Chapter 1 The Stray Dog
Everyone whispered in awe of my 'perfect' husband, the man every woman coveted, and I basked in the glory of their envy.
But then, that fateful day——
I stumbled upon a web of deceit: my husband's treachery, his covert embezzlement of our assets, and the chilling revelation that he planned to d**g and kill me!
With death looming like a dark shadow, how was I to outwit the very man I'd trusted?

One day, I secretly brought a stray dog home. My husband, Cyrus, was allergic to pet hair, so we'd never had any pets.
I'd always been the envy of my friends. My husband was wealthy, attentive, and made me his priority in everything. Everyone knew I married for love. He treated me well, so I gave up my dream of having pets, quit my job, and became a full-time housewife. I didn't regret any of it.
After we married, we had a child, and I devoted myself to raising them. But over the past year, I'd felt weaker and weaker, like my energy was slowly slipping away.
My husband took me to countless doctors, got me the best medications, and even bought expensive supplements from overseas.
Every night, I took a bottle of the supplement. It was not pleasant, but with his gentle, worried gaze on me, I never said no.
It was almost time for him to come home, so I hid the stray dog carefully. He arrived right on time, and warmed up my supplement as usual. Just as I was drinking it, he stepped outside to take a work call.
I was sick of drinking that supplement, so I decided to dump half of it. I quietly headed to the storage room where I'd hidden the stray dog, planning to pour it somewhere I could get rid of in the morning.
But as I crouched down, the stray dog suddenly lunged at me, making me spill the supplement all over the floor. Thinking it was food, the dog lapped up every last drop. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry as I reached out to move it.
But then, the dog started convulsing. It collapsed, whimpering softly.
Moments later, it stopped breathing.
I was stunned, instinctively reaching to pick up the poor dog. But as soon as I touched it, clumps of its fur began to fall off.
A thick layer of black fur scattered across the floor, sending a chill through me.
It reminded me of my own hair, which had been shedding more and more.
Every morning this past year, my pillow would be covered in strands of hair. It was terrifying.
I always thought my health was to blame. Watching my hair thin out, I became self-conscious and even considered buying wigs and hats. But my husband never seemed to mind; he always said he loved me just the way I was.
Before, those words were comforting. Now... they felt unsettling.
He once said that it was my thick, beautiful hair that made him fall in love with me at first sight.
At that moment, I heard the sliding door—he was coming back. I quickly hid the dog's body and returned to bed, pretending to be asleep, steadying my breath.
After taking the supplement, I usually slept deeply and woke up feeling a little better.
The doorknob turned, and my heart started racing. But instead of the usual warmth I felt when he was near, an uncontrollable chill spread through me, and my hands grew cold.
He came in, gently asking, "Asleep already, honey?"
I didn't answer, my mind still reeling from what had happened in the storage room. I felt a strange urge to test what he did at night after I'd fallen asleep.
When I didn't respond, he kissed me softly on the forehead, a goodnight kiss.
I felt a bit relieved and waited for him to lie down beside me. But he didn't get into bed; instead, he left the room.
I heard his relaxed footsteps and even a quiet humming.
As the door was about to close, I heard him mutter clearly, “What an i***t. Already dying and she doesn’t even know it...”
The rest of his words were muffled as the door closed, but I was frozen in fear, my eyes wide open.
The image of the dead dog and his mocking words played over and over in my mind.
A terrifying realization gripped me.
'Could my husband... be trying to harm me?'
I fought hard to dismiss the thought. It was impossible. He loved me! If I hadn't left my career to support him, he wouldn't have been promoted. I made him who he was, and he loved me for it!
And we had a beautiful child together!
But that bone-deep fear wouldn't go away.
Quietly, I slipped out of bed and made my way to the balcony, where a hidden staircase led downstairs.
I managed the house's layout myself, and I'd covered this staircase left by the previous owner behind a decorative door.
Taking out the key, I unlocked the door and went down barefoot, making no sound.
I reached the first floor and saw him on the phone.
"She's out cold. You could video call me, and she wouldn't know."
Through the thin decorative door, I could hear his voice clearly—and the flirtatious voice of a young woman on the other end.
"When are you going to divorce her already? I told you, I'm not sharing my man with some old woman!"
Her words struck me like a bolt of lightning.
My husband... was having an affair!
