ZYLA: WILLIAM, THE HUMAN

2221 Words
=WILLIAM=               I felt the intense pair of eyes from afar but I didn’t need to see who it was to know who it was, that sweet scent in the air is enough to tell me who it was, my beloved and clueless mate, Zyla Harper. I can tell that she had finally figured it out this time but there’s really no harm in rushing things. The first time I met the clueless Zyla was when I accompanied my father for his last visit as the president of this laboratory. I had visited this laboratory a lot of times before that but I had never encountered Zyla and not until that visit with my father. The scent had suddenly filled the air and I had frantically searched for someone who was frantically searching for me as well but all I found was the clueless Zyla. I was confused as to why Zyla didn’t find out at the same time as I did but I just suddenly perhaps understood. Maybe because of what I am, my breed to be exact.               I am a werewolf. My biological mother is a werewolf who hadn’t met her mate yet when she met and had a short relationship with my purely human biological father. My biological mother is a kind and elegant woman and she raised me by herself until I turned five which was when she met her own mate. Her mate is possessive of her and had a mixed feeling for me and knowing that things could get complicated as time would go by, my mother sent me to my biological father. The process of acceptance was a bit hard for my father’s family but everything turned out to be all right in the end. My biological mother never showed up in front of me again but Angelica, my stepmother and the wife of my father, had done her best not to make me feel motherless. For all of this, I am thankful to her and to my stepsiblings. However, there was once when the family had to seek out my mother. It was that time when I started shifting. Everyone was surprised and shocked of that supernatural secret but that too did not destroy the relationship I had with my family. The secret was kept inside the family and to everyone else, humans and supernaturals alike, since my mother had told me that I smelled really human to her. True to that, no one, not one supernatural being had ever bothered me. I was fine living this way, as human as possible but I guess I also cannot escape the fate of having a mate.   I had hated the idea of having my life controlled like that and I hated the idea of “fate” choosing who I need to love. I was determined to reject the one that fate chooses for me but in the end, I was played. Zyla did not even know that I was her mate and to her, I am just another human.               I thought that it works better this way but fate was not done. Work had made me frequent the laboratory. As I had found out, Zyla was rarely around but even so, fate made sure that I see her on those rare occasions that she’s around. I was annoyed but I still found myself observing Zyla from afar. With an exception to one woman called Siva, Zyla never talked to anyone and no one would also dare to talk to her. Her co-workers either worship her or are jealous of her, not just because she’s the youngest genius here but also because she’s uniquely beautiful. She has a short reddish hair and a figure that women are craving for these days but what really attracts people to look at her are her blue eyes that seems too calm. Nothing could prove how the eyes are the windows of the soul other than Zyla. No one could read her unless she shows something in those beautiful eyes of hers but just like other people and aside from the pull that this mate thing is making, those mysterious eyes are the ones that had pulled me towards her. Safe to say that in the end, fate had won and I had fallen in love with Zyla unknowingly. However, the more I observe her, I had slowly came to the realization that something is weighting on her mind. Sure, I can finally accept this mate thing and can’t wait to finally officially meet Zyla but not like this when she’s distracted. I already know that taming Zyla would be a difficult task in the near future but maybe it would become easier if she’s not distracted.               That is why I can wait. She’s mine anyway and fate is still doing its job for the both of us.   =ZYLA=               I did my own research on William Johnson when I was back at my own apartment, a 10 minute walk, back and forth the big lab. It turns out that he is not the official president at the moment. He was placed in that position temporarily because of his management skills while the battle for the position of the CEO is still ongoing. He obviously has the skill for the position and yet people are making a simple thing into a complicated one. The rule is that only people with the Garret blood can sit as the CEO and William Johnson does have that blood but it seems like his birth is still being questioned and this is more so because there is a legal son, Myles Garret. Other than Myles Garret, there is also the legal daughter, Kylie Garret, but according to the information I had surfed from articles, they seem to be humble people. They seem to look like smart people who are not at all that greedy for the position that these people are pushing towards them. However, these are just from the social source, who knows if these are really the truth.               I sighed and closed my laptop. These things don’t really matter. I just want some clue on how I’m going to approach William Johnson and tell him that I’m his mate but even a naïve person like me can tell that that sounds crazy. I sighed again. I think this is the hardest part of having a human for a mate, I mean I’ll be pulling him towards a world that was entirely a fantasy to humans. I rubbed my temple for a while before finally giving up. There is a more serious matter at hand so for now, I’ll leave it to the fact that we are mates. Fate or something like that would, hopefully, take care of it somehow.               I changed my clothes and went back to the big lab. Siva is working on another batch of gene project and I had volunteered to help. It was for the purpose of hoping that I could get some ideas or be inspired on what to do with Day’s condition. Day seems to be doing all right for now but that condition of hers had come without notice and it could also worsen things without notice.               Before I knew it, I had stayed in the lab for one day and one night and I still could not come up with anything.   “I could really use a vacation somewhere relaxing when I’m done with all of these.” Siva shared when she joined me in the break room.   “But your work would pile up.” I said as I stood in front of the vending machine, deciding on what to munch on for starters.   “Well, I’d risk that. Besides, relaxing my brain could give me a fresh perspective on things. I think my brain is too tired to come up with anything new for the project. It just keeps repeating and repeating the obvious. I mean…”               I stopped choosing a snack when Siva’s words were processed. She does have a point on that one. Maybe I also need a vacation to shift my perspective. However, I immediately shook off the idea since time is not really a luxury for Day. Time is making her older by the minute. I continued the task of choosing my snack but was interrupted once again with the ringing of my phone. My phone rarely rings because I made sure that only my family could call me. I took it out and saw that it is an unknown number.   “Hello?” I still answered to be polite and to make sure that it’s not my family.   “Miss Harper?” Someone asked on the other side of the phone, unfamiliar to me.   “Yes?”   “Good morning Miss Harper. I’m Steve from Multinnova and I would like to invite you to the main headquarter once again to discuss the renewal of your contract.”               I looked at the date on the digital clock on the wall and saw that it’s that time of the year again, it’s the same day that I had signed the contract with Multinnova years ago. Every year, on the same day, I would sign the same contract at the main headquarter instead of here, at the big lab where every other employees here sign theirs. The special treatment is due to the fact that I had invented almost half of the company’s top leading products and I had also provided a lot of ideas that started a lot of projects in the big lab. In short and to quote Siva, I am the most valuable brain of the company.   “Is afternoon okay?” I asked as I calculated the time I finish eating and the ride to the main headquarters.   “Yes, of course. Please come at your own convenient time.” The man enthusiastically replied.   “Okay.”                I placed the phone back to my lab coat pocket and finally chose a snack.   “Your family?” Siva asked when I joined her at the usual couch.   “No. Contract renewal.” I simply answered.   “Ahhh. Hey doesn’t that mean that you’re actually not an employee of the company at the moment?” Siva asked as she laughed.   “No, the contract expires today at 3 pm so I am still an employee.”   “3 pm?”   “It was the time I first signed the contract.” I explained.   “Well then you better get going before that 3 pm rolls around.”               Traffic was as bad as ever but I never really minded it. There is something about just sitting at the back of the car and watch the world go by. For me, it’s a bit calming and the atmosphere just simply makes my mind go blank. This time, the difference with this ride is that the sun is shining in just the right temperature today and it’s making me want to doze off but even if traffic is bad, it’s still a “short” ride to the main headquarter of Multinnova. I started to review the contract in my head instead so that I can just sign and go. Those pieces of paper just contain my special condition and also the legal right of the company to use my inventions but to summarize the content of that contract, it simply states that my inventions are to be used solely by Multinnova and if ever I sold an invention to another company, I will be punished accordingly. I don’t really care since I know that I can trust this company. Besides, my mother had once said that even without working, I am already loaded enough to buy a nation. It’s just that I like my work and what I do, also added to the list is Willam, the human.               Security let me pass through easily and I boarded the elevator alone since it’s that time of the day when employees are on their seat, finalizing their final work for the day. When the doors closed, I saw my reflection and I stared at it. I pressed my lips together in contemplation when my thought suddenly went to William again. I mean a black v-neck, jeans and sneakers are not really what people would wear to entice their mate. I should know this much since I have sister who is a fashion designer. When all of us were still living together, my sister was already designing clothes and during that time, I picked up a few things from her but I never really used it but I do know that if women likes someone, they dress up…a form of seduction to be precise. Before I could contemplate the way I’m dressed a little further, a woman rushed inside the elevator and started rapidly pushing the buttons of the elevator.
