Chapter1
~Tiara "Tiara, watch out!" My boyfriend Gerald laughed as I teetered on the edge of the cruise ship, trying to get a better view of the sunset. "You wouldn't want to fall into the ocean on our first night, would you?" I giggled and took a sip of champagne, turning to face him. "Oh please, Gerald. You know I've got the best balance of anyone on this ship. Besides, nothing could dampen my excitement. A Christmas cruise has been on my wishlist for years, and I'm finally living the dream." Gerald smiled and placed his arm around my shoulders, pulling me in for a kiss. "You deserve it, Tiara. You've been working so hard all year. Now it's time to relax and enjoy the good life." I nodded and leaned into his embrace, savoring the moment. "It's true. And I couldn't think of a better way to ring in the Christmas spirit than with the man I love, on a cruise in Los Angeles." "Well, I'm just glad I could help make your wish come true," Gerald said, his eyes twinkling in the fading light. I sighed contentedly, but then a pang of sadness hit me. "I just wish my best friend Sarah was here with us. She's always working, even on the holidays. Sometimes I worry that she works too hard." Gerald laughed and shook his head. "Sarah, the workaholic. What is it this time? Which criminal is she working as an undercover agent to bust? Maybe a jewel thief? Or a drug lord?" I rolled my eyes, but couldn't help but chuckle at his joke. "Very funny, Gerald. But seriously, I do worry about her sometimes. We strolled arm-in-arm off the cruise ship, the city lights of Los Angeles sparkling in the distance. I took a deep breath, savoring the cool night air and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. Suddenly, Gerald's phone rang, interrupting our conversation. He excused himself, stepping a few feet away to answer the call. "Hello? Yes, I'll be there in a few minutes please. I raised an eyebrow, curious about the call. "Who was that, Gerald? Who do you need to pick up?" Gerald gave me a sheepish smile and avoided eye contact. "Oh, just a friend. I won't be long. I'll be back before you know it." I crossed my arms, a suspicion forming in my mind. "A friend? Gerald continued to avoid my gaze. "Yes, just a friend. Look, I promise I won't be gone long. Why don't you go back to the lounge and get some rest? I'll be back before you know it." As Gerald hurried away, I stood there for a moment, feeling lost and alone. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart, and started toward the hotel. As I approached the restaurant door, Suddenly, I felt my dress snag on a nail, nearly sending me tumbling to the ground. "Oh!" I gasped, reaching out to steady myself. That's when I felt a strong hand wrap around my arm, preventing me from falling. I turned to see the most gorgeous man standing there, his concerned gaze fixed on me. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice smooth and deep. "Yes, yes, I'm fine," I replied, struggling to regain my composure. "Thank you for catching me. That was a close one." The man smiled, and my heart skipped a beat. "Glad I was in the right place at the right time. I'd hate to see such a beautiful woman fall." I felt a blush rising to my cheeks, and I laughed nervously. "Well, thank you for the compliment. And for saving me from embarrassment. "Well, I'm glad you're okay," the man replied with a smile. "But it looks like you're headed to the restaurant. Are you as starving as I am?" I nodded, grateful for the change of subject. "Oh, I'm definitely ready for some food. And a drink to take the edge off this evening's events." The man chuckled. "Sounds like we're both in need of some sustenance. How about we grab a table and order something? My treat." I smiled, feeling a bit of my tension melting away. We took our seats at a table and perused the menu, chatting about our day and what brought us to Los Angeles. As we decided on our meals, I caught a glimpse of Gerald entering the restaurant with a woman I recognized as his ex. My heart skipped a beat. I stood up abruptly, nearly knocking over my water glass. "I'm so sorry," I said, feeling a surge of adrenaline course through me. The man at the table looked up at me, a concerned expression on his face. "Is everything okay? "I'm sorry," I repeated, my mind racing. "I just...I need to go. Can we do this another time?" The man nodded, standing up as well. "Of course. If you need to go, I understand." I smiled weakly, feeling like I was in a daze. "Thank you. I'm sorry, I just..." Before I could finish, I turned and hurried out of the restaurant, my eyes fixed on Gerald and his ex. I followed them, keeping a safe distance behind. As I trailed after them, I noticed that they were holding hands, their fingers entwined. My heart sank. I couldn't believe that Gerald was here with his ex, Miranda , openly displaying affection for her. As they walked, Miranda turned to him and asked, "What about Tiara? Won't she be upset if she sees us together like this?" Gerald laughed and shook his head. "Tiara? She's probably asleep in the lounge. She loves her sleep, that one. Miranda laughed as well, a glint in her eye. "Oh, Gerald. You're terrible. What if she catches us?" Gerald shrugged, a mischievous grin on his face. "Then we'll just have to tell her that she should have stayed awake. Besides, she knows I still care about you." My stomach churned at their exchange, and I felt like I was about to be sick. But I couldn't look away as Miranda leaned in and took Gerald's hand, leading him into a secluded corner. Miranda pressed her body against his, and Gerald's arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer. Their lips met in a passionate kiss, their hands roaming over each other's bodies. I stood frozen in place, my heart pounding. Without a second thought, I turned and ran, tears streaming down my face. I barely registered the path I was taking, running blindly until I found myself at the beach, the soft sand cushioning my footsteps. I stumbled to a nearby bench and collapsed onto it, my body wracked with sobs. I buried my face in my hands, feeling completely alone and betrayed. Suddenly, I heard a voice behind me. "Well, well, if it isn't the heartbroken heroine sitting under the moonlight." I looked up, startled, to see the man from the restaurant standing in front of me, a lopsided grin on his face. "I didn't mean to sneak up on you," he said, sitting down beside me. "I just thought you might need some company." I sniffled, wiping my eyes with the back of my hand. "What are you doing here?" I asked, my voice shaking. The man shrugged. "I followed you. I wanted to make sure you were okay." I laughed bitterly. "Well, you can see I'm not. "Ah, but the night's still young," the man said, his voice soothing. "There's plenty of time for things to turn around." I shook my head, fresh tears welling up in my eyes. "I don't think so. My boyfriend was cheating on me with his ex. And they seemed pretty happy about it." The man nodded, his expression turning sympathetic. "That's tough. But you know, maybe it was for the best. "How can you say that?" I asked, looking up at him in disbelief. "How could this possibly be for the best?" The man smiled. "Well, maybe it's a blessing in disguise. After all, now you're free to find someone who will truly appreciate you, who will treat you with the respect and love that you deserve." I sniffled again, considering his words. "Maybe you're right. The man leaned in closer, a mischievous twinkle in his eye. "And what if I was that man?" he asked, his voice low and husky. My breath caught in my throat as I gazed into his eyes, their ocean blue depths flecked with golden flecks. He was even more handsome up close, with his strong jaw and disheveled dark hair. "I...I don't know what to say," I stammered, suddenly feeling flustered. I stood up, eager to get away from the situation. "I need to get back to my room. I have an early flight back to Spain tomorrow," I said, turning to leave. But the man stood up as well, his eyes still fixed on mine. "I'm flying out tomorrow too," he said, stepping toward me. "Maybe I could walk you back to your room?" I hesitated, unsure of how to respond. I felt a strange mix of attraction and discomfort in his presence. "I think I can manage on my own," I said, turning away from him. As I turned away, my phone slipped out of my hand and clattered onto the sand. I stooped to pick it up, but before I could reach it, the man had already bent down to retrieve it. Our hands brushed as he handed me the phone, and I felt a jolt of electricity pass between us. I met his gaze, and a wave of heat rushed through my body. "Thank you," I whispered, my voice barely audible. He nodded, his eyes intense and unwavering. "Anytime." I let him walk me back to my room, his presence a warm comfort in the cool night air. We visited a few places together, as we chatted, and when we reached my door, I turned to face him, the chemistry between us still palpable. "Thank you," I said, a small smile playing on my lips. "Despite the night's events, you've managed to make it a bit better." The man grinned back at me, his eyes dancing with mischief. "Anything for a damsel in distress," he replied. As he turned to leave, his eyes caught on the mistletoe that was hanging from the door frame. "Well, well, look at that," he said, raising an eyebrow. "You know what they say about mistletoe, don't you?" I blushed, my heart racing. "What do you mean?" I asked, trying to play it off. He moved closer, his voice low and teasing. "Well, it's tradition that if two people are caught under the mistletoe, they're supposed to kiss." I swallowed, feeling a mix of embarrassment and anticipation. "Is that so?" He stepped even closer, until there was barely any space between us. His breath was warm against my cheek as he whispered, "It is. And it would be a shame to waste such a perfect opportunity." I could feel the heat radiating from his body, and my pulse quickened. "So," he said, a playful smile on his lips. "What do you say?" I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what I was about to do. "I say," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "I say we make the most of it." He grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "That's my girl," he said, leaning in and pressing his lips to mine. Our kiss was soft and gentle at first, a slow exploration of each other's mouths. But it quickly grew in intensity, the passion between us igniting like a wildfire. His hands found the small of my back, drawing me closer, while mine tangled in his hair. The world around us melted away, leaving only the heat of our bodies and the sound of our breathing. When we finally broke apart, I was breathless and dazed, my heart racing like a freight train. "Wow," he said, his voice husky and low. "That was...something." The man smiled, a hint of wistfulness in his expression. "Goodnight, Tiara. And thank you for a memorable evening." As he turned to leave, I called out to him, "Wait! You never told me your name." He paused, turning back to face me with a mischievous glint in his eye. "And maybe that's for the best. Let's leave it to fate to decide if we meet again. If we do, we'll exchange names. And maybe, just maybe, we'll have a chance at something real." I watched him walk away, his silhouette fading into the darkness. As he disappeared from sight, I couldn't help but feel a sense of loss, even though I had only known him for a few hours . I turned back to my hotel room door, a smile playing on my lips. "Goodnight, stranger," I whispered, stepping inside. "And thank you for the kiss under the mistletoe."
