CHAPTER 1 ( THE AGREEMENT)
Silence.
Too heavy, too sharp, too wrong.
Liana paused halfway down the stairs.her fingers tightening around the wooden railing. Her father's house was never quiet at night. He always had the television on, or music playing softly from the old stereo her Kate mother loved so much.
But tonight, everything was still
Even the air felt tense
Her heart thudded quietly as she took another step, then another, moving toward the dimly lit corridor leading to her father's study. She had grown up here. She knew the house like the back of her hand. Yet suddenly, every creak of the floor felt unfamiliar, almost warning her to turn back.
She didn't listen.
“...your family made a promise," a deep voice said from behind the study door.
Not her father's voice.
This one was smoother, colder a stranger who sounded like he wasn't used to being told no.
Her father responded, but his voice trembled, “I know what the agreement says, but my daughter she's young. she's barely begun her life. Surely your parents didn't intend—"
“My parents intended exactly what they wrote," the man interrupted his tone sharp as ice. “Your daughter will become my wife. The contract will be fulfilled.”
Liana froze.
Wife?
Contract?
Her pulse quickened. confusion flooding her brain. Her father never talked about contracts with strangers in the middle of the night. He was a quiet man a lecturer, a researcher... not someone who made dangerous deals in whispers.
“Please," her father said shakily, “You must understand this agreement was made out of desperation. My wife was ill. I had no choice."
“You had a choice," the stranger replied.“And you made it. Now it is time to honor it."
Liana leaned closer, her breath shallow.
She didn't mean to make a sound. But one of the old wooden stairs creaked sharply beneath her foot.
The voices stopped instantly.
A chair scraped. Footsteps approached the door.
Her stomach dropped.
The doorknob turned, and the study door opened slowly, revealing her father pale, exhausted, looking like he had aged ten years in one night.
“Liana," he whispered, trying to force a smile. “You're awake,"
She swallowed hard. " Dad... what's going on? Who—"
The second figure stepped into view.
Tall.
Impeccably dressed in a charcoal-black suit that looked tailored just for him.
His presence filled the doorway like a shadow swallowing the room.
And his eyes....
Jet black intense, Focused entirely on her,
He didn't blink. He didn't smile,
He simply watched her, like he already knew every secret she had ever kept.
“Miss Liana," he said, his voice smooth but with a quiet weight that sent chills down her spine. “We finally meet."
Liana's breath caught.
Her father cleared his throat. “Liana... this is Adrian Cassano."
The name hit her like a jolt.
Cassano.
Everyone in the country knew that name whispered in business circles, printed on financial headlines, rumoured among people who pretended not to fear powerful men.
The Cassanos were wealth, influence, mystery... and something darker. Something noone said aloud but everyone felt.
She looked from her father to Adrian, confusion swirling like a storm.
“My daughter, " her father continued in a strained voice, “this man his family was the one who helped us many years ago. When your mother was sick."
Liana blinked. “I know they helped with the hospital bills, but I thought that was out of kindness. I didn't know it came with... conditions."
Her father let out a breath like something inside him was breaking.
“It wasn't charity, Liana. Your mother needed treatment we couldn't afford. I signed an agreement, I thought they'd never enforce it."
Adrian stepped forward, hands clasped behind his back.
“My parents are no longer alive to see this union," he said, his expression unreadable. “But I honor their wishes. And their last wish was simple: that their future heir would marry you,"
Her heart stopped.
“What?" she whispered.
“Liana," her father said, voice barely holding together, “ you and Adrian were promised to each other when you were little. It was a way to bind our families. A way to repay our debt."
Liana stared at him, disbelief crashing over her.
“I was promised?" she repeated, almost choking on the words. “Like... property?"
“ It wasn't —" her father began, but Adrian cut in smoothly.
“It was a strategic alliance," he said, as if that made it better. “One your father relied on. One my father trusted. The contract still stands."
Liana took a step back.
Then another.
“So what?" she snapped, anger burning through the fear. “You expect me to marry a stranger? what about Kelvin I have been with him for two years now dad You think I'll just say yes because of something written before I could even walk?"
Adrian didn't flinch.
He didn't even raise his voice.
“No," he said simply. “ I expect you to say yes because refusing would destroy your father. and I also expect you to forget that lover of yours."
Her breath hitched.
“ My family has protected yours for years," he continued calmly. “ Your father's debt is not small. Without protection, certain people would be... eager to collect what is owed."
Liana turned to her father sharply, “Dad what is he talking about?"
Her father's face crumpled. “ Liana. I made mistakes. Mistakes I can't undo. And the Cassanos are the reason we're safe."
The room felt like it was spinning.
Adrian took a slow step toward her, his eyes never leaving hers, His presence was overwhelming, controlled, and somehow colder the closer he stood.
“The wedding is in seven days," he said softly.
Her mouth fell open. “Seven—?No! You can't "
“It has already been arranged," Adrian replied. “The invitations will be sent tomorrow. Your safety, and your father's safety, depend on your cooperation."
Liana's hands clenched into fists.
“You can't decide my life for me,“ she whispered.
Adrian lowered his head slightly, studying her expression with unsettling calm .
“Your life was decided long before tonight," he said, “By the agreement your father signed. By the promises our parents made."
His voice dropped, quiet but firm.
“And I do not break promises."
Liana felt tears sting her eyes not of weakness, but of fury.
“This is insane," she said. “You don't even know me."
A flicker barely noticeable passed through Adrian's eyes.
“I know enough," he said. “I know your name. I know your family. I know your father's sacrifices. And I know that once you become a Cassano, you will never be unprotected."
She shivered.
He said it like a bow.
Or like a warning.
“You're ruining my life," Liana breathed.
Adrian didn't soften.
He didn't apologize.
“That depends," he murmured, “on whether you see this marriage as a cage... or a shield."
She stared at him, unable to speak,
He turned toward the door, adjusting his suit jacket with silent precision.
“My driver will return tomorrow to take you for dress measurements." His voice was flat, final. “Be ready."
And then he walked out as if he hadn't just shattered her entire world.
Her father sank into his chair, trembling.
“Liana," he whispered, “I'm so sorry. I never meant for this to happen."
She took a shaky breath, her chest tight.
“Who is he really?" she asked quietly. “Because that doesn't feel like a normal businessman, Dad."
Her father looked at the doorway where Adrian had disappeared fear flickering in his eyes.
“He is the heir of the Cassano empire," he said.
“An empire built on power,money... and things better left unspoken."
Liana felt her heart freeze.
She wasn't just being forced to marry a stranger.
She was being tied to something far deeper. Far darker.
Far more dangerous.
Seven days.
Seven days until she became Liana Cassano.
Seven days before her life no longer belongs to her.
She whispered one word, her voice trembling with anger, fear, and disbelief.
“No..."
But the word felt small.
Useless.
Like it carried no power against Adrian Cassano a man who walked like he owned the world.
And soon... he would own her future too.
