CHAPTER ONE
I opened my eyes to find someone watching me. Cold eyes. Dark eyes. Eyes that held something dangerous beneath their surface, a faint red shimmer that made my breath catch. My heart hammered against my ribs as I tried to make sense of where I was. Moonlight filtered through unfamiliar windows, casting silver shadows across rumpled sheets that twisted around my bare legs. The air felt thick, heavy with something I couldn't name. I was naked beneath a stranger's body. Pain radiated through every muscle, sharp and insistent, while my head felt like it might split open. I pressed my palm against my temple, trying to chase away the fog clouding my thoughts. "Who are you?" My voice came out hoarse, trembling. "And who am I?" His answer came swiftly and certainly. "You are my mate. You are mine." The man above me looked like he'd been carved from stone, all sharp angles and perfect symmetry. His dark hair fell across his forehead, and those eyes... those impossibly dark eyes watched me like I was something precious and fragile. Something that might shatter if he wasn't careful. My fingers twisted into the duvet beneath me as panic clawed its way up my throat. I squeezed my eyes shut, desperate to remember anything at all, how I got here, who I was, why this felt both terrifying and somehow right. Nothing. My mind was a blank slate, empty and echoing. Heat rolled off him in waves, and despite everything, I found myself drawn toward it. My body moved on instinct, pressing closer, and the contact sent fire racing across my skin. His hands mapped paths along my sides, leaving trails of tingling warmth wherever he touched. When I opened my eyes again, his expression had changed. Darkened. Those eyes glowed faintly red now, and fear shot through me so sharply I tried to pull away. He wouldn't let me. His hand caught my chin, turning my face back to his, and then his mouth was on mine. Demanding. Hungry. His teeth caught my lower lip, biting just hard enough to make me gasp. The sensation overwhelmed everything else. He moved inside me in one fluid stroke, and I cried out, the intensity stealing my breath and my thoughts. I tried to escape, but my body felt weak, uncoordinated. Words tumbled from my lips between desperate breaths. "What... why... are you... doing this?" He understood my broken question. His voice rumbled against my mouth. "Because you are mine and I am yours." Something in his tone made my racing heart slow. He must have felt me trembling because his movements were gentle and careful. Deliberate. Then he shifted our positions entirely, sitting up and pulling me into his lap so I straddled him. He leaned back against the headboard, cradling my head as he drew my face close to his. His eyes had stopped glowing, settled into something calmer. It was like a lake frozen over in winter. My erratic heartbeat finally steadied. "I am your husband," he said quietly. "You are safe with me. I will never hurt you." The words felt like a vow. Something absolute and unbreakable. I found myself nodding, unable to explain why I believed him when I couldn't even remember my own name. "My name is Kaelith." He held my gaze, patient and unwavering. "Say it." "Kaelith." The name felt strange on my tongue. Foreign and familiar all at once. Something shifted in his expression. He captured my lips again, gentler this time, tasting and exploring as if he were memorising every inch of my mouth. When he pulled back, my lips felt swollen and sensitive. He buried his face in the curve of my neck and began moving again, slow and steady. The sensation built and built until I thought I might come apart. "Kaelith." His name escaped my lips like a prayer, like the only word I knew. The tension inside me coiled tighter and tighter until it finally snapped. I tensed, my body arching and thrashing for several long moments before everything went dark. Sunlight woke me. I blinked against the brightness streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows, momentarily disoriented. The room around me looked expensive, with elegant furniture, pristine white walls, and everything arranged with careful precision. Everything except me. I sat up slowly, relieved to find I was wearing clothes now. A soft nightgown that definitely hadn't been there last night. My cheeks burned as I realised who must have dressed me. Footsteps approached from somewhere beyond the bedroom door. My entire body tensed, breath catching in my throat. The door opened. The man who entered stole whatever air remained in my lungs. He looked different in daylight, no less beautiful, but somehow more real. His dark hair was styled back from his face, revealing a strong jawline and high cheekbones. His skin held a golden tan, and his eyes... His eyes were black. Pure, deep black. Like a never-ending abyss. Not red. Had I imagined that? "Are you alright?" Kaelith moved closer with measured steps. "You fainted last night." Heat flooded my face as memories of exactly why I'd fainted rushed back in vivid detail. "I'm fine." My voice came out like gravel scraping stone. He retrieved a glass of water from the nightstand and handed it to me before settling onto the couch across from the bed. Deliberately maintaining distance between us, such a stark contrast to how he'd held me hours before. The realisation left me feeling strangely hollow. I fidgeted with the sheets bunched in my lap, suddenly aware that I should probably check if I was actually wearing anything. A glance confirmed the nightgown was real. Relief mixed with embarrassment. "I know you have questions." Kaelith folded his hands together, his posture formal. Almost cold. "Ask whatever you need to know." "You said your name is Kaelith." I watched him nod. "Then my first question is simple." I met his dark, unreadable gaze. "Who am I?"
