Unexpected encounter

Chapter7__ Luna We are now sitting in the bar of a club having our drinks catching the slow shimmer of lights. The music hums low, like it’s trying to pull me into their waves. And honestly, I can’t tell if it’s alcohol or the company, but I feel lighter, almost too light. Although I can’t afford to get drunk tonight. I’ve got to be sober as I have classes tomorrow morning, and it wouldn’t look good if the professor stumbled in with a hangover. “Do you not have work tomorrow?” I ask Lia, watching her swirl over what must’ve been her fifth drink. “I do,” she says, her voice all steady despite the haze in her eyes. “But that is the least concerning thing for me now: I want to go all night.” I don’t know if I should smile or be concerned, but as my eyes swept around the room, they stumbled upon a figure in the corner surrounded by his friends. I take a double look at that and blink twice to make sure my eyes aren’t playing tricks on me. Sure enough, there he is, leaning back against the velvet booth, drink in hand, eyes as cold as ice even in that light. His friends are loud—too loud, but he barely joins in. Just when I thought he hadn’t noticed me, his gaze snaps my way and stays there for a while. I tried not to back away, holding his stare even though every instinct tells me to. But if I do, he’s going to think he has some power over me, which I can’t let him. But instead of taking his eyes off of me, he smirks at me and raises his drink like a silent toast of celebration. Lia’s voice brings me back to the table. “Who are you staring at?” She looks around the crowd following my gaze. I don’t answer her right away because he’s still watching me, daring to look away. “Oh,” she says, finally spotting him, but before she could say anything, I grab her hand under the table. He finally tears his gaze from me when a blonde slides onto his lap, laughing softly in his ear, clearly asking for his attention. “Teenagers and their hormones,” I mutter under a breath. Lia chuckles, clearly understanding the situation. “These students surely look past their age. Twenty-two and already in clubs, VIP no less. Must be the perks of a rich life, I guess.” Lia scoffs, clearly annoyed at that. “If I get rich someday, I would not want my kids setting foot in a club before thirty.” I had a laugh at that, but again, that does sound like her. “Guess we’ll never know then,” I teased, trying to sip my drink. “Hey, you got to trust me on this, babygirl. I am going to get rich sooner or later and you will come to me with nothing but regrets on your face forever saying such mean things.” With a playful grin, she smacks my arm. After my third drink, I excused myself to the washroom. Lia insisted on coming along, but I said I would be fine alone. After finishing up, I checked myself in the mirror and added extra gloss to my lips. Just as I was about to step out, I bumped into a solid, hard body that had me stumbling back. “ I am so sorry," the guy said, and I could clearly see he was on the phone. “ It’s okay, it was par—-my words died in my throat when he finally lifted his head. For a heartbeat, everything faded, the music, the voices. My stomach twists as I behold the person standing in front of me—tall, muscular, beard grazing his lips and eyes that mirror my shock. Edric Davenport stands before me. At my sight, he hangs up on his phone. All those memories that I buried deep inside came crashing into me. I know I am stronger than this but nothing prepared me for this moment. I can’t let those memories consume me just at his mere sight. My mind was racing, but I managed to pull myself and tried walking past him. “How have you been?” I hear him ask in a voice lighter than a whisper. With my back still at him, “I have been doing well,” I said in a calm tone. I am surprised at my own calmness. I thought seeing him again would make me furious, but instead I was oddly serene and that was my cue to know I had moved past this person. Though I was in denial, not knowing whether to reciprocate the question or not. Finally, I decided not to. I have no intentions of having small talk with a man who once cheated on me and left the scars I still carry. “I must say you look healthier and surprisingly better than I last remembered,” I said, turning around with no trace of emotion on my face. His lips twitched at that. “More like rough, life’s not been the same ever since.” His words surprised me, but I kept my expression neutral. “I guess karma has a sense of humor for people like that,” I said barely in a whispered tone. I stormed off out of the restroom after that. I don’t care if he heard me, or even if he did. I am glad I said it. That was long due. As I rounded the corner at the back of the corridor, I saw another figure standing there, casually leaning. Right I was about to walk past the figure, but the figure blocked my way. When he lifts his eyes, I am met with dark brown eyes. “A professor in a club? Shouldn’t you be busy grading papers instead?” The sheer nerve of this boy to block my way and ask such dumb questions in the middle of the corridor. Does he think he can get away with it? “Last time I checked you are not my headmaster, so keeping you posted is not really my job.” I tried not to grit my teeth as I said those words. “Besides, what are a barely legal group of students doing in a club at this hour? Don’t you have classes tomorrow ?” I crossed my arms, attempting to look composed. His eyes slowly drifted towards my cleavage at that and I immediately dropped my hands. I can see his tongue flicking inside his mouth, a clear sign of how amused he is. “Cute, but maybe try aiming your gaze where it belongs for once—ever hear of that?” I have no idea where this sudden courage and guts is coming from…must be alcohol, thank god. Turns out alcohol has more power than people give credit for. I need to tap on this power again as soon as I get back to the table. “It’s automatic…my eyes always seem drawn to the beautiful things.” He says casually like he’s discussing the weather. I was about to smack him on his head when we heard footsteps approaching us. Kian’s eyes drifted from mine to the figure now standing behind me and I didn’t miss the flicker in his eyes. Next to us now stands Edric Davenport, his eyes boring on my skin like he’s trying to read something between us. “ How do you know each other? ” He asks in his deadliest tone, all that calmness gone replaced by pure anger. Before I was about to open my mouth, Kian stepped out in front of me like he was some sort of living shield. If he thinks he’s my one, then jokes at him.“You have no business knowing how, what, who, when—big brother.” Either I am too high on alcohol or he actually said big brother. Either way, I am losing my mind. I swear he said big brother or was it mothe*******.
