I didn't see Tate the entire day yesterday after the rogue attack. I had so many questions, especially about why they were securing the pack.
I got ready for the day and went straight to Tate's room the next morning. When I couldn't find him, I headed to the kitchen and caught him just before he left.
"Morning," he said, kissing my temple.
"Morning. Are we having rogue problems in the pack?" I asked right away. He paused, looking at me before shaking his head.
"Then why were you securing the pack?" I pressed. "And who are those twenty men I saw at training last time?"
"We're fine, Rue. Securing the pack happens at least four times a year. Those men are Dad's soldiers, and they're helping out while we have guests," he explained.
"Guests?"
"Yes, Alpha Temmus and Alpha Prius are coming for a visit," he said. I knew those alphas. They were our allies.
"Why?"
He sighed deeply, his gaze fixed on me with a contemplative intensity. "Well... they're coming for alpha business, but also..." He trailed off, and an uneasy flutter stirred in my chest. "They're bringing their daughters to introduce to the alphas," he continued, and my heart plummeted into the pit of my stomach.
I sank onto the nearest barstool, the air around me suddenly stifling. My voice was barely above a whisper as I asked, "Why?"
Tate ran a hand through his tousled hair. "There were discussions years ago about forging our alliance strongly by selecting their daughters to become Lunas," he explained.
"But our pack is the strongest," I protested. Ria was in a frenzy, her panic reverberating through me.
"You know as well as I do that one can never have too much power in our world," he replied, his tone unnervingly calm, which only added to my agitation.
"Are the alpha twins going to choose those women?" I dared to ask, my voice trembling.
"I'm not entirely sure. However, they were taken aback to discover that the talks of them choosing the women had not been dismissed. It was all part of their father's plans before he passed,"
"I see," I murmured, though a knot tightened in my stomach.
"Are you going to attend the dinner? It's customary for you to be there, but I would understand if you chose not to," he studied me with concern.
"I don't know," I sighed, and left the kitchen. My mind was flooded with doubts and anxieties. The thought of my mates possibly choosing other women while I stood helplessly on the sidelines sent a chill down my spine.
'Or they won't. Our mates love us," Ria whispered. I struggled to believe her words.
I was sitting on my bay window, waiting for Beth to help me get ready for dinner that night. After some persuasion from Ria, I decided to attend.
There was a knock on my door, and I checked the time. It was only noon so that it couldn't be Beth. She was supposed to come at 3 PM.
"Come in," I called. A servant walked in and told me someone was there for me. I nodded and followed her out.
In the living room was Damson Jackson. "Damson," I greeted. He smiled and leaned in to kiss my cheek.
"Hi, Miss Ruby," he breathed, ever the gentleman. We exchanged polite pleasantries, and I asked him to take a seat beside me.
"What brings you here?"
"I need to talk to you about something important," he said, clearing his throat. I knew where this was going—he had been wanting me to choose him as my chosen mate.
"I want you to choose me over your other suitors as your chosen," he said, taking my hands in his. I knew Damson would make a good mate, no doubt. Ria stirred inside me, reminding me that we had two mates and an alpha after us. She was right. Henry wanted the same and was looking for a way to sever my bond with the alpha twins. However, my heart belonged to my true mates. They had the bond on their side. I didn't want to lead anyone on.
"Damson," I started, "you're a good guy and would make a fine mate, but I have two mates already, and we're still navigating our situation right now."
"I will wait, Miss Ruby. The alphas were foolish to deny the bond. They don't deserve you. Please forget them and choose me. I promise I will be good to you."
"I know you will, but I can't be with you the way you want. My heart wouldn't allow it, and it would be unfair to make promises I can't keep," I told him softly. He looked like he was on the verge of tears, and I felt terrible.
'You're doing the right thing,' Ria said.
He exhaled and nodded. "I understand. Thank you for your kindness and honesty, Miss Ruby."
"Please call me Ruby or Rue. No formalities," I replied.
"Does that mean I'm a friend?" he asked, looking hopeful. I smiled and nodded. To my surprise, he pulled me into a hug, which I returned just as the door opened. Beth walked in, eyes wide and mouth agape. Damson stood up.
"I should be leaving. Thank you, Ruby Rue," he said.
Damson walked to the front door with a smile. Beth raised her perfect eyebrows at me.
"He looked like he won some prize," she said. I took her arm and walked up the stairs with her.
"Friendship?"
Beth looked very excited to help me prepare. "Are you ready?"
"So ready," I smirked. If Hayes and Zylon wanted to choose other women, that was okay, but they would have to do it while looking at me, and I would be the most beautiful of them all.
"Let's get started!"
We played music and danced as I got ready for the party. After an hour or more, I was finally ready.
"You look amazing," she beamed. I glanced in the mirror and admired my reflection. I wore a silk, strapless red dress with a low neckline and an open back. The dress fell just above my knees and featured a small slit on my thigh. My hair was styled in an elegant, messy bun, with some strands braided and wispy tendrils framing my face. My makeup was subtle—just a thin line of eyeliner, mascara, and red lipstick to complement my dress. I looked stunning.
