Illaria watches through the window as Alpha Zawyer leaves the Packhouse and approaches his Beta. The two men exchange a few words, and she can see the small excited smile on Beta's face, still reminiscent of before.
On the other hand, the Wintry Alpha King appears even paler in the sunlight, more spiritless, more gloomy than death itself.
His enormous figure leaves her breathless as she sees that he is even scarier than she remembers.
He stands in a military stance in front of his slimmer Beta, further highlighting his size.
The Wolf King also presents his usual austere expression and cold blue veins very visible through his almost transparent skin in his solid and strong muscles.
Suddenly, however, the Alpha turns towards the girl and their eyes meet. A shockwave passes through her, making her jump and look away.
Awkward and afraid of being caught spying on them, Illaria bites her lip worriedly, refusing to turn her head even a millimeter further that way again.
With a command, the driver and Beta Austin are inside the car, and Alpha Zawyer sits in the backseat next to the Alpha Princess.
Illaria doesn't look at him, but her breathing quickens, feeling the place suddenly become more crowded and the air thicker, making it difficult to breathe.
The big SUV looks quite small.
The blonde corners herself even more, trying to get further away from the enormous frightening danger that has placed himself next to her. She almost wants to move to the empty seat in front of them, but she wouldn't have the courage to move at this moment, and it would be even worse with the risk of being stared at by this Alpha's bestial eyes.
Ignoring her reaction, Alpha Zawyer simply dictates to the driver in his constantly stern voice, “Let’s go.”
The journey is long and the silence inside the car is intense, as are the girl's tense feelings.
The most relaxed is the Alpha, working on his cell phone, sending messages and answering calls. However, his Beta seems very worried about his new Luna, and he keeps looking at her and smiling every time their eyes meet through the mirror.
This doesn't help her tension.
More than two hours pass and she is still tense.
Illaria can't even watch the natural changes as they approach the Blood Moon Pack's territory, with the mist appearing between the trees, the icy icicles forming on the branches, or the windows now fogged up, none of it makes her relax. On the contrary, the cold inside the car gets stronger with each passing minute, and she freezes, controlling herself not to show it and start shivering inside her royal summer dress.
But after her second uncontrollable tremor, Beta Austin's voice interrupts the silence to ask: "Alpha..."
And as if he were reading his mind, Alpha Zawyer immediately answer before he finishes: “Yes, you can turn it on.”
The blonde man smiles at his Alpha's cunning, even in the middle of his calls. Austin moves his long, muscular arms to turn on the heater. "Thank you. I think our sunny Luna is not used to this winter weather", he says, taking advantage of his new knowledge about his Alpha's consideration towards his mate, as expected, to make a joke and relax the atmosphere a little.
The little Alpha girl also seems surprised by the Alpha's unhesitating response.
She then turns to him and can't help but thank him for that.
“Thank you, Alpha.” She murmurs softly as she looks at the large man next to her, only to notice that he is still on a call. However, to her surprise, he acknowledges her gratitude with a small nod without exchanging glances.
Illaria lets out a relieved sigh before looking away again.
When Alpha Zawyer ends the call, however, his Beta is promptly waiting to mindlink him with a request: “Hey, Alpha, can I talk to the Luna? She looks so scared…”
“Go ahead,” Alpha Zawyer responds easily, much to Beta Austin's surprise at his quick agreement.
“Uh, so, Luna… uh, do you mind if I ask how old you are?” The Beta asks, resting his elbow on the backrest again and whispering so as not to disturb his Alpha's calls. “I mean, I think you and my mate will be great friends. She will be very excited to meet you.” He gives the princess his usual confident smile and she smiles back.
But Illaria really couldn't understand how this Beta could speak so normally around this mortal Alpha King.
While she hesitates to begin speaking and muster the courage to find her voice again in the presence of such an Alpha King, his hoarse voice overshadows her as he responds to his Beta's curiosity on his own. “She will be 18 in ten days.” He repeats as she had announced to him before.
“Oh really, so young.” The Beta man looks at his Alpha with a greater informality than Illaria thought possible around him, which makes her greatly admire this guy’s bravery. “So, Luna, your mate is basically 10 years older than you; It’s an interesting gap, huh?”
Illaria had no idea how old Alpha Zawyer was until now; he looked young enough to be mortal and old enough to be a legend. But now, thinking of him as 27 years old almost makes him seem like a real person.
Still, she certainly wouldn't want to utter a single word about him with him beside her like now and draw his attention to herself...
So the young princess just remains quiet and the Beta realizes he should continue.
“Well, my mate is Helena. You can call her Lena. She's 22 years old, but she's the coolest Beta around; you'll see." The way his smug smile looks so cheerful as he talks about his mate makes him seem even cooler; and it makes a soft smile grow on the dreamy Illaria, as it always did when she heard someone talk about a true mate.
“She also has beautiful light eyes like yours, but hers are blue.”
At this point, the Alpha interrupts his call and can't help but turn towards the girl.
The mute princess also turns to him, as if in synchronization, but with her eyes wide, which easily reminds him of the greenish puddle she has inside her iris, of which his Beta was talking about.
Quite a breathtaking sight indeed, he notes with a suck of air.
The Alpha gazes into her eyes for a long time, without any expression in his imposing gaze, making it very difficult to understand what he was doing.
To the girl, it seems like if she moved any muscle, he would kill her, so she just stands still under his gaze, breathless and with scared eyes. Only when he returns to the phone, hearing a new call, does the girl allow herself to breathe again, which comes back audibly.
She blushes completely, even more so realizing that the Beta's eyes are still on her, but he's probably waiting for some response to something he said that she has no idea about.
How is she supposed to hide the effect this Alpha has on her?!? Illaria wonders in a less than hopeful manner. And then she was trained her whole life to keep her emotions in check!
Surely she is even more scared seeing that she had no chance of doing that around him.
From there, the blonde hears his deep voice again, diverting her attention from the Beta back to him.
Despite being as serious as always, this time his Alpha voice is softer, unlike all the other times she has heard him before, including all the other phonecalls in which he spoke in military terms and blurted out commands and decisions.
But not this time.
Now he's informal and - almost - smooth.
"Hey, I'm heading to the Packhouse. I can be at Martial Rank in 30 minutes, meet me there."
And a second later:
“No, Xavier, there is nothing you need to worry about. In fact, it is a solution.”
The little girl is still looking at him when he ends the call with a “See you later.”
Illaria finds herself paying attention to his conversation, curious to know who this person is that he doesn't seem to command like everyone else.
Then, afraid that he will turn his eyes on her, she lowers her head and looks at her hands, playing with her fingers to hide the realization of what she was doing. But at this moment, Illaria hears the Beta clear his throat.
“Oh… I'm sorry. Did you ask me something, Beta Austin?” Illaria hurries to apologize, her voice weak and still astonished by all the excessive stimuli around her, and especially by the way this Alpha keeps her in another dimension. To the point that only then did she remember that there were still two other men in the car.
“Oh no, it’s okay, Luna, I was just saying…”
“Leave her alone for now, Austin. I think she has enough to deal with by now.”
“Ah, of course, Alpha…” He looks a little disappointed at having his fun cut short.
But the Alpha Princess could almost thank Alpha Zawyer for that now, as she didn't feel able or want to think about saying anything just yet. She really preferred to be able to stay quiet, because in addition to feeling exhausted, she had already realized that doing anything around this Alpha was a very intense activity for her.
In fact, it seemed exhausting for her spirit to even be close to such a legendary and dangerous aura, especially as close as now! Because this required her entire body to be constantly on the defensive and alert.
Illaria was already completely drained, the poor princess just wanted this day to end once and for all, even though she had no idea what she could still expect and it stung her skin in terrifying and painful ways. Because what if when they were alone he turned out to be the monster she feared so much? What if he threw her in a dungeon? What if there were torturers there like her father or something even worse? Illaria trembles in a weak breath and blinks a few times containing a few tears while focusing on the view outside the window again.
She could do it, she would find a way. She mentally repeats to herself.
Fortunately, it doesn't take long for them to see some distance away, at the foot of a large mountain, a large white castle surrounded by a winter garden.
As soon as the car stops, the Alpha gets out of it and waits for the Alpha Princess to do the same, holding the door for her. She would be shivering in the freezing cold outside if he didn't immediately begin to casually wrap his arms around her. The young she-wolf is startled and squeaks softly when she sees that huge body of him come around her, pulling her against his solid, muscular chest.
Alpha Zawyer then murmurs in his low tone. “It’s okay.”
Then he turns to his Beta.
“Austin, wait for me in the parking lot. If you go in, Helena won’t let you out, and I still need you today.”
“Yes, of course, my Alpha.”
Illaria swallows hard, still in her place, and realizes, now surrounded by his arms, that this Ice King’s body is nowhere near as cold as it seems. In fact, the heat of his absolute aura’s power is fiery.
“Uh, then, have a good night, Luna. I'm sure Lena will help you settle in and feel at home. It's so good to have a Luna, isn't it, Alpha?” Beta Austin says with a goofy grin and winks at the girl, who remains in a tense, statue-like position within her new Alpha's arms.
With a small nod to the Beta, Illaria keeps her eyes blank and ignoring the way her body is attached to the Alpha’s, at least ignoring it as much as she can. When the Beta is out of sight, the Alpha turns her to face him.
Placing both of his hands around the girl's face, Alpha Zawyer stares at her as he leans in and watches her eyes wide.
“If you behave like this, it will be difficult for them to believe that you are really my mate, and we will not be able to go through with this plan.” The scolding in his voice is surprisingly soft, in a way Illaria has never heard, even if it still sounds with that usual low, crackling tone of his. Alpha Zawyer then leans in more and puts his mouth to her ear as he whispers. “And I don’t think that’s what you want, Princess Warren, is it? So relax next to me, Luna.”
He puts more weight on the last word and Illaria can only nod, agitated.
She was trying her best, and although her Alpha instincts were screaming at her to strengthen herself, her 'already completely exhausted' human body and mind just wanted to give up on this day. It had been too much to find the strength now to raise her voice or even speak against this massive presence again.
But, to her surprise, Alpha Zawyer keeps the hold of her face in his gigantic hands and kisses her forehead with such care and tenderness that it makes her feel like she's made of porcelain.
It was almost like a burning cold feather slowly rubbing against her forehead.
The young princess sucks in air, her jaw drops and her heart flutters with a mixture of surprise and burning.
It's a seemingly simple gesture, but it fills her with a feeling of protection and security, a kind of relief she wishes she could count on forever! And how much more she didn't need that at that moment!!!
And this feeling lasts longer than she could have expected, the Alpha King lingers in the gesture for a few more seconds and the girl closes her eyes, relaxing there in ways that are incomprehensible to herself. After what seems like the most unexpected oasis she has ever experienced, Illaria blinks her eyes a few times, realizing that she is back in her old reality as she feels him slowly becoming detached.
The Alpha's crackling voice makes her skin crawl even more, if that was possible at this point, when she hears him say, still very close to her face:
“My Wolves are watching,” is an explanation in the lowest tone that Alpha Zawyer possesses, as soon as his lips slowly release themselves from her soft skin, and he sees the girl’s blinking eyes coming to meet his, little by little.
Nodding Illaria turns to the guards surrounding the Packhouse, being washed by a bath of reality.
She nods again, facing him, faltering as she faces the King’s stoic countenance, but he doesn't falter for a second as he wraps his strong arm around her slim waist, hugging her around her tiny corset and guiding her up the stairs, to the entrance of his Castle.
