Waking up from a dreamless sleep, I smiled to myself, still in minor shock and disbelief at what happened the day before. As the events replayed in my head, my phone pinged. Then pinged again, and again, and again. 'WHAT THE F*CK!' I grabbed my phone and looked at the text messages rolling in from my co workers. They all asked me what happened and if I was coming in today. I replied back with the cliff notes of what happened and made the decision that I would not be coming back and broke the news to them. They all stated that they would miss me and could understand why I would make this decision, whether or not they agreed with it. After what felt like forever, I put my phone down mentally drained from answering the same questions all morning. Laying there, a single thought hit me like a two-ton truck. Fredrick. I didn't see him the day before and I more than likely wouldn't see him again. Just thinking about him made my heart hurt. 'It's for the better. I shouldn't be feeling this way about someone who doesn't want me the way I want him.'
It has been 3 months since I left the post office and even though I didn't have steady work I couldn't be happier. I started a small baking business selling cookies, brownies, cupcakes and other small baked goods. Also, I've been trying to get an online market going and it's doing okay, could be better, but I'm making it by.
With my baking, I have to go get supplies, because until you start having to bake bulk orders you don't really realize just how much sugar, flour and everything you really go through. I headed over to Sam's club, a wholesale store, with my list of supplies for orders and for recipes that I wanted to try out. I was about an hour into shopping and a little bit over half way through my list when this attractive woman caught my eye. She was just standing there staring at me. I gave her a small smile and a wave and kept it moving. Next aisle over the same thing, and for the next 10 minutes, everywhere I went I saw this woman. Something was off about her though. Sometimes she seemed to be talking to herself. Her eyes also got me worried. Once they were completely black, the next time they were glazed over. I swear I even saw a fang peak out from her lip. As I pushed my cart around the corner I stopped in my tracks as I heard a women's voice behind me.
"TABITHA! I KNOW YOU SAW ME!"
I don't know why, but something told me to turn around. The urge was strong, like something called to me. 'But she said Tabitha. She has me mistaken with someone else.' 'Turn around Chrys, it's time.' With that last line I jumped what felt like 10 feet in the air and turned around. I looked at this woman's eyes wide and full of fear. That other voice was not mine or the mystery woman who called out to me.
"Tabitha!....I'm sorry I don't know your person's name and..."
"Excuse you. I don't know who Tabitha is or who you are, all I'm trying to do is shop. Now if you would be so kind, leave me be." 'Chrys, that was rude to say to an old friend'
"What? What did you say? How did you know my name?!" I almost yelled at the woman, who was still standing there now looking completely lost.
"I didn't say anything else." She raised a perfectly done eyebrow at me.
"Well there's no one else here and someone keeps saying my name..." 'Chrys, listen to her. She'll help you figure out who we are.'
"My name is Leela and my bat's name is Judith. She has been talking with yours Tabitha. She says it's time for you to learn who you are and we are here to help." Leela said to me with all seriousness in her voice and plastered on her face. What happened next was not something I meant to do. I laughed, and not just haha, laughed but tears coming out of my eyes, and my sides were starting to hurt I was laughing so hard. Then I remembered, we're in a damn store. I calmed myself down and looked at Leela and it took everything in me not to laugh again.
"Listen lady, I don't know what your on but I'm busy and got sh*t to do and don't have time for this." I started to walk away but began to feel weak, light headed, almost like I was going to pass out. I looked back and Leela was still looking at me now with a slight smile on her face. 'I told you to listen to her. She can and will help you unlock us and so many other things. I'm going to put you to sleep now and by the time you wake up you'll be ready. And don't worry, you're in good hands, Leela is an old friend and also owes me a favor.' With that everything went black and I fell into unconsciousness.
'Where am I? Hello? HELLO?' I called out but no one answered. I had just woken up and found myself in a small room. White walls and no windows. How long have I been here? Sh*t what time is it? I stood up really just to stretch my legs, no need to walk around the room was that small. I stood there trying to remember what happened before I woke up. 'I was shopping. Shopping for what? Supplies. Supplies? Baking supplies.' What happened? There was a lady. Linda? No, I don't think that was her name. Lisa!
"Leela" I jumped and turned around to be faced with not a person per say, but a person's figure. "Her name is Leela. And my name is Tabitha. I am your essence. I am what you will become when you finally figure us out."
"What the literal f*ck is going on here? What is this 'us' mess you keep talking about? I mean sh*t you've said 5 sentences to me and each one has had you saying that in one way or another."
"Chrys, if you would just relax and listen. I will tell you what you need to know for you to be ready."
"Ready for what?!" All I was ready to do was go the hell home.
"If you would relax I could tell you what is going on." Even though this essence didn't have a face I could almost see that she was smiling as me. Looking at the essence, I began to feel calm, like a blanket of soothing relief was placed over me. "Now! Let me begin!" Tabitha exclaimed. In front of me appeared an old leather bound book. The pages looked torn and well read. "Go ahead. You don't have to be afraid of me or it. Neither one of us bites" she said, that last part with what felt like a smile. I carefully picked up the fragile looking book and opened it to the front page.
"Chapter 1: Hybrids?" I looked at Tabitha, not understanding what I was starting to read.
"Keep reading. It will all make sense. If you have any questions, I will be more then happy to answer them best I can." Tabitha stated. I looked back at the book and continued to read.
About 45 minutes later, I looked up at Tabitha...."Sooooo your saying that I'm one of these things?"
"Yes"
" OK?.........." I couldn't think of anything else to say. What could I say? I have to be dreaming. There is no way in hell that any of this could be real. How could it be real? I mean a hybrid of a vampire and a witch? How does that even happen? Wait....those creatures aren't even real! God, I HAVE to be dreaming. There is no other way. Nothing else can explain what is going on.
"No you're not dreaming. Here, let me explain something. When every creature comes of age, usually around 25 years old, they find their 'mates' and when some one's mate has a repressed creature it is their duty to bring that repressed creature forward and do what mates do."
"So what are you then?"
"I am your essence."
"What does that mean?"
"I am your powers. When you decide you are ready to learn what you can do, you will be able to fully access every ounce of power that I hold within me."
"Leela said something about a bat?"
"Yes"
"Are you a bat?"
"Yes and no. I am your power. When you decide to have an open mind, I can come forward and I can show you what we can do together. Then, once we get that, we will find our mate and, with our combined powers, we will be unstoppable and the two of you will take your rightful place. Our people have waited a long time for this reunion and it's time we gave them what they deserve."
"AND WHAT IS THAT??!! I don't understand what and why this is happening to me!"
"I swear when we find mate I will hurt him for not doing his duty and preparing us. He better have a damn good reason for neglecting us." Tabitha pouted.
"Do you know who mate is?"
"Fredrick."
