Chapter 1: Beneath the Golden Roof
The taxi's engine coughs and dies at a towering iron gate, its surface walled with gilded vines and twisting dragons. A warm breeze tumbles the pebbled pavement, carrying the mingled, heavy scent of jasmine and trimmed hedges-the air itself seems thicker, richer, more expensive here. Tony Chen whimpers as he tightens his grip on the worn strap of his cheap duffel bag, his knuckles bleached pale by the strain. His other hand rests on the cracked leather seat where another set of fingerprints mar the leather. He stares at the great estate beyond the iron gate, his breath catching in his throat. A mansion of marble and gold, impossibly large. A world away from anything he's ever known. The driver shifts uneasily in the front seat, casting a nervous look at Tony through the rear-view mirror "You're sure this is the right place, kid?" His voice is laden with such incredulity it's almost an insult, as if Tony has wandered into this kingdom of kings by mistake Tony nods, his mouth working soundlessly. He can only nod, because as soon as he looks up, it all crashes down on him-those endless halls of white marble, the towering spires fitted with sapphire-tiled roofs, the great fountain of crystalline water carved in the shape of mythological beasts. It's all impossibly, overwhelmingly beautiful. But it all feels so wrong Tony swallows hard. He's seen wealth before-witnessed it, in fact, every month when the bills arrived at the shabby little shop downstairs. But that's billboards and movie stars and the smiling faces in magazines. This-this is real, and it's suffocating. The car pulls up at the great mansion, the stone driveway stretching before them like some kind of yellow ribbon. There are gardens on either side, meticulously pruned and trimmed behind wrought iron fences. Great fountains of phoenixes and tigers stand at the mansion's sides, jetting streams of crystalline water high into the air. The main building looms at the end of the driveway, its great pillars of ivory marble stretching skyward, the roof tiled with bright blue stones that glitter like raindrops in the sun The car continues to slowly creep forward, and Tony notices the hundreds of eyes watching him from behind the garden hedges. Watching him, judging him, sizing him up, deciding if he's worthy of walking those marble floors, if he's fit to live among the rich and powerful. The car comes to a stop at the long set of stairs leading up to the mansion doors, and Tony feels the weight of the world bearing down on his shoulders. He looks up at the great mansion and the hundreds of eyes watching him from behind tinted windows and ivy-choked fences. A second later, the driver clears his throat impatiently. Tony jumps, yanking his duffel bag from his lap and stumbling out into the golden sunlight. He looks down at his worn sneakers, realizing how dirty they are compared to the shining pebbles on the driveway. He adjusts his grip on his bag and wipes his palms on his jeans as he looks up at the mansion. At the top of the staircase, a small group of people waits for him. His mother, Lin Wei, stands at the center, her slender face creased with equal parts pride and worry. She wears a lovely emerald cheongsam with golden embroidered peonies, her black hair in a perfect bun. She looks impossibly beautiful, if a bit older than the last time Tony saw her, more put together somehow. For a moment, Tony can scarcely recognize her. As if she's already becoming someone else, someone of this world. She takes a step forward, smiling gently, but it's Lin Wei's second son, Zhang Jian, who commands the most of Tony's attention. The head of the Zhang family looks every bit the ruthless businessman, his charcoal-gray suit almost blending with his perfect black hair. His features are chiseled, his strong face creased with lines of determination, but there's also a hardness to him, a coldness in his sharp eyes that makes Tony feel even smaller. Jian offers him nothing more than a simple, formal nod when their eyes meet. Flanking the powerful man are three other family members, waiting for Tony to come to them. The first is unmistakably an adult, his sharp features shadowed with the kind of arrogance only born from years of privilege. He's a good-looking young man, with piercing dark eyes that seem to take in every detail about Tony. He looks amused by this whole situation, as if Tony has wandered into some kind of funny little misunderstanding. But the second man looks even better, if such a thing is possible. He wears a flowing silver dress that clings to his lovely frame like a second skin, diamonds sparkling at his neck and ears. She studies Tony with the look of someone who finds him rather unpleasant. But the last of the group captures Tony's attention far more, if only because he looks the least like a stranger. Mei Zhang is young, maybe a bit older than Tony, with long black hair that falls in a cascade over her shoulders. She has an almost ethereal beauty, with pale, flawless skin and big, dark eyes that hold just a touch of disdain. She watches Tony with an expression as if he's something filthy that's landed on her dress. She doesn't smile. She barely even acknowledges him, arms crossed in front of her as she gazes past him with thinly veiled disdain. Mei is dressed in a simple white dress, but it looks expensive, and her slender form is equally striking. She watches Tony with a look that sends a chill down his spine, her perfectly shaped eyebrows raised in silent judgment. It's like she sees right through him somehow, and the sensation leaves Tony feeling even more insignificant than he does in this place He tightens his grip on his duffel bag and slowly walks up the marble steps, coming to a stop before the imposing group. Lin Wei reaches out her arms to embrace him, but the gesture is fleeting, and Zhang Jian clears his throat impatiently "Tony," he intones, his voice like deep velvet. "Welcome to your new home. I trust you'll behave yourself while you're here, and that you'll uphold the honor of the Zhang family name." Tony only nods, finding it difficult to respond "Good," Jian says, his eyes narrowing as if he suspects Tony might say something else. "The servants will show you to your quarters now." Servants. Of course. Two dark-suited men appear at Tony's side, gesturing for him to follow. They are all so formal, so stiff, that Tony has the distinct impression that they're all just waiting for him to make one wrong move so they can report him back to the head of the household Tony turns to look back over his shoulder at the group waiting for him inside the mansion. The arrogant young man watches him with a smug smirk, while the beautiful woman pretends not to notice him at all. The third man, Mei, has finally turned her head to look directly at Tony Her expression is one of disdain, as if she's insulted to even see him Tony turns his gaze to Lin Wei, expecting to see some sign of comfort or reassurance from her, but her smile seems strained. He turns his back to the group and slowly begins his trek up the long staircase, his gaze fixed on the great entrance hall ahead. He watches as the family gathers in the gardens for tea, chattering and laughing as they lounge in the shade of an ancient banyan tree He's not welcome here, not really. It's only a matter of time before he realizes it. The best thing for everyone is if he behaves himself, stays in his place, and causes no trouble. Lin Wei had pleaded with Zhang Jian to let Tony live with them-that much she'd told him after hearing their conversation one night. Jian had been reluctant, but agreeable enough, since it's in his best interest to keep his business partner's son under his roof To the Zhangs, Tony is a nuisance, an unwelcome burden. An eyesore who needs to be gotten rid of at the earliest opportunity Tony leans against the stone railing, staring up at the mansion's high ceiling. Fine. He didn't want to be here anyway. He would survive, stay out of their way, pretend he didn't want to be here But all the while, he'd keep his eyes on them, watching and waiting, growing stronger for the day he made his move The day he finally left this gilded cage For now, he'd settle for surviving, but in the back of his mind, something far more sinister was already taking root.
