They brought the trucks at sunrise June 14th.
My wedding anniversary. Also Rollins' birthday. Also Lena's birthday. Also 30 babies' birthdays from the safe. Also the day Eleanor's mother died in 1972 under concrete.
FBI let us do it because Agent Shaw said, "Victims should get to bury it."
Six trucks. Same white trucks that used to come at night with no lights. Now in daylight, drivers wearing FBI vests, not Eleanor's company shirts.
House One deed was on my kitchen island. Judge signed emergency order: Kevin Williams deed void due to trafficking coercion, transfers to Zuri Williams, House One, 2024, victim restitution.
I was 24 and owned a house that had a bunker under lake with my husband's half-sister's birth certificate in a safe.
Kevin was at Grady, wrist cuffed to bed, but not for long. He confessed everything to get deal: how Eleanor showed up at Morehouse job fair, said free house for married faculty, how he signed page two without reading, how he helped pour Mae because Eleanor said if he didn't, Zuri would be poured first.
He wrote me letter, Priya delivered, from hospital:
_Zuri, you were never size 6 to me. You were House One. My House One. I'm sorry I sold you for countertops. - K_
I didn't forgive him yet. But I kept letter.
9 a.m., June 14th, we all stood at lake.
Me, Priya 2024, Lena 2006/2018, Imani 2025, three desert girls - original Priya 2019 (her real name was Anaya, she told us on plane), Zuri 2020 (real name Amara), and House Two 2021 (real name Grace). Plus Mae, in wheelchair now, neck brace, breathing through tube, but alive, holding Lena's hand. Silver bracelet cleaned.
Rollins, birthday boy, 26 today, standing with his mother Patricia who flew in from Buckhead when she heard lake being poured. Patricia cried when she saw safe with her birth certificate. She hugged Rollins for first time in FBI file photos.
Simone, out on bail with ankle monitor, came too. No one invited her, but she came in black dress, not white, holding shovel.
Eleanor didn't come. Federal holding, no bail. She watched via FBI drone from jail TV. Agent Shaw said she asked for one thing: to see if we poured over her mother properly this time.
First truck poured.
Concrete into black lake.
Lake bubbled. Black water turning gray.
Lena whispered: "House Zero had library. Mae stocked it with books for us. We should have taken books."
Mae, through tube, whispered: "I took one. For Zuri."
She gave me book from wheelchair blanket. Small, water damaged, title: _THE VOW - 1972 - HOW TO HIDE A GIRL_ by E. Vow Mother. First edition. Handwritten inside: _For my daughter Eleanor, so she never has to be pregnant and scared like me. - Mom_
Eleanor's mother wrote guide to save girls, not sell them. Eleanor turned rescue into business.
Second truck poured.
Priya 2024, original Priya 2019 Anaya now, said: "My house, House Three, had a c***k in closet. I thought it was foundation. It was hatch to tunnel to lake. Every house had hatch. All six houses connected to House Zero. That's why electric fence - not to keep us in, to keep people out from finding hatches."
Imani, 17, said: "My scholarship house? Same c***k. They were going to pour me 2025."
Third truck. Lake half gone.
Rollins stepped forward, took off his shoes, like we did that first night barefoot.
"June 14th, 1998, I was born down there," he said. "I lived down there 3 days, then foster, then mom. Today I turn 26. I want to be last June 14th baby from that lake."
He threw his birth certificate into wet concrete.
Lena threw hers.
Anaya threw hers.
One by one, all 30 birth certificates from safe, plus six contracts, plus six Polaroids, plus tiny dresses size 0 - we threw them into lake to be buried.
Not burned. Buried. Proper burial, Eleanor's mother never got.
Fourth truck.
Simone stepped forward, ankle monitor beeping.
"I poured Mae," she said to Mae. "For bonus. $10k. I was going to buy ticket to Mexico."
Mae reached with good hand, touched Simone's hand.
"You were 10k? I was 500k house? We were priced," Mae said through tube, and everyone laughed because it was not funny but true.
Simone threw her g*n, pink Birkin g*n, into concrete. And her daughter track contract: SIMONE - DAUGHTER TRACK - DO NOT SELL. She tore it, threw half in.
"I'm not daughter. I'm House Two. I pour."
Fifth truck. Lake almost gone. Just mud and rebar of House Zero roof showing.
I stepped forward last.
I had my white dress. Size 6. Name tag ZURI - 2024 - EARLY RETURN. I had Kevin's letter. I had House One deed.
I threw dress in. Did not throw deed. Deed I kept.
"I was going to be doll," I said. "June 14th doll in desert. Brushed 100 strokes. But I have afro. Takes 200 strokes. Mrs. Holt would have gotten tired."
Everyone laughed. Even Patricia Rollins.
Sixth truck. Final pour.
Concrete covered everything. Black lake became gray slab. Flat. No water. No bunker. No vault. No House Zero.
Just 40x60 gray rectangle in middle of six houses.
Agent Shaw asked: "What will you build?"
I said: "Park. No swings. Just wall. With names. All names. Real names. Not return tags. And bench for Mae to read."
Lena added: "And library. Real library. With that book Mae saved. So next size 6 girl who gets scared, pregnant, June 14th, has place to hide that is not under lake."
Rollins' mother Patricia, lawyer, said: "I will fund. With Eleanor's seized money. Victims fund."
Simone, ankle monitor, said: "I will manage. Community service, 10 years. Let me."
We looked at Simone. Daughter who poured.
Priya said: "Only if you pour park bench foundation yourself. With good concrete. Not quick."
Simone nodded.
June 14th, 5 p.m., sun hot, concrete drying, we sat on edge of new slab, six houses behind us, empty, waiting for new families who will never be told about bunker, because bunker gone.
Kevin called from hospital, video. He saw slab via my phone.
"Zuri, is it done?" he asked.
I showed him gray slab, then showed him deed with my name only.
"It's done. House One is not a size anymore. It's a park."
He cried.
I hung up.
Rollins brought cake. Grocery store cake. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROLLINS - 26 - JUNE 14TH. With 26 candles. Plus 30 small candles for babies.
We all blew.
Mae, through tube, blew hardest.
