The wasteland
“Give her ten more lashes of the whip until she confesses.“ Darius the kingdom's knight said .
“I didn't steal anything.“ I cried.
“Still lying?“ One of the prosecutors asked.
“Father, you know I would never do a thing like this?“
My father sat on his throne glaring at me like a total stranger. He didn't utter a word.
“Father, please tell them to stop.“ He still didn't utter a word.
I turned around to look at Marwen, the grand elder of the court .
“You have known me since childhood, you know I can never steal anything. Please tell them.“
She didn't speak .
Whim! Whim!
The whip lashed on my back, heavy and painful. I fell forwards.
“Lash her more until she confesses.“ The knight barked.
The whip landed on my back again this time stronger , heavier and more painful than the first.
I winced and squirmed in pain.
“I didn't do it.“ I said firmly.
Olyria ran forwards wore a smirk, leaned closer and whispered;
“Why not just confess and they'll leave you?“
“No one here will ever believe you.“ She added.“
“If you didn't do it, then how did Olyria's jewelry get into your luggage?“ My father asked sternly.
“Someone must have planted it there to frame me.“ I said.
A round of laughter followed.
“Someone wants to frame an Omega? Hilarious.“ They all laughed.
I have always been a laughing stock in this court I grew up in, despite my father being the wolf king.
“Father, you know my character, I would never steal anything.“ I begged.
I hoped that even for one moment he would believe me .
He never does. He always looks at me with contempt and hatred. I was the pup that had sent his fated mate to the grave.
Whim!! , the whip landed on my back again, jolting me from my thoughts. I looked at my father for one moment, with eyes pleading for mercy. If only he would tell them to stop, they will but there is no iota of pity in his expression. Instead he looked at me the way you look at a stranger who has committed a crime.
Olyria ran forwards — eyes wet and dripping with tears.
“Please spare her. You will get her killed.“ She cried.
“The jewelry has been found there is no need to lash her like this. She is just an Omega, her healing ability is not strong enough.“
“Kind Olyria , even now she is still pleading on her behalf.“ people whispered.
“You don't deserve a sister like her, even now she is pleading on your behalf and your whole life all you do is try to harm her or cause her pain. From the moment your mother died birthing you, I knew you were a bad omen , a curse. You go about spreading evil.“ My father barked.
That part where he talked about my mother dying while birthing me, me being a bad omen, it wasn't new. He has said it always, he sang it like a song. It was almost like a rhythm in my ears, except that it was a bad one.
If Olyria twists her ankle and I was close by , she would frame me and my father would always believe her.
I hoped for a day when I would get a chance to look him in the eyes and tell him that I hadn't asked to be born, if he hadn't put me in my mother's womb, I wouldn't have been here and I would never have been a bad omen. If I'm a bad omen, if I'm a curse then he is part of that curse.
Whiiim! Another lash landed, hot and painful, each one more painful than the other.
“I will give you one last chance to confess and all of this will be over.“ My father said,
“I didn't steal anything.“ I said firmly.
“You are still lying?“ My father bellowed.
“You know the punishment for theft is banishment?“ My father said,
“And I won't spare you even if you are my daughter.“
“Do as you please but know that I didn't steal anything.“ I shot back.
Thick warm blood had begun trickling down my back. It drenched the fabric of my dress.
“You shall not only be banished if you do not confess, you shall be banished to Ashmoon.“ My father pronounced.
“Ashmoon? I heard rain hasn't fallen there in three years and the only fountain they had been managing, the cursed alpha sealed it. There is famine there, people and livestock are dying of thirst. Plants have withered.“ A woman who stood close by, close enough that I could hear every syllable of the words she just spoke, whispered.
“Oh my goddess , are they going to banish her to that cursed place? Why can't she just confess?“ Another lady whispered.
“I'm giving you one last chance to confess.“ My father barked.
My vision was becoming dim now, my voice was faint.
“I …. I … didn't steal anything.“ I stuttered.
“You this obstinate child, you killed your mother and you have hardened your heart to death. Fine, give her five more lashes and throw her to Ashmoon.“ My father pronounced.
He pronounced it the same way you condemn a traitor, a criminal!
I looked at him, eyes pleading for mercy, for a reverse of the judgement but he didn't pay attention, neither did he have sympathy. He went further to take the seal from the hands of the grand elder and with it he sealed the judgement that sealed my fate.
“Take her away.“ He barked.
I watched him stand up, I watch him approach the exit of the court and I gathered all the strength that the whip left and spoke;
“Father!“ I screamed.
He turned around to look at me, to look at the daughter he had condemned, the daughter dying slowly.
“It would have been better if I was never born, if you hadn't put me in my mother's womb. It would have been better if I never had a father.“ I muttered.
In my blurry vision I watched him stand there and contemplate if he was making a bad decision but he turned around and for moments I watched the man I had loved all my life and called father, even though he has never called me daughter, walk away , without looking back to see the daughter drenched in the pool of her blood and the whip marks that sting her.
