Chapter 13: Birthday girl

3523 Words
When we got back, Lydia was indeed waiting for us. We didn’t even get a chance to sit down before she was walking out the door knowing we would follow. We checked the first two warehouses she had mentioned yesterday, but they were empty, no hint or sign of any vampires. We walked a lot of hours searching, it wasn’t until we entered an empty abandoned house that was tucked away from any other homes that we finally smelt vampire. It was a god awful smell, like rotting flesh and death. Even the pretty vampires smelt the same. I didn’t know if these would be pretty or hideous. We searched as quietly as we could but besides dirt, rubble and blacked out windows, we didn’t find anything. We turned to leave when a dark blur flew by us and Lydia spun around following the movement. I followed her gaze and saw perched on the corner of the wall a vampire. They were like spiders in some ways, they could climb walls and cling to them easily. This vampire looked like a mix of both beautiful and hideous all at the same time. Its eyes glowed red, and its skin ran with red glowing veins, it was female with long black straight hair that fell down, and it wore a long lacy white dress. No vampire had ever been described as having red glowing veins running across its body or red eyes for that matter, and I knew instantly that it was from feeding on a werewolf. It was silent as it watched us, and as still as the dead. I was not prepared when it launched itself suddenly towards us midair. I jumped and fell back onto the floor while Lydia and Mason launched themselves at it. Mason grabbed it into a headlock, using all his strength, so she couldn’t bite or escape. Lydia used her bare hands to twist and wrench its head, until its neck snapped, and then she grabbed a knife that had been hidden in her boot and started hacking at its neck, until eventually its head fell away from its body. I didn’t watch, it wasn’t exactly a neat quick clean cut, it was slow and messy. When I looked at Mason I noticed with a chill that he seemed to enjoy watching, and for a brief moment, I saw a small glimpse of the side to him that had the rest of the pack almost scared and on edge around him. When they were done, Lydia tucked her blade away and said, “come on, we have no idea when the rest of them will return or how many there are.” I was still reeling from the expression on Mason’s face when Lydia had been cutting the head off, it was chilling, and now I wanted to know more about what had the pack so on edge around him. I knew Markus wouldn’t tell me, so I would have to do some digging on my own. Lydia and Mason reported back to Markus, he wasn’t happy that I’d been there when the attack happened, but he kept his promise and didn’t say anything in front of them. He caught me on the stairs, where I’d been trying to go hide in my room. “What happened?” He asked. “They already told, you didn’t they?” “Yes, but I want your version.” He was testing me, I realized, to see if my story would match up to what they had told him. “I was behind them when it happened, they were superfast and Mason had the vampire in a headlock, so she couldn’t get away or bite anyone, Lydia cut its head off. I didn’t watch, and I didn’t get hurt.” He looked at me for a moment and, then, seeming satisfied, nodded and let me go. When the next morning came, I woke up at six like usual and though I really couldn’t be bothered to wear tight clothing so early, I made myself pull on skinny jeans and a plain white t-shirt that had a knot in it. I didn’t bother with makeup today as I just couldn’t be bothered to spend two plus hours applying it, besides, It was my birthday. I had my cereal as usual and wanted to see Mason, but he wasn’t here. The day was uneventful, mostly, I think Markus had told Lydia and Mason to leave doing anymore digging on the vampires today because it was my birthday. Cringe. Lydia was sitting in the living room with some other pack members, and that’s where I found Mason sitting on the sofa with Rachel cuddled up to him. I tried so hard not to blush when I entered the room, and he looked up at me. Others looked casually over too, but it was only him who made me blush so hard. I shoved the sinking feeling in my gut as well that I always got whenever I saw him and Rachel together, he wasn’t mine, he wasn’t even single, so I knew I should kill these feelings I had for him, but I just couldn’t seem to. Everyone shouted happy birthday and started to come over to me and give me birthday cards and gifts, in the end they had to put the rest on the table because I couldn’t carry so much. I must admit, the big kid that I was, that it was the one awesome thing about being in a pack, lots of people meant lots of gifts! I thanked everyone and chatted with them for a while and tried not to get defensive when they spoke to me and treated me like a child. It wasn’t their fault, it was Markus’ fault for lying to them and making out I wasn’t quite right in the head instead of admitting I was an omega. All werewolves, both male and female, were naturally dominant, strong and loved to challenge one another, so when I had been the complete opposite, some the the pack had started asking questions, which is when Markus had come up with the stupid lie. I wondered sometimes if he was ashamed of me being an omega, so much so that he would rather believe I had the mind of a child. I had managed to do a little bit more research into omegas, I couldn’t find anymore on werewolves, but real wolves I seemed to tick all the boxes for as well. I was shy but also very playful and happy, I loved to make others happy, and I had zero interest in challenging any of the pack or gaining a higher rank. When it came to my pack, I still had that fiercely protective instinct to defend and protect them, but if a pack member themselves were to hurt me physically or emotionally, I was more likely to just stand there and take it rather than defend myself. Basically, I was everything a normal werewolf wasn’t. I had lunch with mom and Markus and when I got back home I was secretly relieved. I was at that point when you really like someone, and they are all you can think about and all you want to do is see them again. It was starting to suck because along with those feelings was that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach because I knew I couldn’t have him, even if by some miracle him and Rachel broke up I knew he would never want me, I was not as beautiful as Rachel and I had no doubt he would recoil from me afraid that he would be taking advantage of my young mind or some crap. Cheers, Markus. I kicked my shoes off and barely had time to breathe before Rachel was tugging me up the stairs to join her in her room. I saw Mason sitting back against the bed and a movie playing. It took me a few minutes to figure the movie was Sinister. “Come sit with us, you can sit in the middle, I know you like that.” Rachel didn’t wait for me to answer she gave me an encouraging push onto the bed. I crawled across to the middle and sat next to Mason, thanking the moon goddess that my dark skin hid the deep blush I felt creeping up to my cheeks. Rachel joined me and wrapped an arm around my shoulder. I was enjoying the movie until she got up to leave for work, like always. I should have realized that she had clearly invited me in hopes of having an innocent ‘pup’ (insert eye roll here) around them would help keep her under control, but that clearly didn’t work today. Mason didn’t say a word, but it was almost like she wanted to fight with him today. She turned to look at him after tying her hair back and said, “well, are you going to say goodbye?” “Bye,” he replied, and didn’t even bother to look up from the screen as he said it. “You’re a prick,” she spat. That made him look up from the screen. He’s face was cold and emotionless, so you had no clue what he was thinking or feeling or if he was even feeling anything. “Why?” “Because you’re supposed to be my boyfriend, and you can’t even say goodbye to me when I leave for work or kiss me on the cheek.” He finally showed some emotion…anger. “f*****g hell, Rachel, you’re like Jekyll and Hyde. I can’t f*****g win with you, can I, I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t.” I think that was the first time I had ever heard him really swear before, and by Rachel’s face it looked like it was her first time too. She was shocked for a moment, and then she went crazy. She picked up the lamp on the beside table and threw it at him and because I was sat next to him, it hit me too. The hard part hit me on the nose and I grabbed my nose when pain hit me hard. Sheesh, the nose is so damn sensitive, I thought and then felt something wet rushing between my fingers. Her throw had been hard enough that it had caused my nose to burst and bleed, so I quickly put my other hand there to try and stop anymore leaking. Mason looked at the damage but didn’t get a chance to say anything or help me because she had already picked up her glass of water and launched that at him too, not caring about the damage she had caused me. “I f*****g hate you!” She screamed and came over to where Mason was now standing and punched him in the face. He didn’t even flinch, it was like nothing to him, but it was clearly something to her because I heard one of her knuckles c***k, indicating she had just broken it. She was too far gone to care and started laying into Mason. I couldn’t believe I was seeing this side of her, she had always seemed so nice and delicate and girly, but I did recall an ex of hers who used to always seem withdrawn and quiet towards the end of their relationship, now I knew why. Mason blocked most of her hits, but that was all he would do to defend himself, it wasn’t until I got up to get away and out of the room to clean myself up that everything changed. As I had gotten up off the bed I tried to steer clear, but the room wasn’t that big so when she pulled back her fist to hit Mason again, her elbow struck me in the side of the head hard, making me stumble. When Mason saw that, he lost his s**t. He blocked her punch by grabbing her fist in his hand and squeezed until a few fingers broke, and she almost fell to her knees from the pain. She still tried to fight him, so he grabbed her by the hair and threw her out of the room, but she came flying back through the door and threw herself at him. He managed to get her into a bear hug and tackled her to the floor and pinned her arms down while straddling her. “Rachel, f*****g calm down!” He yelled. She wasn’t listening, her wolf had taken over at this point, and she was in a frenzy, she kicked up at him and fought so hard that she managed to wriggle out from under him and stand up. When she, again, went to punch him, he blocked it, grabbed her by the hair and smashed her face against the wall. A gash appeared above her forehead and blood started pouring down her face, but she still went for him undeterred. At this point, I realized he had been trying to be gentle with her because it was like he finally gave up and knew she wasn’t going to stop. He met her challenge and waited for her next hit and then dodged it and slammed his fist into her face so hard her feet came off the floor, and she crashed to the floor unconscious. I was kind of scared at this point. I had never really been around when the pack challenged one another to a fight or anything like that, And I felt scared that Rachel would wake up any second and go crazy again. Mason looked over at me and came over. “Are you ok?” He asked, concern on his face as he checked out the damage. I only nodded in response because blood was all over my lips at this point. He gently guided me out of the room and down to the bathroom and sat me on the toilet seat. I watched as he looked through the cabinets for a medical kit, grabbed it, and then searched through it for what he wanted. He took out the disinfectant wipes and began cleaning the blood off me until I no longer looked like Carrie from the movie. “Luckily she didn’t break your nose, but I think you got a contusion. You’ll be fine.” He looked me over and I blushed when our eyes met and hoped he didn’t notice. He gently moved my hair away from my face to look at the gash above my forehead. “It’s not deep, so you don’t need any stitches.” He moved away from me and leaned against the wall. “What the hell was that, has she attacked you like that before?” I looked at my hands and saw they were shaking slightly. “Yeah, a couple of times, usually I just block her until she gets tired. Hitting me I can deal with but hitting another pack member because she’s pissed off with me, I won’t allow. I’m really sorry you got hurt.” He sounded completely genuine and guilty, but he had that mask on, cold and empty, so you couldn’t see what he was thinking. “Yeah, happy birthday to me,” I laughed. “f**k, I completely forgot it’s your birthday, I’m so f*****g sorry, I was going to get you a card.” “It’s ok, looks like you’ve had a lot to deal with lately.” I was absolutely terrified and shy and blushing so hard I felt sweat, but I had to try and see if I could get this one thing from him because I knew it would be the only chance I would ever get. Gulping but hiding my fear behind jokes, I made it sound like a light joke when I asked, “although, seeing as you didn’t get me anything, I think I at least deserve a birthday kiss.” Oh my goddess, I said it, I actually said it. He raised his eyebrows when I said it and answered, “hell no, I’m not going to be that guy.” I felt completely rejected and a wave of depression came over me, but I hid it behind humor. “Pfft, and what exactly does that mean?” He folded his arms and replied, “it means I’m not going to take advantage of you, I’m not a pervert.” I laughed though I felt like crying and said, “what on earth are you talking about, I’m twenty-six, a grown a*s woman, and I’m only three years younger than you.” He shrugged uncomfortably but didn’t say anything. “Please tell me you don’t believe Markus’ crap about me being like a child, it’s a load of bull because he’s way too overprotective.” “Maybe.” He sounded cold and detached and I didn’t like that at all, it hurt. I went over to him and even though he had his arms folded I placed my hands gently on his waist and thought maybe, if I didn’t make it feel so personal it might be easier for him. If I made it sound like I just wanted the experience and not him specifically. “Please Markus, you’re the only male friend I have, and I feel comfortable with you. I’ve never been kissed in my life, and I would give anything to have just one kiss.” He narrowed his eyes at me suspiciously, “you’ve never been kissed?” “No, I’m not that pretty and on top of that, I have Markus blocking my every chance to date someone. Please, Mason.” He was still in that cold mood, but I felt it thaw just a tiny bit. “Hazel, I’m sorry I can’t, I’ve only just joined this pack and the last thing I need is the alpha pissed at me.” “Why would he know, I definitely would never tell him or anyone, please, it’s just a birthday kiss nothing more.” I reached up and pulled his head down, so I could reach his lips, and very gently kissed him on the lips. I wasn’t brave enough to give more than a peck and prayed he would take the lead. He didn’t. “Happy birthday,” he smiled. I narrowed my eyes at him, “that was pathetic, my mother kisses me like that.” He laughed and unfolding his arms, leaned down and kissed me on the lips…for two seconds. “Mason, please!” I begged. He shook his head and mumbled, “we really shouldn’t.” “Please, I just want to experience one real kiss from a man in my life.” “Don’t be so dramatic,” he laughed and added, “you have years to experience all that.” I didn’t laugh or even smile when I said, “you don’t know Markus, he will have me die a virgin. Besides, who do you think is going to want me if everyone thinks of me the same way you do?” He took me more seriously at the last part and sighing answered, “if I do this you can’t ever tell anyone, if you do, I’ll deny it, and I’ll make sure they believe me.” I nodded eagerly, and he carried on, “I mean it Hazel, I want you to know this is just a birthday kiss and nothing more, I’m doing it because it’s your dying wish, apparently.” He rolled his eyes at that and finished, “once I do this, that’s it, don’t ever ask me to kiss you again, ok?” It really hurt hearing him say all this, but I didn’t let it show on my face, I knew what he meant, he was telling me this meant nothing to him, that he was simply doing this as a favor to a friend and that I was to in no way imply that it was anything more or try to make it more. The hurt was there but so was excitement, it was true everything I had said, I had never been kissed in my life, never even been on a date and here I was about to get a kiss from a wolf I was in love with. He leaned down and pressed his perfect lips against mine and slowly moved them. I copied what he did, butterflies flooding my stomach and making me feel things in low down places. I practically soaked my panties when he slid his tongue into my mouth and deepened the kiss. I wrapped my arms around his neck and almost fainted with happiness when he slid his arms around my waist. This. Was. Perfect. I don’t know where I got the courage from, but I managed to move so that my back was pressed against the bathroom door, making it so he had to press himself up against me. I was definitely trying to turn this into more than just a simple kiss.
