Chapter 12: The talk

2425 Words
We walked around for a few hours trying to smell any hint of vampire in the air, but there was nothing. We trailed around the edge of town and further and still never picked up any sign of a vampire nest nearby. They were clever and knew how to cover their tracks from werewolves. Eventually, when it was clear we weren’t going to get anywhere today, we had to call it quits and head back home. Unfortunately, for me, Markus was waiting when we returned. Great. As soon as we walked through the door, he pointed at me and said, “you, in my room, now.” I was sick of this, sick of him treating me like a child, and absolutely sick of him thinking he could talk like that to me in front of others and embarrass me. I was not a child anymore, and he needed to see that. When I entered the bedroom, he closed the door behind me and I sat on the edge of the bed. “What were you thinking Hazel. Do you have any idea how dangerous it is to go hunting vampires?” I didn’t say anything and waited for him to finish his lecture. “I don’t want you doing that again, do you hear me?” He had rambled on for a while before that last sentence, but I had drowned most of it out and couldn’t remember what he had said. It was my turn. “I’m sorry you feel that way, Markus, but I am a grown adult, and before you interrupt me, mom has taken me to every doctor and shrink you could find and there is absolutely nothing wrong with me mentally. The only thing that’s wrong with me is I am an omega and that scares you, we don’t know what it means or why, but it certainly doesn’t mean I am not still a twenty-five-year-old grown a*s woman. You need to stop talking to me like that in front of others, it’s belittling and humiliating because I’m an adult, not a child.” I felt really proud of myself for that response and thought it had gone well until Markus raised an eyebrow and said, “right, you mean the grown a*s woman who still likes to sit in my lap and have cuddles? That grown a*s woman?” Well, when he put it like that. I needed to make him hear me, but I was struggling to find a way. “Sure, I enjoy cuddles with my parents, most people do, ok sitting in your lap may be a little childish, but I guess I’m just a daddy’s girl doesn’t mean I’m not an adult though.” I could see my argument wasn’t winning until I mentioned being a daddy’s girl, he grew as flustered and uncomfortable as Mason had earlier, and I did a happy dance inside my head. I could use this against him. “So, if you’re going to treat me like a child, I will have to act accordingly.” He frowned at that in confusion, and asked, “what does that mean?” I got up off the bed and walked over towards him. Leaning on tip toes, I reached up and gave him a quick peck on the lips and laid my hands on his shoulders as I quietly said, “nothing daddy, I’ll be a good girl for you.” It took all my might and willpower to not burst into laughter at his face. He blushed slightly and tried to compose himself and managed to get out, “Hazel, I don’t think you realize just how naive you are.” He gently guided me to the bed and sat down beside me. “You need to be careful with the things you say, especially around dominant male wolves that know you are unclaimed and unmated.” I clearly looked as confused as I felt because he carried on and answered my unasked questions, “messing around and calling a man daddy and saying you’ll be a good girl for him can have some males losing control, you understand?” I didn’t, “no?” Sighing he explained, “the wolf in us brings out our dominant side naturally, but it also means we can lose control a lot easier than if we were human. Any dark urges a male might have could c***k if you push them enough.” I stopped him there and waving my arms said, “woah, woah, woah, are you trying to say if I call a dude daddy he’s going to r**e me?” Markus laughed, but quickly stopped himself and tried to stay serious. “Not quite, but if you’re going to tease a guy and say things like that, and he’s feeling…frustrated, it’s not going to end well.” “Are you trying to have the ‘talk’ with me, because I already know about s*x, and also you’re really, really bad at it.” He managed to hold the laugh in this time and answered, “you really don’t make this easy, I’m just telling you to be careful, I know you were trying to make me feel uncomfortable as s**t because you want me to stop thinking of you as a kid. I’m just warning you to be careful with how you try to wind up or manipulate the male wolves, unless you want them trying to mate with you.” It was my turn to blush, and I wisely didn’t say anything else. A moment of silence passed, and he pulled me in against his chest. “I love you Hazel, I just want what’s best for you and I admit I can be overprotective, and you’re right, I shouldn’t talk to you like that in front of the pack, I’ll do my best not to in future.” He knew we were good when I snuggled against his chest and he lightly kissed the top of my head. “Go back to Lydia and Mason.” I looked up at him and seeing my hesitant face he smiled and said, “you can help them investigate, but leave the dangerous stuff to them, please. I trust them both enough to know they have the strength and skills to protect you, so you can tag along, but if it starts getting dangerous, or you come across any vampires, let them do the fighting and get help. Ok.” This was the most he had ever let me do, and I didn’t want to push him, so I eagerly nodded and hugged him. I bounded back down the stairs happily forgetting I was wearing boots with a slight heel to them, (I was still getting used to this as I had only ever worn trainers) and tripped and roly pollied my way down the rest of the stairs landing in a heap at the bottom. Mason just looked at me, not showing what he was thinking while Lydia was laughing, so hysterically she lost her breath and started to dribble. I got to my feet laughing almost as much as Lydia and losing the tough pissed off attitude I had been trying to go for, for her daring to laugh at me. We were finally calming down when Rachel walked through the door back from a client’s house. She saw Mason standing beside us and grabbing his hand, pulled him along with her towards her bedroom. He didn’t resist, but he didn’t look too happy either. I followed Lydia to the living room where the computer was and sat beside her while she typed in our town and searched for any murders nearby that were similar to the werewolf victim’s death. There weren’t any or if there were they weren’t made public. “Where do vampires usually like to live?” I asked. She gave up on searching and turned to look at me. “Usually, somewhere dark, abandoned and cold.” I thought about it for a minute and asked, “so where around this area are there dark, abandoned and cold places?” She frowned while thinking and then looked up grinning, “usually warehouses come to mind when I think of places like that and there are two I know of that are closed down and abandoned. We should check out all abandoned warehouses tomorrow and if that doesn’t pan out then perhaps an abandoned house, something along those lines, are usually their favorite living conditions.” “Aren’t vampires usually sophisticated and clean and intelligent?” She nodded and answered, “yes, they can be, beautiful too, but if they don’t feed enough, then they look like something out of a horror film, like Nosferatu or the living dead.” I never knew that and nodded thoughtfully. It was twelve in the afternoon the next day when Mason came into the living room and sat down. I watched silently when Sarah rushed into the living room looking slightly panicked. She was holding Tom, her three-year-old son, none of the pack members were around, either at work or training downstairs with Markus. She spotted Mason and rushed over to him pleading, “Mason, could you do me a huge favor and watch Tom for me, he has nursery in half an hour and I don’t have anyone else to ask or take him for me. I have a job interview in twenty minutes, and it takes fifteen minutes just to get there.” Without waiting for an answer, she dumped Tom into Masons lap. Tom started playing with Masons military tags on his necklace while Mason held him awkwardly. “Uh, sorry I can’t, I’m no good with kids, I wouldn’t have a clue how to look after him.” “Please, I promise he’s good, he’s had his lunch, all you have to do is pretty much play with him for ten minutes and then start making your way to his nursery. It’s a ten-minute walk, St. Junes primary school.” She looked pleadingly, spotted me in the corner and said, “ooo, you can take Hazel with you, she’s great with kids.” Mason looked over at me and asked her, “well, why can’t Hazel watch him then?” Sarah looked uncomfortable and didn’t really know what to say. I rolled my eyes knowing exactly why, she thought I wasn’t mentally up to the challenge, being a kid and all myself apparently, thanks to Markus teaching this to everyone for years instead of just being honest about me being an omega. “Just go, I’ll make sure Mason finds where he needs to go.” I said. “Thank you, you’re both live savers.” She rushed off before Mason could protest, and I only grinned in response to his glare. I left the room to get a drink and when I came back, I watched Mason sitting on the floor with Tom playing with Toms toy animals. It melted my heart seeing how good he was with kids when he thought no one was looking. I admit I thought it was incredibly hot seeing this gorgeous hunk of a guy, his muscular body and tough military background showing a more vulnerable and sweet side of himself to a toddler. When I stopped spying and stepped into the room, Mason had been in the middle of role playing a lion with the lion toy and jumped so hard he threw the toy and yelled, “f**k me!” I managed by sheer will to stifle the laugh and said, “aw don’t be ashamed to show your soft side Mase, you’re great with kids.” I gave him two thumbs up, and he flipped me the finger in response. He looked up at the clock and got up and grabbed Toms lunch bag. “Come on then, buddy, let’s go.” He held his hand out to Tom, but Tom reached his little hands up toward Mason so that he had to pick him up and carry him. “You’re coming with me,” he demanded and walked out the front door, expecting me to just follow him, I did. When we reached the school, I felt like I was walking with a damn celebrity with all the stares the moms and even the teachers were giving to Mason. I rolled my eyes inwardly, even though I was just as smitten. Toms teacher came over, with her blonde hair and blue eyes, she was wearing a summer dress and a white cardigan, looking like the sensible but pretty girl next door type. She shook Masons hand, which I was pretty sure teachers didn’t usually do, and she asked, “are you Tom’s daddy?” She finally clocked me, standing beside him and asked, “and this must be mom?” I didn’t fail to notice that she was trying to figure out if he was single and also that she was married if that wedding ring was anything to go by. I’d come here before with Sarah and knew this teacher knew damn well we weren’t his parents, or at least I wasn’t. I played along anyway. “Oh, hey, yes, my husband had a day off work, so we thought it would be nice to come together to drop this little man off today.” I watched the disappointment flash across her face before she composed herself and I saw Mason’s eyebrows raise at my words. Tom had already run off inside by now, and I could see Mason was going to correct me about him being my husband, so I quickly put my arm around his waist leaning in and used my other hand to pull his face down towards me, so I could kiss his cheek. “Oh, that’s lovely—“ the teacher was going to say something else but was cut off by another parent coming over and interrupting, a welcome distraction I could tell from the teachers face. Mason looked down at me with narrowed eyes when we were left alone. “What?” I asked innocently. He rolled his eyes and walked off so that I had to run to catch up. “So are we going to check out those warehouses with Lydia when we get back?” I asked breathlessly when I reached his side. “Yes, she wanted us to leave by one so she’s probably waiting back at the house for us.”
