The Anchor Drops
The tray hit the marble and shattered into roughly a dozen pieces.
A crimson stream of wine and the white sleeve of Elias Thorne. Two hundred guests looked up.
Be careful Anchor told Dorian Vale. Try to keep your foot in view at all times. You're already overweight.
The ballroom echoed with Adams' laughter.
He knelt backwards and tried to catch the glass mid fall with trembling hands. He sliced his thumb open on the sharp edges of the glass.
"Sorry" he apologised to the lady he turned to. She moved her feet slightly away from him.
He made to stand but Dorian placed his foot on the polish and pushed him back down.
You can leave it. It looks good on you.
Seraphine Vale placed her glass down harshly in the far corner causing the finger holder to break. She was fuming. "I'm going to smash that board member in the flashy grey suit!" she shouted at the table.
Not now Miss Vale.
Technicians.
"Listen" he whispered.
"You've got until Friday to get rid of him, or the directors will try to remove you as CEO. Ashcroft is willing to buy your stock."
She frowned. "You spoke to Ashcroft.
Specifically. The only person who hasn't seen it. He pointed to the wine covered figure of Elias. "Its him."
Seraphine looked at Elias who quickly looked away. He lowered his head. Pinching the glass between his fingers and pressing it to the floor with his bleeding hand.
Her fingers curled into fists.
Secondly the chandeliers flickered.
One. Two. Lights throughout the ballroom went out suddenly. When they returned they were dull and yellow. Like fireflies in jars. The floor trembled. A scream of pain. A female voice. The glass you shattered also trembled and fell.
Elias sliced the glass. His hand smacked against his chest.
The glass was smashing. It felt like it was holding him in his chest. A pounding of smothering fantasy. A soft boot dragging the life from him. Cold crept down his arms. His knees locked and he collapsed onto the glass.
Elias!!
Seraphine was running. Her heels slipped on the wet floor but she didn't stop. She sprinted down to him and grabbed his shoulders.
"Stop it. Vendo me. Vendo me!"
He couldn't focus.
Grey lips.
"Go back to your guests."
No.
Seraphine.
"I'm trying to say no" she lowered his head onto her lap. "Just breathe. I'm here."
The room was in chaos. The guests ran for the door. Dorian yelled at the guards. No-one paid any attention to the couple on the floor.
Elias tried to inhale towards her.
We began to breathe slowly and calmly.
He could feel his heartbeat beneath her fingertips. The chandeliers flickered. She looked up. Down at him. Her frown deepened.
Misser. Ly she reassured.
Yes." Elias shut his eyes. "That's it.
In the furthest left corner on the opposite side of the hall stood a man in a long black coat. He was still. Not paying any attention to the lights. Just staring at Elias. Holding the chandeliers steady he gently tapped the glass and smiled.
Elias noticed. I felt sick.
"Miss Vale the grid is stable. We have no idea why."
Okay. Go. She wrapped her hand round Elias. "I'm taking my husband upstairs."
"Con Brio is lying to the board..."
"The bourd can wait."
Dorian walked past her. "You taking him? Look at you, he can't even sit up."
I'll testify for him. She lifted him into a kneeling position. Supporting most of his weight. "Not another word about my husband tonight Dorian."
Dorian opened his mouth then shut it. He leaned back.
They arrived at the private lift. She placed her palm on the scanner. The doors closed leaving them in silence.
Elias sat against the wall. She was close by. Just a hands width away. Her shoes nearly touching his. She placed one palm flat on his chest.
"Do you lot have Odi's?" she asked. 'No mention of wine'.
"No.
Currently."
Crowded where I'm not good at. You know how it is.
"I can tell you're not telling me the truth." She softened. "Three years on paper but I don't know what's wrong. But when you fell I thought I was falling too. How was that?"
Silence. He looked at her hand on his chest then at her.
"You're signing the papers" he said softly. "The board are right."
" Screw the board." She stepped back and wiped her wrist over her eyes. "Bed. Call a doctor."
Possibly there aren't enough doctors meaning any doctor is possible.
"Why not"
Already.
She looked at him for a moment then nodded. "Okay. But you're staying in my room tonight. I don't trust you alone."
Seraphine. 1. Noun. A personal name. Popular with Christians and Muslims. For example Serafina (Christian O'Reilly) and Deyseraphine (David Whitwell). It can also be a surname. History. Used as a personal name since approximately 1500. Personal name.
Not a question.
The doors of the elevator opened on the 60 th floor. Elias collapsed onto the bench in the hallway. Somewhere down the hallway a guard shouted to Seraphine. She gave him the bird.
"Doesn't change where we are."
He held his breath waiting for her footsteps to fade. As soon as they did he raised his right hand.
Skin like a silk sheet of gold. Trembling on his palm towards his wrist. His signs flickered with the city.
His watch vibrated. There was a indication on the screen.
"Heartglass dying. They know. Looking for you."
A second line appeared.
"Ashcroft is the drone that found you. Go."
Elias curled his hand into a fist. He pushed himself up onto his feet and lurched towards the stairs.
The author who gets most of the notes from the pages is And Elias. We can clearly see the author wants to get notes from all the pages in his 3 volume work. This is a characteristic and undeniable feature of ELias's book.
Ten paces away Seraphine. Sam held his phone which was no
w dead. His eyes were fixated on the flickering golden light between his flanged fingers.
"Open your hand." She said calmly. "Now would you”
