Chapter1-Pregnant
“I'm sorry, Miss Claire. However, you will have difficulty getting pregnant because your ovum is damaged due to the effects of chemotherapy. I suggest you agree to a hysterectomy immediately. If not, it will be very dangerous for your safety.”
The 23-year-old woman's tears upon hearing the doctor’s verdict. Her world collapsed. Because becoming a mother was every woman’s dream.
Claire bowed her head in sadness, imagining she would never have children or get married in her lifetime. What man would want to marry a sick woman who couldn't get pregnant?
“You don't need to worry, dear.” Elizabeth held her daughter's hand and smiled gently. “You will get better. I promise to find an experienced doctor to cure you, even if I have to travel around the world. You mustn't give up, okay?”
“Stop talking nonsense, Mom! Isn't the doctor's verdict clear to you?! I can't get pregnant! FOREVER!” Claire shouted, then rushed out, crying.
Elizabeth stood up spontaneously to chase after Claire. “Honey, wait—”
“Wait a moment, Elizabeth,” the doctor called. “I want to tell you something.”
“I don't want to hear anything more from you!” Elizabeth snapped. “Aren't you satisfied with disappointing my daughter?! How could you say that to her?! Even though I asked you to lie!”
“I'm sorry. I just couldn't bring myself to give Claire false hope, because I already consider her my daughter,” Catherine, the gynecologist and Elizabeth’s friend, said honestly.
“But …,” Catherine handed over a letter. “I didn't say she could never get pregnant. I just remembered I have a friend who can treat your daughter's condition.”
“Are you sure? You said Claire would have difficulty getting pregnant.” Elizabeth took the letter and read it.
“Claire could get pregnant, but the chances are slim. Maybe, her opportunity is only this month before her cancer further weakens her uterus. It's worth a try, right? We don't know our destiny.”
Elizabeth's eyes sparkled. Finally, Claire still had hope.

“Why did you bring me to this place, Mom? Didn’t you say we were going to consult a gynecologist?” Claire wondered, as Elizabeth instead took her to a famous club.
She felt inferior when passing by many celebrities and tycoons.
“We should go home. I don't want you to spend your retirement money on me.” Claire felt guilty for making Elizabeth work hard to fund her chemotherapy for five years.
Her father had the heart to abandon them for his mistress, while she couldn't work because of her weak physical condition.
“Never! We must see this doctor because she’s the only hope you have to get pregnant.”
“I don’t want to have children anymore, so you don’t need to worry about me, Mom. I’m sure I can live happily even without children.” Claire smiled. She didn’t want her mother to continue worrying about her to the point of torturing herself.
Claire realized her life had been a burden to Elizabeth. Besides, even if she had the potential to get pregnant, who would be willing to sleep with her to have a child?
Her face was ruined like a monkey’s because of chemotherapy’s effects, and her head was bald. All the men fled after seeing her.
“Shut up, or I’ll tape your mouth shut.” Elizabeth scowled, then led Claire to a room.
“I’d like to see Dr. Lily. Is she here?” Elizabeth asked a young woman standing at the door.
“Are you Ms. Elizabeth, the referral patient from Dr. Catherine?”
“Yes! It's me!”
“Follow me. She’s been expecting you.”
They entered a room at the end of the corridor. The aroma of medicine immediately greeted them.
“Dr. Lily, she’s here.”
“Hello! Nice to meet you!” A short-haired woman with heavy makeup smiled warmly.
Claire wasn’t sure this woman was a doctor. Who opens a clinic in a club?
“Please, have a seat.”
Elizabeth pulled Claire’s hand when she just stood frozen.
“Is she your daughter who wants treatment?”
“Yes! Can you help her?”
“Of course.”
Elizabeth beamed with joy, but Claire did not.
“Are you sure you're a doctor?” Claire frowned suspiciously. Only a weirdo would open a practice in a club.
“Watch your mouth, Claire. Don’t offend Dr. Lily,” Elizabeth protested.
Lily chuckled at Claire. “This club is just a disguise, so people who want treatment from me aren’t embarrassed because infertility is a stigma for some people. Especially many celebrities or tycoons who are my patients. They don’t want their reputation ruined by their condition.”
As strange as it sounded, Claire couldn’t deny the truth. She remembered everyone who had sneered at her because of her illness.
“According to the information I got from Catherine, you have difficulty getting pregnant because of uterine cancer,” Lily said, reading her colleague’s letter with a serious expression. “Is that correct?”
Claire weakly nodded.
“Can she be cured, Doctor?” Elizabeth asked hopefully.
“Of course! That’s an easy problem to solve.”
Elizabeth cheered in excitement, but Claire did not. She feared Lily was a fake gynecologist who just wanted to take her money.
“How do you plan to treat me?” Claire challenged. Living in modern times is tough. The prices of necessities skyrocketed, while job vacancies dwindled due to tight competition, causing many to turn to robbery and fraud.
Lily looked at Claire seriously. “We will remove your ovum, then replace them with new ones from a woman who’s never been sick, and I’ll inject sperm from a robust man to increase the pregnancy potential.”
Claire was shocked to hear that. She didn’t expect the doctor to be so smart. The reason she had difficulty getting pregnant was that her eggs weakened over time.
“But how will I find an ovum donor?” Claire doubted any woman would willingly donate such a valuable organ to her.
“Don’t worry. I have many ovums stored in my lab by my patients.”
“Why would they do that?”
“Many women fear infertility in old age, while they can’t marry or get pregnant because of their career or illness, so they choose to freeze their ovum. Eggs will age or deteriorate. Freezing them keeps them healthy.”
Claire smiled broadly upon hearing that.
“If you agree, we can start the treatment now.”
Claire quickly nodded, then Lily escorted her to a treatment room in a secret area, while her mother waited in the office.
“Before we retrieve the eggs, you need to change clothes first.”
Claire nodded. She immediately changed into a surgical gown and then lay on an operating table.
Lily and several assistants surrounded Claire. Her heart pounded as Lily injected the anesthetic.
Gradually, Claire’s vision dimmed, and her consciousness faded. A few minutes later, Claire fell asleep.
