Prologue...
The heartbreak
Ginger Fields POV.
Our prom was everything I had dreamed of; the colors, the lights, the excitement in the air. It was perfect and, as part of the organizing team, I couldn’t have been prouder. Now to top off an already great day, I wanted a dance with my boyfriend, Chase.
Looking around, I didn’t find him in the crowds. Where could he be? Taking my phone out of my purse, I called his line and it wasn’t going through, so I just decided to ask around in the hall.
“Hey, please have you seen chase?” I asked one of his teammates,
“Yeah, I saw him leave the hall some minutes ago.”
“Okay, thanks.”
Moving through a swarm of high school seniors, accepting and thanking people for compliments and a couple of “well done and great job greetings”, I was finally out of the hall.
Outside the hall, it was scanty enough to see Chase if he was just taking some air.
Walking out a bit further, I kept looking for him.
"I should be able to spot him if he is here," I said to myself as I still strained my eyes and went further out, but I still couldn’t find him and so I decided to call him again. This time, when I called, I noticed that his phone was ringing and he was not picking up, so I went back in, just hoping he was alright.
Getting back into the hall, I joined the party and I let the prom mood take over me as I removed my mind away from the fact that my boyfriend was somehow missing from our prom.
After almost 30 minutes of dancing and mingling with the crowd, I could not ignore the nagging thought in my mind that told me to call Chase again.
That was when I realized that I had not seen my best friend Tara either, but I was not really worried about finding her because she was going to be easy to find. If Tara was not on the dance floor she was definitely in the locker room, probably having a takeout session with one of her boyfriends. So I went to get her so we could have our dance since Chase was being a no-show.
I searched for her in the crowd before I then went to the locker room. The hallway to the locker room was a long one and I kept praying I saw her or Chase before I got to the locker room but my prayer was not answered.
Immediately after I got to the locker room, I heard Tara’s voice and almost yelled for her to come out, but not before I realized she was talking to someone, it was what I heard that made me stop in my tracks.
“When are we going public, Chase? You should tell her we are together tonight, that would ruin her perfect night”, Tara said, laughing, her voice dripping with envy.
“Dance for me before we leave.”
“You sure? Ginger is going to be looking for you.”
“She can wait.”
"Ohh?"
"Yeah, she can."
They didn’t notice me tiptoeing in as they started making out again. Seeing them made it real. I couldn’t talk, I was so angry, I couldn’t even see clearly and my hands got shaky. It hurt.
“Chase? Tara?” was all I said.
They both turned to me and the look of surprise on both their faces made me want to laugh and also scream. I was filled with so much pain, still watching them. I started retracing my steps, walking away from them, shaking my head as I moved till my back hit a locker, then I said,
“Don’t even follow me or try to talk to me because we will all regret it.”
and walked out of the room.
“Ginger! Come on…” “Ginger!!” they both yelled behind me.
“Gee, it was a mistake!” I heard Chase yell again.
“was it?” I faintly heard Tara say as I got further from the room and closer to the exit which leads to the hall.
I began hearing Chase’s steps behind me. He was still coming after me so I quickened my steps and the moment I burst into the party hall I was swallowed by disco lights, sounds, and people’s bodies.
Being here made me feel sick, I pushed my way through the crowd till I got out of the hall, took a few deep breaths to calm myself, and then, taking out my phone, I ordered a car ride back home.
While I waited in a hidden corner sobbing quietly, I looked at the party hall where the prom was happening and I felt so many emotions. I would have been satisfied with the outcome of the prom but I was going home with a broken heart.
Still hidden, I saw Chase come out of the hall and walk around a bit. He called out my name a few times. Almost immediately, I got a notification that my ride had arrived. I looked up and saw where the car was. I walked briskly towards it, trying to get into the car before Chase noticed. The moment I got in, I called out to him.
“Chase!”
“Gee…” he said as he ran towards the car I was in.
“ Here’s your bracelet, asshole. You can keep it.” That was all I said as I threw the expensive bracelet he had given me just before prom dinner on the ground of the parking lot.
“No, no, let’s talk Gee. I know…” he kept on shouting things I was not interested in listening to as he ran towards the car.
“ Let’s go,” I told the driver, then turning away from the window and my view of Chase, I sobbed quietly the whole way home.
