Chapter 5: Secrets

685 Words
I still woke up at seven in the morning feeling energized. I jumped up out of bed and ran to the shower before anyone else could. When I was finished, I was going to pull on joggers again until the door knocked. I opened it to see Lydia standing there. “You wanna come practice?” Lydia had been teaching me self defense and how to fight for a year now. We kept it secret, as Markus and mom would flip out if they knew. Slowly I had gotten really good at it, still not as great as the others but enough that I could protect myself enough to get away from danger, besides, my strong point was guns and no, Lydia did not know about this. We were halfway through training when Mason of all creatures came across us. I jumped up fast and babbled, “what are you doing here!” I looked around him to see if anyone else was with him, but it looked like he was alone. “I like walking in the woods, it’s peaceful.” He looked at me then and narrowed his eyes suspiciously, “why, have I just caught you out doing something you shouldn’t be?” My heart stopped beating for a moment until I saw the mischief in his eyes and realized he was messing with me, he wouldn’t tell anyone. I slapped his shoulder playfully and for peace of mind, had to ask anyway. “You won’t tell anyone, will you?” He gave a small smile and answered, “I won’t tell anyone.” I breathed a sigh of relief and lost my breath when I was body slammed to the floor. I turned onto my back to see Lydia straddling me, and with every ounce of strength I had I tried the maneuver she had taught me to get out of such a position. Unfortunately, it wasn’t like the movies and I absolutely could not do it, so I did the next best thing and huffing I sulked like a sullen child and flopped my hands onto the floor in defeat. Did I get sympathy? No, I got the both of them laughing at me hysterically, which made me even more mad, which then made them laugh even harder, it just wasn’t my day today. Lydia could see the mood I was in wasn’t budging anytime soon, so she called it quits and we got up to leave. Mason came up next to me and ruffled my hair playfully. Clearly he wasn’t used to curly hair because his hand got tangled up in it and I yelped when he pulled it away. “Sorry, and hey cheer up. It took me years before I became good at combat in the forces, you’ll pick it up soon enough.” I let him walk ahead of me and then fired myself up and ran up behind him as fast as I could and jumping in the air I wrapped one arm around his shoulder and used the weight against his neck and threw myself forward. He crashed to the floor hard, and I landed on my a*s beside him feeling a bit sore but otherwise very satisfied and happy with myself. It was funny seeing him sprawled out on the floor as so far I’d only ever seen him all serious and lethal looking, right now, he looked like a broken puppy and I liked it. “What the f**k was that!” He slowly got to his feet and glared at me. “That was a cheat and cowardly move, and you’re going to pay for that.” I gulped painfully, I hadn’t thought of what might happen afterward. I went to move toward Lydia, but she shook her head with her hands raised and said, “don’t even think about it missy, you’re on your own.” I turned and bolted it down the path as fast as my legs could carry me, and I didn’t stop until I got home and raced up to my bedroom and locked the door.
