Chapter1
The heavy rain beat down on the sprawling grounds of the Hale estate, casting a misty haze over the forest that surrounded the mansion. Shadows stretched between the towering trees, swallowing the landscape in darkness. Lightning cracked across the sky, briefly illuminating the figure standing just outside the estate gates—a man with piercing eyes and a powerful, predatory stance. Kellan Blackwood had arrived. He pushed through the wrought iron gates, his presence cutting through the storm like a blade. The Hale family, the ones who had taken everything from him, were close. He knew this house held their secrets—and their daughter. A sheltered, fragile girl who didn’t even know what she was. He stepped onto the front porch, the rain dripping off his coat as he raised a hand to knock. But before his knuckles could connect with the door, it creaked open, and he froze. Lyra stood there, clutching the edge of the door with wide, fearful eyes. She looked as if she had seen a ghost, her delicate features caught between uncertainty and curiosity. Her heart was racing, her breath shallow, and she could feel the cold weight of his gaze. She had never seen a stranger here—her world was small, suffocatingly safe, and this man did not belong in it. “Who are you?” Her voice quivered, barely audible above the rain. She took a hesitant step back, as if retreating from the storm that seemed to have followed him inside. Kellan’s eyes narrowed, his jaw tightening. She was exactly as he’d imagined—fragile and innocent. Everything he despised, and yet...there was something else, a flicker of strength buried deep beneath her fear. He forced a smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “My name is Kellan Blackwood,” he said, his voice steady and low. “I’ve come to speak with your father.” Lyra’s brow furrowed, confusion mingling with her unease. “My father isn’t here. He’s—” She hesitated. She had been told never to reveal too much, but something about this man’s intense gaze made her stumble over her words. “He’s away.” “Is that so?” Kellan’s eyes hardened, but he kept his tone casual. “Then I suppose I’ll have to wait.” He stepped forward, invading her space, and Lyra instinctively stepped back, the door swinging wider as she moved. Without waiting for an invitation, he crossed the threshold, the tension between them sharp enough to cut. Lyra’s pulse quickened. “You can’t just—” “Don’t worry, little wolf,” Kellan interrupted, his voice smooth and confident. “I won’t bite...yet.” She froze, her breath catching at the word he used—wolf. He knew. He shouldn’t know. Panic gripped her, but she couldn’t find the strength to throw him out. He seemed to fill the entire room, his presence overwhelming, and she felt a strange, dangerous pull toward him. Something in his eyes told her that this meeting was no accident, and whatever he wanted...he wasn’t leaving without it. A flicker of determination sparked in her. “You need to go,” she said, the words sharper than she expected. “This is private property. You have no right to be here.” Kellan’s smile widened, and he moved closer, so close that she could feel the heat radiating from him. “I have every right,” he said softly. “Your family took something from me. And I intend to get it back.” Lyra’s heart skipped. “What are you talking about?” Before he could answer, a deafening crash shook the house, and the lights flickered. Lyra gasped, stumbling back as the shadows seemed to come alive around them. Kellan’s expression turned deadly serious, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light. “They’re here,” he muttered, and without warning, he grabbed Lyra’s arm, pulling her toward him. His grip was firm, but not painful, and she felt a strange, electric shock where his skin touched hers. “Who’s here?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. Kellan’s gaze was cold and unyielding, but there was a hint of something else—something almost protective—in his expression. “The ones who want you dead.” Another crash echoed through the mansion, closer this time. Lyra’s fear spiked, but Kellan’s hold on her tightened, his body shielding hers from the unseen threat. For the first time in her life, she felt truly vulnerable...and utterly, inexplicably safe. Then, with a swift movement, he pulled her closer, his breath warm against her ear. “Stay with me if you want to live.” Lyra’s mind spun, her world tilting as she looked into his eyes—eyes that held secrets she couldn’t begin to understand. And in that moment, she knew that everything she thought she knew was about to be shattered. The door to the mansion burst open with a deafening bang, and figures moved in the darkness, their intentions clear and deadly. Kellan’s voice was like steel. “Run, Lyra. Run now.” But before she could move, a shadow leapt at them from the doorway, claws gleaming—and the world exploded into chaos.
