Distance Between Us

CHAPTER FIVE

She woke up to sun rays peeking through her window , she turned off her alarm and headed to the bathroom to take a shower, she opened her walk in closet to pick out a dress , she couldn’t help but admire the little room ; it was painted in red with a little touch of white , it had a large full length mirror , a wardrobe and a shoe rack it also had a coat hanger , she looked around and smiled . She wanted to create a nice impression so she decided to go for a bold and vibrant color . She took out a black straight skirt and a red long-sleeved satin shirt ; she picked out a pair of red heels and a black bag to match , she dressed up and applied a little makeup on her face , made a little spin in front of the mirror and walked out of the house . She got into her car and off she drove to work .

She arrived at work early and went to her office , she was anxiously waiting to see her new boss , when she heard some people say the boss has arrived . She raised her head to see the man she insulted at the coffee shop . —please don’t let him be my boss — she silently prayed .

“Are you my new secretary?” He asked with a stern face .

“Yes I am , good morning “ she smiled .

“Get me coffee now “ he said without replying to her greetings and walked into the office .

— I’m dead — she thought to her self . She walked into his office with a cup of coffee.

“Here is your coffee sir “ she dropped the coffee mug on his desk with a smile . He put the coffee in his mouth and immediately spat it out .

“What is this ?“ He thundered .

“It’s coffee sir “ she was frightened.

“Is this what you call coffee ? “ he raised the mug towards her , “ get me another one , and make it better this time “.

“Yes sir “ she picked up the coffee mug and ran out of the office .

After rejecting her coffee twice , he finally accepted the mug and asked her to leave .

“This is going to be a long day “ she said to herself when she noticed it was just 10 in the morning.

In the office , someone was telling his friend how he punished her .

“You needed to see the look on her face “ she laughed .

“Come on man was it that bad “ the other person asked .

“Yes , she’s going to pay for talking back at me at the coffee shop “ he said .

“Okay man have fun , lest I forget ; your betrothed will be in the country tomorrow “

“Yeah I know , thanks for the reminder “ you could hear the sarcasm in his voice .

“Get her some flowers though “

“Yeah yeah , get off my phone man “ he laughed before ending the call .

Just then he heard a knock on the door .

“Come in “ he said in his usual cold voice .

“I just wanted to remind you of the meeting you have by 12 sir “. He quickly turned his head to the direction of the voice .

“What says the time now ?” He asked .

“It’s 11 o’clock sir “ she replied looking at her wrist watch .

“Tell the driver to prepare the car , cancel the rest of my appointments for today and tidy up any documents you have , you are coming with me and I don’t know when I’ll be done with the meeting “ he said without blinking .

“Yes sir “ she turned to the direction of the door and left .

FEW MINUTES LATER

“Sir the car is ready “ she spoke through the telecom phone on her desk .

“Wait at the car , I’ll be down in a minute “ he hung up the phone before she could reply . He quickly arranged his suite , picked up his phone from the desk and walked out of the office . He got to the parking lot and found her standing outside the car .

“Open the door “ he ordered ; she nodded and opened the door to the car for him to enter , she didn’t want any more trouble with him . They drove for about two hours before Arriving at the venue of the meeting , it was a hotel . Daniella stepped out of the car and quickly went to hold the door for her boss to get down from the car , she looked at the hotel and nasty thoughts filled her mind . She was still engrossed in her thoughts when she heard a voice from behind her .

“Are you going to stand there staring all day ? Move it, we’ve got work to do “ her boss voice jolted her back to reality.

“Sorry sir “ she said and hurriedly took his brief case . He stole a glance at her from time to time as they walked into the hotel .

The venue of the meeting was at the top floor ; it was a large conference hall with a projector at the front ; they took their seats and the meeting began shortly . Harry would steal a glance at Daniella from time to time ; Daniella on the other hand couldn’t wait for the meeting to be over so she could go home and cuddle her pillow , she fixed her eyes to the clock and was lost in her thoughts . It was almost 3pm in the afternoon when she heard the fat man say “we’ll come to the office tomorrow with our lawyers to sign the contract” they stood up to shake hands with her boss.

“We’ll be expecting you “ he smiled as they shook hands to seal the agreement .

“What a beautiful secretary you have there “ one of the men complimented.

“Of course she is “ harry nodded in agreement .

—did he just call me beautiful?— she asked herself trying to conceal the smile on her face . — did I just admit that she is beautiful?— harry asked himself but tried not to show it .

“We’ll be on our way now “ Harry said and beckoned on Daniella to follow him . She got up and bowed her head to the three men before turning to leave .

“Don’t read meaning to what I said earlier , you are anything but beautiful “ he said as soon as they got to the car .

“Yes sir “ she replied. She was hurt but tried not to show it ; for a minute she thought her boss was attracted to her , she’s been watching too many movies . She turned her head towards the window to avoid looking at him.

He could see the pain her eyes , a part of him reprimanded him but a part of him seemed not to care . He looked at his watch and there was still a little time before the close of work so he asked her to join him for launch.

“Sorry boss I have to head back to the office i still have some unfinished work and besides my car is still at the office , I wouldn’t want to trouble you “ she said not looking at him .

“Okay then if you insist “

“Thank you Boss “ she replied.

They got to the office and she hurriedly came out of the car and immediately went to her office , she shut the door to her office and took a deep breath before arranging her desk and heading for her car . She slumped on her bed as soon as she got home , she was drained . She walked to the bathroom and took a nice shower after which she did her night time skin care routine ; she felt hot even with the fan and Air conditioner on so she choose a light night gown and stopped just above her knees ; she climbed her bed and turned off the light .

“Was I too harsh on her ?” He asked himself as he stepped out of the shower , he couldn’t help but think that he was being too hard on her , it’s just her first day after all . “Okay harry , we are gonna cut down on the bossy attitude okay ?” He spoke to himself . — but damn she’s pretty — he quickly poured water on his face . He took a deep breath and went to bed .
