Before long they arrived at Jamestown, the neighborhood in which Emilia stayed. It was located right next to the slums of the city. However, not a poor neighborhood, the families here were mostly corporate workers.
High-rise apartments are found in this neighborhood
The Rolls-Royce caught the attention of many neighbors who stopped what they were doing to admire the car.
Daniel, who was the last to get out of the car said to Noah, “I don’t need you to be following me around all the time.”
“Yes sir.” Noah responded, “What should we do about the Watts.”
“If they are wise enough, they would back off.”
“What if they don’t?” Noah questioned.
Daniel just smiled and caught up with Emilia.
With Jessica in his arms, Daniel took the elevator up six stories to get to Penny's house.
“Uncle Ben and Aunt Abi are staying with me,” Emilia informed Daniel as she opened the door.
Inside the living room, Ben Nyx, their old butler, was watching the evening news. His wife, Aunt Abi- their old maid, was making dinner in the kitchen.
It surprised Uncle Ben to see Emilia bringing a man home with her. But when he put on his glasses to take a closer look, he was shocked to see who it was.
“Young master, is that you?” Uncle Ben cautiously asked.
Before Daniel could reply Jessica had already beaten her to it, “Grandpa Ben, he is my uncle.” She said excitedly.
"I can't believe you are finally home. I have to inform Aunt Abi to prepare a feast. Your return must be celebrated.”
Ben Nyx was a soft-spoken, humble man who worked for the Carter family. He has known the siblings since they were mere embryos and treats the siblings like his own. This was especially true when it came to raising the Carter siblings after the demise of their parents.
Daniel went to hug the old man. Uncle Ben and Aunt Abi have taken care of them since childhood. After the demise of their parents, the couple took the role of guardians to the siblings.
They were like parents to the siblings, especially when everyone was targeting the family fortune. They simply fought to become their guardians, since they were childless after decades of marriage and have been with them since their childhood.
Aunt Abi, who heard the commotion from the kitchen immediately dashed out to see what was happening. Surprise came over her when she laid eyes on the young master.
“Welcome home young master.” She greeted Daniel politely the moment she saw him. “Dinner will be ready in a few minutes please make yourself comfortable.”
The emotion in her voice could not escape anyone.
Aunt Abi served dinner shortly after. Aunt Abi had changed the menu and had prepared Daniel’s favorite dish. The evening passed with everyone complimenting Aunt Abi for her exceptional cooking.
After Jessica was put to bed. Uncle Ben called Emilia and Daniel back into the living room.
Daniel understood that the real show was about to begin. He sat opposite the elderly couple while Emilia sat beside her brother.
Ignoring everyone, Aunt Abi started to berate.
“Do you know how miserable Emilia was after you abandoned her and left? She was humiliated, and mocked by others because even her incompetent brother left her. She went to the office every day even when she was pregnant and spent all her time slogging her guts out. Later on, she was so angered to the point of going into premature labor. When Jessica was born, she was as tiny as a kitten, and her life was in danger. Your relatives took over the company afterward, and they still haven’t returned it to us yet! Did you know about all of this?
“You ran away as you pleased, and now you want to come back? No way! You have nothing to your name now. What makes you have the cheek to stay?”
Those words were harsh, but Daniel could not refute them.
No one was surprised by her sudden outburst. After all, they knew the intentions behind her were good.
Uncle Ben said with an austere expression, “I’m not going to beat around the bush with you. When you got the company back then, you were forced into it and had no other choice but to comply because of that incident.”
“After all both of you lacked experience in management. You couldn’t handle the growing pressure as the events unfolded right before your eyes. Leading to others and your relatives taking away most of the company and its business”
“You’ve been missing all these years too, and Emilia has been staying here to look after what is left of Carter Group- I mean Carter Logistics and Jessica, whom we are providing for. To both of us, you’re considered the heir to the company. Your absence doesn’t matter to us, but if you’re around, we know you have an obligation to your sister and niece.”
A strong sense of guilt overwhelmed Daniel as he recalled the past.
He had been fighting hard over the years, and although he achieved great accomplishments, he had failed as a brother and an uncle to Emilia and Jessica.
“I have no excuse for what happened before. However, I promise that I will treat them well in the future and fulfill my duties as a brother and an uncle. I won’t let them suffer anymore!”
Daniel paused as he took a deep breath. Determination filled his eyes. “I will make them happy. As for the Carter Group, my return is to get back everything they stole from us. No matter who it is.”
“Hmph! Trust you to have the cheek to talk about the future!” Aunt Abi said in an excited tone. “What did you do when you were needed? When your dear sister was being slandered, where were you?”
“To put it bluntly, who are you and what have you achieved to make such claims?”
He dropped to his knees and knelt in front of his adoptive parents.
“What are you doing?” Aunt Abi was stunned as she moved her body on the chair uneasily. She was just what had been held in her for so long.
“I’ve indeed let Emilia down over all these years. I failed to fulfill my duty as her Brother, and it’s only right that you’re upset with me,” Daniel said in a deep voice. “The two of you have raised us for as long as I can remember. You have been there when our parents were alive and even in death you are still looking out for us. You also went through great efforts to take care of Jessica. I will remember your kindness forever.”
“I know it’s useless to say anything now. But I hope that I can try my best to make it up to you guys, Emilia, and Jessica so that you will no longer suffer in the future.”
Daniel bent forward, and his head hit the ground!
Bang!
There was a loud sound from the ground, which was evidence of how hard the hit was!
