Darkness came suddenly. Metal crashed. Glass exploded. The car flipped. Aria’s body slammed hard, pain tearing through her ribs as the vehicle landed upside down. Something sharp dug into her skin. Cold glass pressed against her chest, her arms, her face. She couldn’t open her eyes. Blood slid warm from her head, dripping downward, pooling against her scalp as gravity pulled everything the wrong way. Her breath came shallow. Broken. The world felt cold. Too cold. Then footsteps. A shadow fell over her face. She felt it before she saw it, someone standing too close, blocking what little light remained. Then a voice. Low. Male. Calm. “The job is done ma.” --- Beep. A distant sound drifted in—slow, rhythmic. Beep. Her fingers twitched. The sound changed, quickening. Urgent. Something cold brushed her skin. A hand closed around hers, warm, human. “She—” a voice gasped. “Doctor—!” Light exploded behind her eyelids. Aria inhaled sharply, her chest jerking as air rushed into lungs that felt foreign, unused. Pain followed immediately, her head throbbed, her ribs burned, her body screamed in protest. Her eyes fluttered open. White. So much white. The ceiling blurred above her, swimming in and out of focus. Shapes moved, faces, shadows, but nothing made sense. The smell of antiseptic filled her nose, sharp and overwhelming. She tried to turn her head. Her neck barely responded. “Aria?” a woman’s voice whispered, trembling with disbelief. “Aria, can you hear me?” Aria’s lips parted. No sound came out. Her throat felt raw, as if she had forgotten how to use it. “She’s awake,” the nurse called out urgently. “She’s waking up!” Another voice. Footsteps. Movement. Machines beeped faster now. Aria blinked again, slower this time. Her gaze drifted downward, and that was when she noticed the clear tube beneath her nose. Oxygen. IV lines ran from her arm. Her body felt impossibly heavy, like it had been buried beneath concrete. Fear bloomed in her chest. She tried to speak. Only a hoarse sound escaped. The nurse leaned closer, eyes shining. “Easy. Don’t rush. You’ve been asleep for a long time.” Asleep? Aria swallowed painfully. Her lips trembled. Words came slowly. Broken. Fragile. “Julius…” The nurse froze. The room seemed to still. “Where…” Aria forced the sound out, her voice cracking, “…where is Julius?” Another nurse rushed in. Then a doctor. They exchanged quick glances, silent, loaded. No one answered her. Panic crept in, cold and sharp. “Please,” Aria whispered. “My wedding… it was…” Her breathing became shallow. The doctor stepped forward, his voice calm, professional, too careful. “Aria, you were involved in a serious motor vehicle collision,” he said. “You sustained multiple injuries. You’ve been unconscious for the past six months.” The words hit her like a blow. Six months? Her eyes widened, scanning the room in disbelief. Six months meant— “My wedding,” she stammered. “It was in three days. Julius and I—” Her voice broke. “Where is he?” Silence answered her again. Her heart began to race. The machines echoed it, beep, beep, faster now. Aria tried to push herself up. Immediately, a sharp, blinding pain shot through her lower back, radiating down her spine. She gasped, instinctively trying to swing her legs over the bed— Nothing happened. Her legs didn’t move. Not even an inch. They felt distant. Heavy. Like they didn’t belong to her anymore. Confusion turned to terror. “I—I can’t feel them,” she whispered, panic spilling into her voice. “My legs—” She tried again, forcing her body to obey. Pain tore through her spinal column. “Ma’am!” the nurse cried out. “Please don’t move!” Hands rushed to steady her. The doctor’s face lost its calm. “Aria, stop,” he said firmly. “You need to stay still.” “What’s wrong with me?” she demanded, tears burning her eyes. “Why can’t I move?” The doctor exhaled slowly. “You suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury,” he said carefully. “Specifically, damage to the thoracic region. At the moment, you’re experiencing paraplegia.” The word rang in her ears. Paraplegia. “You’re saying…” Her voice shook. “I can’t walk?” “We don’t know yet,” he replied. “The injury caused inflammation and compression of the spinal cord. Right now, there’s loss of motor function in your lower limbs. With treatment and rehabilitation, there is hope, but it will take time.” Time. Six months had already been stolen from her. Her chest tightened. Tears slid silently down her temples into her hair. The accident replayed in her mind, the darkness, the footsteps, the voice. It’s done ma. This wasn’t an accident. Her fingers curled weakly into the sheets. “Julius,” she whispered again, eyes locking onto the doctor. “Where is he?” The doctor looked away.
