"Hey! Hey lady I need some help over here" a man wearing a construction uniform shouted from a corner booth trying to get Amanda's attention. " I'll be right back," Amanda said to the elderly woman that was about to tip her.
She wiped her hands on her apron before she takes a notepad and a pen and walked towards his table. " I'm sorry about that, welcome to the sunny-side-up diner what can I get you?" Amanda said politely to him.
" I'll have a house special with a cup of black coffee," he said. Amanda gave him a polite smile " coming right up" she said as she was about to walk away. " Hey you look familiar have we meet before?" the construction worker asked looking at Amanda more closely.
Amanda shifted out of the way of another waitress as she carried a tray filled with food towards a group of rowdy college kids at the back. " I think you're mistaking me for someone else," Amanda said to which the man shakes his head.
" No I'm sure I've seen you somewhere else apart from here, I just can't recall where," he said. Amanda shrugged and walked towards the counter. As she pinned his order on the notice board the chef placed a plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast along with a cup of black coffee on the counter.
" This is for that gentleman their" the chef said pointing his spatula towards a private table where a well-dressed man sat down working on a laptop while sipping from a cup of coffee". Amanda placed everything on a tray and walked towards him.
" Here's your order sir," she said placing down his order on the table in front of him. The man glanced up from his laptop and looked Amanda up and down. His gaze wasn't s****l but instead cool and calculating. " Thank you," he said before he went back to his laptop.
" Amanda the order for table four is ready" Amanda walked away to retrieve the order but she could feel the mysterious strangers gaze upon her the whole while as she worked.
As she placed down the food at the table she felt her phone vibrating in her pocket. She looked at the screen and saw that it was from the hospital. She wiped her hands on her apron and answered.
" Hello am I speaking with Amanda Smith?" she heard the doctor ask. " Yes I'm Amanda Smith," she said. " Good Day Mrs smith I'm doctor Martin from the Edenbrok hospital, I'm the one that's caring for your grandmother, I'm afraid I have bad news," the doctor said.
Amanda felt her heartbeat quicken and her palms become sweaty. " what kind of bad news?" she asked. " The infection is continuing to spread at an alarmingly fast rate, I'm sorry but we've tried everything we can she won't have long," the doctor said.
Amanda felt tears in her eyes but she quickly wiped them away. " Is there nothing you can do, there must be some way to save her?" Amanda asked. Hearing the desperation in her voice the doctor sighed. " Mame there are two options," the doctor said.
" What are they?" she asked. " The first option is medication, this would treat infected tissue but that would only slow down the sicknesss this would buy here a few more months, I've checked your grandmother's insurance it's almost enough along with a deposit of five thousand dollars we would be able to proceed " the doctor said.
" What's the other option?" she asked. " The other option would be surgery, we would remove the infected tissue and cells, this would eliminate the disease altogether but this would be quite expensive I'm afraid," the doctor said. " How much are we talking about?" Amanda asked.
"Seven hundred thousand dollars plus another seventy for rehabilitation and medications," the doctor said. Amanda's eyes went wide, she ran a hand through her hair and sighed. she doesn't have that kind of money, she once did but after her divorce, her ex-husband left with nothing leaving her to start her life over on her own.
" Could you give me until this weekend to decide?" she asked the docter. " No problem but please call me and tell me what you've decided soon, have a good day," the doctor said hanging up.
"It's going to be hard to have a good day when you've just dropped this bombshell," she thought to herself with a sigh she placed her phone back into her pocket and went back to work.
A few minutes later as she wiped a table behind the mysterious stranger her thoughts were so preoccupied with thoughts about her grandmother and how she would save her that she didn't notice when he stood and adjusted his tie before he walked towards her. " Excuse me Miss?" he said inquiring about her name.
" Oh my name is Amanda," she said taking up the plates that were left behind by the previous customers and placed them on a tray. " Mrs. Amanda I have a very attractive opportunity for you if you are interested," the man said clasping his hands behind his back.
" What kind of opportunity?" She asked cautiously. She's heard some of the other waitresses talking about this, customers that took a liking to them would ask for favors in exchange for a much larger tip.
" Your grandmother's sick is she not?" the man whispered. Amanda's eyes went wide how could he have known this she thought she was speaking to the doctor quietly. " how did you" he held up his hand cutting her off. " it doesn't matter how I know, is she ill? he asked again.
She reluctantly nods to which he nods back. " Well based off of what I've heard, you are in need of a large amount of money several figures is hard to come by" he said and glanced around the dinner. " And I'm sure this dinner isn't exactly making anything close to even cover the cheaper option" he said.
" Where are you going with this?" she asked. The man went into the pocket of his suite and took out a black and golden business card and placed it down in the table along with a six thousand dollar note" Her eyes went wide as she looked at him.
" Five thousand is for the first round of your grandmother's treatment, the other thousand if for you to do what you wish, but I know someone who's willing to pay you several figures for spending a night with them," he said. Before she could say anything he held up his hand.
"Now that five thousand dollars don't come with any strings attached, that's payment for your valuable time you've been using to speak with me, but if you truly want to save your grandmother I would consider this offer, but once again it's up to you," he said putting on a pair of dark glasses while adjusting his cufflinks.
" Good Day miss Smith" he said taking up a black jacket and walking out of the diner. Amanda kept thinking about his offer well until she reached home. She looked down at the exquisitely designed card that had a phone number. would she really be willing to do this, to spend a night with a complete stranger.
she's heard of one night stands before, and as always hated the thought of how could two complete strangers hook up. But as she looked at her grandmother's picture on the wall the thought of losing her was to much to bear.
so she swallowed her pride and dialed the number. " Hello have you thought about my offer?" she heard him ask.
Amanda took a deep breath and closed her eyes and gatherd her resolve when she opened her eyes again she knew what she had to say.
"I accept"
