CHAPTER 32 I ran at Gaines with my staff raised, ready to beat his brain out of his head. I was prepared only to stop when matter oozed out of his ears. Gaines waved off his men with a back sweep of his hand, a silent signal I was his, and no one should interfere. “Get him, Gaines!” It was on, and adrenaline surged throughout my veins like fire. I feinted a blow at the top of Gaines head. He raised his sword, intent on deflecting the blow. I spun around, dropped low, and swung the staff with both hands. I put my back and shoulders into the swing. The staff slammed across Gaines’ stomach. He doubled over, but I was stuck. He’d trapped my staff with his body.
