Tidal shifts

Serene's POV: 

 I woke up before the sun had risen so I could swim in the secluded lagoon around the cove.

 I was feeling tense thinking about being aboard a boat in the middle of the ocean with humans. I took off the short, yellow summer dress I was wearing and dropped it onto the sand at my feet. I stood bare and exposed in the crisp morning air.

The breeze gently blowing my hair over my shoulders to cascade down my back sweeping the top of my perky behind. My n*****s stood at attention as I made my way towards the ocean. 

I walked out into the gentle waves, glittering scales started to make their way up my legs before submerging myself completely into the cool water.

My legs started to form a fin that shimmered and shone as it took off over the drop off and into the caverns that lay within the reef. 

A curious manta ray glided towards me and ran its fin across my arm in greeting. He recognised my aura as royal, despite being miles away from my kingdom, royals of my kind have an aura about them that any sea creature can recognise. My new friend swam in circles around me before bowing his head and heading back the way he had come. 

I made my way back towards the shore. Peaking out to make sure the coast was clear of humans. I pulled myself up onto a rock that meets the shore. My fin split into two legs and my glittering turquoise scales started to disappear leaving me naked in my human form. The sun was rising and I turned to face the ocean with the warm morning sun kissing my back.

The day was going smoothly so far. We had six couples on the boat for the tour around the outer islands. They had just finished a light lunch and are getting ready to do some snorkeling and paddle boarding. 

I was down in the gully cleaning up when I felt a shock wave ripple beneath us. I knew straight away something was wrong. Something was happening in the deeper parts of the ocean. I gripped the counter as the boat rocked from the disturbance. I could hear shouting coming from above deck. 

“It must have been an earthquake, everyone remains calm. I will call the coast guard to check on things.” Said Marty, the captain doing his best to keep his voice firm and calm. 

I have been away a few weeks but I know that we were in negotiations and collaborating with the other two ocean kingdoms over some missing Merfolk. 

It started two years ago, before my mother passed away. Merfolk from across the ocean have been disappearing without a trace. My mother came home after consulting on the subject with the other rulers and that night died in her sleep. There was no trace of foul play, but I have suspicions that there is something more sinister happening. It’s not a battle I’m looking forward to venturing into, that's for sure. But I will find answers when the time is right. 

“Serene! Get up here and give us a hand will ya?!” Yelled Marty down the steps. 

Oh gods, this isn’t going to be good. I carefully made my way up the steps to the main deck to find the tourists squished together talking loudly. The boat continued to rock but the strength of the movement was weakening. 

“Serene, don’t just stand there ya goose, everything has fallen all over the place, help Tom pack up and secure everything ready for our return trip. We need to hang tight. We will probably have to wait out a tsunami warning before we go anywhere, but keep that under ya hat. We don’t want to freak these fellas out.” He said gesturing towards the tourists. 

I set to work helping Tom, the deckhand, get the tourists water, snacks and blankets before securing everything. We needed to be prepared for further shocks as well as our departure. Things seemed to have calmed down and everyone started to relax. 

Marty got through to the coast guard who confirmed it was recorded as an earthquake and we were to wait out the tsunami warning to be on the safe side. I knew better. There was no earthquake. It was then another deep rumble started to rock the ocean and the boat with it. I knew I had to go and see what was happening but how do I slip into the sea unnoticed? 

And what kind of danger would I be putting myself in?

 Marty came from the control room and suggested everyone go below deck. As he was leading everyone down the steps, I took this as my opportunity. 

Sliding around to the side railing, I neatly dove down into the unsettled water. Under the surface I quickly took off my shorts and bikini bottoms just as my fin started to form. I also took off my crew polo, leaving me in just my white bikini top, I tied my clothes to the anchor rope.

 Looking around I noticed several sea creatures quickly approaching me in panic.

 A hammerhead shark nudging at me as though trying to get me to hurry towards the commotion. What are they trying to show me?

 If I am to be queen I needed to be brave.

Gently patting the shark I made my way to pass her, only to find her and the other sea creatures were staying right by my side. Together we swam into the depths and through a narrow channel, a part of the ocean I wasn’t familiar with.

 As I swam, I began seeing disturbances on the ocean floor, maybe from a type of explosion. Whoever had been here appeared to be nowhere in sight. Unease swirled in my stomach and my skin prickled with anticipation.

The end of the channel turned upwards into a sea cave that had created an air pocket. I approached slowly, with only my shark friend and an octopus continuing with me. Using the rocky cavern walls I carefully swam up towards the air pocket and the beach that lay within it. I heard voices before I breached the surface. 

Slowly slipping my head above the water my eyes roamed the inside of the cave before they landed on something I had never expected to see.
