Chapter 1: The Spark
This novel is a fictional, created story with no relation to actual persons, places or events. Summer was Christian's favourite season of the year. He can't explain why, but it's just the optimistic feeling it gave him -- like he could achieve almost anything! He recently moved with his family to the South side of town when after getting admitted to study in the university of Barkley; one of the most prestigious institutions in the State. To be more honest than boastful, Christian never had to face any form of hardship in his life right from childhood - infact, everything he ever wished for or wanted was handed over to him by his parents. 'A car, a pet dog, money' -- you name it and they'll make provision for it. So you see! He never lacked a thing but yet, felt incomplete and was still lacking of one thing; a girlfriend! Which he was so unlucky at getting. Christian needed someone that will love him and not for what he has. He thought having money will make finding love easier for him but was totally wrong -- it made it even more difficult because every girl who came at him was after his money and nothing else! "Christian!... C'mon, you'll be late on your first day" His mom called out loudly as she stood in the hallway close to his bedroom. "Just a minute Mom" Christian called back in a loud hasty voice as he struggled to put his textbooks into my bag which was lying on the king-sized bed. 'urrgh... You know what, forget this!' Christian groaned under his breath in frustration when he noticed that he wasn't having any luck in putting the textbooks into the bag - seeing that it was a bit larger in size than the mini bag he decided on taking. So he carried the books in his left hand and dashed out of the room - slamming the door carelessly behind him and jogged hastily down the hallway; almost bumping in on his mom who was quick to step out of the way on sighting me. "Hey hey... Sweetheart are you going to hold that in your hand -- what happened to your bag?" His mom asked inquisitively while giving him an unsatisfied look. She was dressed in a pink costly gown that outlined her mature looks. For a lady in her 40's - she has been able to carve a name for herself as one - amongst the most influential women in the state; married to Christian's dad who was a business tycoon and magnate of his time. Her marriage to him brought so much benefits in upgrading her status quo in the society. Christian's dad went into business at a very tender age in his early 20's - even before marrying his wife and was able to accumulate the wealth over the past years -- the very money Christian's mom takes pride and joy in spoiling on her lavish excesses. "Trust me... You don't want to know mom. But I'll drop off my books in the school's locker as soon as I get there" He concluded calmly with a heaving sigh before opening his right palm in front of his mom who was staring blankly with a confused expression on her face. "What?!" She exclaimed rhetorically in a confused tone. "Mom... The car keys. I'm running late" Christian heaved bluntly in a hasty voice as he stood, wiggling his legs in impatience. "No way mummy is going to let you drive to school on your first day..." She retorted, clenching the car keys in her hand before folding her arms at her son in a protesting manner. "Mom!" Christian growled under clenched teeth, placing his left hand on hid waist in a questioning pose. He wished his mom knew how he was feeling now! The change of environment, new school -- being in a place where you have zero friends was just to much for Christian to take in, giving him the mixed feelings of nervousness and excitement at the same time. "C'mon Darling... What is he?... 12!" His dad's chuckling voice sounded behind him as he approached - holding a fancy tea mug and was neatly dressed for one of his business trips. "Morning dad" Christian greeted with a brief smile on my face as he came to stand beside them. His dad was just 56 years of age - but judging by his looks and huge stature, one can be mislead to think that he was in his mid 40's. "Darling... He can drive himself to school without our help ay.. he's not a kid anymore. Don't forget he just turned 24 last week" His dad said - chuckling in amusement while staring at his wife who was trying to loosen her dominating stance. Christian nodded his head in agreement after his father's response before turning to face his mom who was now giving him a searching stare - as if trying to run a maturity test on her son. Heaven knew she was a true drama queen. "You see!... Am with dad mom. And besides, why would he buy me the car as a birthday gift when I can't even drive it myself?" Christian asked in polite tone, swaying his left hand demonstratively in the air before giving a light shrug of his shoulders. "Except you want other fresher's at the school to laugh at me once you drop me off" He concluded lowly in a pampering tone before lowering his head down with his gaze fixed on her leather heel shoes in a bid to evoke her empathy. Then Christian noticed his mother's left foot tapping impatiently for a brief second on the floor before her voice finally broke out. "Okay fine!... Here's the car key. Happy now?" she blurted in a surrendering tone with her right arm stretched towards him with the key dangling in her hand. So he lifted his head quickly - collecting the key from her hand with a wide grin on his face. "That's why I love you mom.." Christian teased - leaning forward to give her a brief peck on her left cheek. "Just drive safely, and keep your phone on just in case I want to call or something goes wrong" she said to him with her voice slightly raised in a cautioning tone before folding her arms again as she stood to watch her son retreat his steps. Christian could tell that his mom wasn't too pleased seeing him go without her accompanying him. But for all he knew, it was worth it -- going without his mom was a sign of maturity for Christian who has always longed for a day like this after so many years of having being attached to his mom for her pampering care as the only child! "Nothing will go wrong Mom... Love you... Bye dad" Christian chuckled heartily as he waved them goodbye while retreating his steps with his eyes still fixed on them. Then he noticed his mom roll her eyes at his dad in a manner that seemed somewhat playful to him. "Oh.. c'mon babe. Seriously... Are you going to do this now?" His dad exclaimed with a loud laugh while spreading his arms out before following behind his mom as she walked back to the masters bedroom down the large corridor. 'Gracious God!... Even at this age they're still acting like youngsters' Christian muttered amusingly to himself and shook his head slowly before turning to leave for school. ***** Christian Mercedes Benz roared smoothly with a rumbling bass sound as he arrived Berkeley high - parking his car in the university's parking garage. Coming out of the car, Christian could notice some students turning their heads to look at him, but he wasn't bothered or shy as he was used to this kind of life. In his previous school, Christian used to have lots -- I mean lots of attention from his peers; especially when his mom comes ostentatiously dressed to pick him up on an expensive ride. 'Well, my first day at Berkeley' Christian inhaled deeply and slammed his car door shut - locking it behind him before hastening his pace into the school building while ignoring all the spectating gazes from various students along the way. Christian was about taking the next bending to his right in the hallway when he instantly bumped into another student - a girl! Well, actually he couldn't say for sure because her dress code wasn't all that girly -- more like a tomboy to him. But she was in no doubt beautiful and chocolate skinned; one of the bodily features that caught his attention - making him a bit nervous and clumsy. "Oh... Am sorry!" Christian said with his voice in short pants before lowering myself to pick up the textbooks which fell from his hands and crashed carelessly on the floor. "Hey, watch where you're going!... Mtcheew" The tomboy student growled rudely at Christian with a hiss that suggested her irritation. Christian's whole body froze on hearing her response. No sorry - nothing! She didn't even offer to help him pick up his books which laid scattered on the floor. "I said am sorry!" Christian groaned in annoyance as he responded - raising his angry face up at the girl who stood in front while his hands worked their way in gathering the books. Then he lifted himself to a standing position and noticed that she was looking back at me with a frown on her face. At this point, Christian felt like responding, to pour out his frustration on her but couldn't since he was new here. And if he wanted to make a good impression as new comer, then he needed to play it cool. So Christian stood, staring back at her furious gaze when her friend who was walking with her began pulling her gently by the left arm. "C'mon Vivian... Cut the new guy some slack. You're scaring the hell out of him" her friend said calmly with a teasing smile that brought out a smirk on Vivian's face before she moved past Christian - causing his stance to stagger as their shoulders brushed. 'Vivian... What a sweet name for a strange girl' This thought echoed in Christian's mind as he adjusted his stance and leveled his gaze on her friend who was still standing in front him. "Hi, sorry about my friend, she can be a bit blunt sometimes. My name is Tessy." The girl said courteously and extended her right hand for a handshake. "Nice meeting you... My name is Christian" He replied curtly, forcing a warm smile on his face as he shook her by the hand. "Sorry... My friend Viv..." "Hey Tess!... You coming or not?!" Vivian's loud voice sounded behind Christian as she called out to her friend. Her voice sent goosebumps running all over Christian's skin; not that it sounded odd or something - no! It's just the commanding tone she used, it could make anyone bend to her will! "Yaah.. am coming" her friend replied immediately in a loud hasty voice before returning her gaze back at Christian - wearing a wide grin on her face. "Welcome to Berkeley Christian" She added before jogging off to meet Vivian who had already started walking away. "Yeah... Thanks" Christian mumbled inaudibly to himself after Tessy left before turning to look at them at a distance with so many questions clouding his head like - was Vivian some kind of bully and was she dating Tessy or they were just best friends?! There was also something unique and captivating about Vivian that Christian noticed during their brief encounter and could get out of his mind -- her sexy physique! Even with the short baggy jean, milky polo shirt and snickers she wore, He still found her attractive - except for her attitude which was quite repelling. She was pretty, with her smooth chocolate skin which had a glossy feel. Her lips were finely carved with her hair plaited to match her heart shaped face. From their close range earlier, Christian realised she was about his height which he found to be very attractive because he was about 5.8ft tall. But all these won't matter to him because he swore never to cross paths with her in this school or outside the school. Then Christian shook his head - waving off the humiliating scenario that had just taken place before walking purposefully to locate his locker across the hallway - just in time before the lecture bell rang...
