Chapter 1: The Vanishing Bride
Callan Mercer POV My phone rang on the desk at exactly 4:14 AM. In my world, a call at this time never brought good news. It meant a crashed market, a hacked computer system, or, in this case, a disaster that could destroy Mercer Global before sunrise. "Speak," I said, my voice cold and completely serious. "Mr. Mercer, it's Vane," my head of security said through the secure phone line. His voice was tight, filled with panic he was trying to hide. "We have a problem at the Mayfair house. Miss Hallowell's room is locked from the inside, but she isn't inside. She is gone." I didn't blink. I didn't even drop my pen. But my chest tightened into a hard knot. Seven days. Exactly seven days until the board of directors made me the permanent CEO. The main rule of my grandfather's will was very strict: I had to marry Verity Hallowell in a big public wedding to show stability, or the whole company would go to a rival group. Verity knew what was at stake. We had a deal. Business, rules, and survival. People like us didn't just vanish a week before the wedding of the decade. "Find her," I ordered with my teeth clenching. "Check the security cameras, the private airstrip, every contact she has in the financial district. I want her to be found in an hour." "Sir, you need to come down to her room. There is something in her dressing room you need to see." The line went dead. I stood up, threw a dark blazer over my shirt, and walked out of my private study. The mansion was dead silent. My footsteps echoed loudly on the marble floors as I walked to Verity's suite. For months, I told myself this marriage was just a business merger. I felt no warmth toward her, only necessity. But as I reached her door, a rush of adrenaline hit me. If Verity ran away on purpose, she wasn't just messing up my company; she was declaring war. Two guards stood outside her double doors. I walked past them without a word and went inside. The room smelled faintly of her expensive French perfume mixed with the cold air coming from the open balcony. Everything looked clean. Her designer dresses hung in the closet, her diamond earrings sat in a velvet tray, her passport and phone were untouched on the bedside table. She hadn't packed a bag. She hadn't run away like a normal person. She had vanished as if she had disappeared into thin air. I wanted to know every detail of how she managed to leave a locked room. I called my head guard back into the suite to question him directly about the perimeter logs. "Vane," I said, turning away from the bed. "Did any of the motion sensors on the perimeter fence trigger between midnight and four in the morning?" "No, sir," Vane answered, standing near the door with his hands clasped tightly behind his back. "The exterior lasers and cameras recorded nothing. No vehicles left the garage, and the private gate logs are completely clear." "Then she did not walk out the front entrance," I said, keeping my voice level. "Check the secondary access points. Look at the service stairs, the basement delivery tunnel, and the staff quarters." "We already checked those, Mr. Mercer," Vane replied, his face pale under the overhead lights. "The security tapes from the service stairs show zero activity. It is as if she simply ceased to exist inside this building." "Check the digital logs of the smart-home system," I told him, walking over to the wall control panel. "Every door handle in this estate has a biometric sensor. Tell me when her handprint was last scanned." Vane tapped on his tablet for a few seconds. "The last recorded scan for Miss Hallowell was at 11:30 PM last night when she entered her suite for the evening. There are no exit scans recorded after that time." "Someone could have overridden the system," I said. "The master override requires your thumbprint and my security code," Vane replied. "Neither of our codes was used." That meant Verity was either helped by someone with high-level access inside the mansion, or she had planned this escape long before tonight using methods our security team did not know about. I stared at the blank wall, thinking about the upcoming board meeting. If the directors found out my bride was missing, they would vote to strip me of my position by noon. "Expand the search radius," I told Vane. "Check her bank accounts. See if any large sums of money were moved out of her personal accounts over the last month." "I already ran a quick check on her primary accounts before calling you," Vane said. "Her balances are untouched. No large withdrawals, no ticket purchases, no hotel bookings." "People do not vanish without money," I said, narrowing my eyes. "Look for offshore accounts. Look for shell companies linked to her family. Dig deeper." "On it, sir," Vane said, turning quickly toward the hallway to carry out the orders. I watched him leave and locked the door behind him. I needed to search the rest of the room myself. I walked systematically through the suite, opening every drawer and checking every shelf. I found nothing unusual in the bedroom. Then, I turned my attention to the large bathroom attached to the suite. The marble floor was spotless. The oversized bathtub was dry. The sink had no water in it. There were no wet towels, no discarded clothes, and no signs of a struggle. It was cleaner than a hotel room that had just been cleaned by staff. I walked back out into the main bedroom and my eyes darted to the mirror across the room. On top of the glass sat a single crystal glass filled to the top with dark red wine. The liquid was so thick it looked less like wine and more like fresh blood. I walked closer, my boots silent on the carpet. Sitting at the very bottom of the glass, under the red liquid, was her platinum engagement ring. It was smashed into two pieces. This wasn't cold feet. This was a clear, planned message. Before I could grab the broken ring, my computer screen in the corner of the room flashed on. It showed a new file sent from an unknown local computer. My breath caught. I turned away from the mirror and walked slowly toward the glowing screen, my hands clenching into fists. The file opened by itself. There was no greeting. Just a single photo of Verity's empty dressing room taken from a hidden camera above my head and a blinking cursor typing a sentence: She didn't leave because of you, Callan. She left because she found out who killed your father. And you are next.
