kissing her felt that amazing, what would happen if we were to claim her? I could feel my blood pulsing with desire. I went to the bedroom and wrapped my hand around my erection, envisioning Ruby naked beneath me. I groaned as I indulged in memories of her body, her skin, her lips, and her big, beautiful eyes. I imagined her moaning as I took her, the wetness of her core. I felt the tension building as I continued. "Fuck..." I staggered a bit as I rode out my high, my heart pounding. After I calmed down, I washed up for dinner. I changed into black pants and a plain white shirt, rolling up my sleeves to my elbows. 'You're late. Come downstairs,' Zylon mind-linked. 'Is she there?' I asked, knowing he understood who I was referring to. 'No, but her mother and brother are. Maybe she heard what was going on and decided to skip it,' he replied. I shook my head. If Ruby heard the real reason for the alphas' visit, I highly doubted she'd miss it. She would want to see for herself and likely provoke and insult us. 'Oh, she'll come, and we better be ready, brother,' I sighed. I made my way downstairs. All the guests had arrived and were chatting and drinking. I was discussing the meeting scheduled for tomorrow with my brother when Valarie spotted me. She came over. She exchanged pleasantries with my brother while her older brother, Morgan, stood beside her. He was fine, but he tended to talk too much. Sweet gods. "You two suit each other," Morgan commented. We hadn't yet informed them that this union wouldn't happen. "We do, don't we?" Valarie grinned up at me. "How do I look, Alpha?" she purred. She wore a pink dress and heels. "You look okay," I replied curtly. "Okay? That's not good enough," she looped her arm around mine. Ace growled in my head. He didn't want anyone but Ruby touching us, and I felt the same way. I detached my arm from hers, and she let out a wince that she thought was cute, but I cringed. She was probably one of those ladies who acted like a baby and used baby voices. I noticed Zylon raising an eyebrow, amusement evident on his face, but that expression faded when Silvina stood beside him with a broad smile. "Oh, look at you alphas! You're winning in life. Valeria and Silvina are beautiful," Morgan gushed. "Not only that, but they are kind and would make excellent Lunas of this pack." I caught Gloria's eye out of the corner of my vision. She was chatting with our mother. When our eyes locked, I felt awful, as if I were cheating on her daughter just by standing next to this woman and not making it clear that I wouldn't choose her as my Luna. I was about to make an excuse to leave when the scent of flowers mixed with honey filled the air. Zylon and I stiffened. She was here—my mate had arrived at the party. Slowly, we turned our heads, and my breath simply stopped. " Gods of mercy, who is that beautiful woman?" Morgan asked.
