Chapter 2: The Cracks in Reality
Days had blurred together since Ardyn’s encounter in the forest, yet they couldn’t shake the unsettling sensations coursing through their veins. The shard had done something to them—its energy now pulsed within, a constant reminder of the otherworldly power that had fused with their very soul. Each day, strange things appeared at the corners of their vision: fractures in the air, like cracks in a mirror, revealing fleeting glimpses of another world. A world that seemed to bleed into their own. Ardyn tried to push it aside, returning to the worn paths of Ilstrade, scavenging and staying invisible, as they always had. But normalcy was an illusion now. The fractures in reality were becoming more frequent, seeping into the familiar streets they once knew. One evening, while navigating the empty stalls of the abandoned market, the air itself seemed to ripple. A tear appeared, a jagged slit in the fabric of reality. From the opening crawled a creature, its form grotesque, claws extended, eyes glowing like burning embers—the same kind of creature Ardyn had seen in the forest. Fear seized them. Heart hammering, Ardyn backed away, but the creature was faster. It lunged, claws aimed for their chest. Ardyn flinched, expecting to feel the sting of death—but instead, there was a flash of silver. The creature screamed as a blade cut through its shadowy form, and in a cloud of smoke, it disintegrated. A figure stood over Ardyn, tall and imposing, her silver hair gleaming in the moonlight. She held a sword, its edges still sparking with magic, the air humming around her. “You’re not safe here,” the woman said, her voice calm, yet carrying a weight of urgency. “You’ve seen the cracks, haven’t you?” Ardyn blinked, disoriented. “Who… who are you?” “I’m Liora,” she replied, sliding the sword back into its sheath with a practiced ease. “And you’ve opened a door that should never have been opened. We need to leave—now—before more of them come.” Ardyn’s breath came in shallow gasps. They glanced around, the market eerily still, but only for a moment. The air flickered again, and more creatures began slipping through the fractures, their red eyes gleaming like predatory stars in the growing darkness. Liora didn’t wait for an answer. She seized Ardyn’s arm, pulling them into the maze of narrow streets. They ran, the city flashing by in a blur of broken walls and crumbling structures. It felt as if hours passed before they finally stopped, the oppressive weight of Ilstrade left behind. Ahead, the dark treeline of the forest loomed once more, a familiar but unsettling sight. “Where are we going?” Ardyn gasped, their legs burning, heart racing with both fear and confusion. “Virelia,” Liora answered, her eyes scanning the shadows beyond the trees. “It’s the only place where you’ll be safe. The only place where you can understand what’s happening to you.” Ardyn stopped, pulling their arm free. “What do you mean? What’s happening to me?” Liora turned to face them, her expression softening ever so slightly. “You’ve touched something ancient—something that was never meant to be found. The creatures hunting you aren’t after you. They’re after the power you now carry.” Ardyn’s heart lurched in their chest. “Power? What power?” Liora stepped closer, her gaze unwavering. “You’re more than you realize, Ardyn. But if we stay here, you won’t live long enough to find out what that means.” Before Ardyn could respond, the air shifted once more—a ripple of cold, unnatural energy washed over them. More creatures were coming, their presence a whisper on the wind. Liora’s hand tightened on her sword hilt, her eyes locked on the distant treeline. “We don’t have time for questions,” she said firmly. “You can stay and fight them, or you can come with me and survive.” Torn between fear and the gnawing curiosity of what they had become, Ardyn glanced one last time at the city of Ilstrade, now nothing more than a decaying ghost in the distance. With a deep breath, they followed Liora into the forest, leaving behind everything they had known for a future they couldn’t yet understand.
