Chapter 21: He loves me he loves me not

1744 Words
Mason and Lydia went and stood off to the side while the rest of us lay down in the middle of the floor surrounded by the trees and forest. The moon shined down on us brightly, and I could feel the moon goddess close to earth, I smoothed my hands along the dirt and grass and felt Mother Nature too. We were all spread out so that we weren’t in one another’s personal space, and then we began to pray, Markus was the only one on his knees, as alpha he needed to be the one to lead the prayer. In unison, we prayed, “moon goddess, huntress of the night, mother of wolves, we ask that you bless us with your gift of insight to show us our true mate, with thanks we offer you our blood in return. Blessed be.” Everyone made a small cut on the palm of their hand and let it drip into the earth as an offering, and then we waited patiently. It was quiet for a while and then the ground below began to glow softly, golden veins spread out like spider webs, mine ran along past the other wolves lying down and kept spreading along until it stopped at Masons feet, holy crap! Mason was clearly one of those rare wolves that had more than one mate chosen because next to my line was another, I followed that line and saw it led back to Ruby. Great. I had no chance any way but with Ruby, I was even more doomed, she was beautiful with long thick honey blonde hair that ran down to her waist, her skin was Snow-White perfect and flawless, making her red full lips stand out more and her ice blue eyes, she was around five eleven in height with a lean and tiny figure, but big breasts like me and a perfectly rounded a*s, yep, I may as well crush any hopes I had of Mason being mine. Mason hadn’t been part of the ritual, but because he was close by, the ritual had been able to find him and show us our true mate, one of us at least, I had no clue which of us was his true mate and who was just the next best thing. When the moon goddess called you out to one another you could not refuse her, to do so was a sign of great disrespect and there had been tales of people being cursed to be trapped in their wolf form for the remainder of their life for doing so. The goddess was benevolent and kind, but she could also be ruthless and harsh. Mason looked seriously pissed off when he saw the golden lines at his feet. “No way, I didn’t want to be part of this ritual.” Markus went over to him as I slowly sat up and got onto my feet. “Mason, you have been revealed as their potential mate and them yours, you cannot disrespect the goddess’s kindness for showing you this.” “f**k that, I don’t want either of them. I don’t want a mate.” “Just get to know them, spend time with them and date them, nothing serious has to happen right away.” Mason shook his head and Markus turned into alpha mode, I wasn’t sure how well that would work as Mason was an alpha wolf too. “You will date them both until you figure out who is your true mate, no more discussion about it.” I didn’t know why it bothered Mason so much, I suppose the whole being forced and an arranged mating wasn’t exactly a nice feeling, especially when he hadn’t even been a part of the ritual. He lost his s**t. “No f*****g way!” When Markus stated it was happening, and he would have to take turns spending the night in our rooms as well, Mason smashed his fist into the tree nearby. Even I was shocked Markus had said about sharing a room with me when he was usually so overprotective, but he did take the whole moon goddess and her curse very seriously, I guess he didn’t want to risk her wrath. She could be a fickle one, our goddess. “f**k this s**t, I want no part of the whole weird f*****g mating crap, I don’t want a mate and I sure as hell don’t want your omega daughter!” Everyone went silent and stared at Mason, me included. So I was right in feeling like he had only said those things about not feeling any differently about me being an omega, it really hurt, and I couldn’t even pretend to be in a jovial or playful mood. Mason stormed off after those words, and I was left there wondering what I’d done to be so unlucky to be cursed with being an omega, did the goddess hate me that much, to then be doubled with the awful bad luck of being mated to someone who would never want me? I got up and ran off, I couldn’t bear anyone staring at me any longer, I ran out of the forest and didn’t stop until I got home and locked myself in my room. I cried heart-wrenching sobs, my heart literally felt like it wanted to tear into pieces, my stomach hurt from the deep heaving sobs and my throat grew sore, at some point I passed out from exhaustion. Markus came into my room not too long after and sat on the edge of my bed. I hid my face in the pillows, and he gently put a hand on my back. “Hazel, look at me.” “No!” He sighed and then pulled me into a sitting position, so I had no choice but to face him. “Why did you get so upset, I’ve never seen you like that before.” I shrugged and mumbled, “everyone was staring at me, it was humiliating to hear a potential mate say loud and clear for all to hear that he doesn’t want a pathetic omega for a mate.” Markus looked down at the floor quietly for a moment and then said, “it wasn’t nice, I agree, but I don’t think Mason meant for everyone to hear, and I don’t think he really meant it, the alpha in him felt attacked and forced into a situation he didn’t choose, us alphas don’t take too kindly to being told what to do.” “He isn’t alpha of the pack though, he’s second in command so still has to follow the alphas rule and he seems fine with that.” Markus gave me a gentle smile and nodded, “yes, but I think being given some orders or jobs to do is a little different from having your love life decided for you, it’s basically like an arranged marriage, surely you can see it from his point of view?” I nodded and sniffled and then answered, “I can, but if it’s his true mate, why isn’t he happy?” Markus shrugged and answered, “there’s many reasons as to why, maybe he has had a bad experience in the past, maybe he likes being single, and you’re also still a stranger to him really, just because your true mate is revealed it doesn’t just make you instantly fall in love, you still have to get to know them, grow close to them and fall in love the natural way.” “So if you don’t want your true mate, you can just choose to never be with them?” Markus nodded, “of course, if some random stranger in the street was pointed out, and you were told they are your true mate, would you go and run into their arms lovingly?” I laughed a little at that and shook my head, but then asked, “but aren’t we forced to be with our mate because if we don’t the moon goddess will curse us?” “It’s just a story most likely, but I don’t ever want to take risks with you, so I will enforce the rule that he gets to know you romantically, and he can decide from there who he feels more connected to. If you find your mate naturally, it doesn’t matter, you can choose to do with that whatever you like, but when you ask the moon goddess during a ritual to leave whatever she may be doing to come and take the time and use her powers to show you your true mate, and then you decide to ignore it, well, you can understand why a powerful moon goddess like herself may be angered with such disrespect.” “So you’re going to force Mason even if you don’t know if the rumors about the curse are true?” “Hazel, I will not take any chances when it comes to you, so yes, even if I detest the idea of any male being near you romantically, I will respect the moon goddess’ choice that Mason is the right one for you.” He looked at me then and said more softly, “it wasn’t just everybody looking at you that made you run was it, I get the feeling you like Mason more than just as a friend.” I blushed hard and looked away and quickly answered, “no.” He laughed and kissed the top of my head. “You’re a terrible liar, mom already told me anyway.” I pushed him hard, but that only made him laugh more. “I’m shocked you want Mason sharing a bed with me.” That stopped his laughter. “I don’t want any loopholes he will try to find, like having a five-minute date and then escaping, forcing him to share a bed is only so he is forced to be in close contact, forcing him to have to communicate and not ignore the situation, besides, I figured it will help break down the walls having him cuddled up and close, and I mean cuddled up nothing else, I absolutely do not mean anything s****l, and I feel pretty confident with his reaction that I won’t have to worry about that side of things.” I rolled my eyes at him, and he ruffled my hair playfully before getting up to leave.
