One's just deserts
The gods of Mount Olympus were shocked and appalled when the rumor circulated that Hera, the queen of the gods, had left her home and her husband, the mighty Zeus. It seemed impossible that a marriage that had endured so many millennia could come to an end.
After leaving the palace, Hera sought comfort with her friend and confidante Aphrodite. As she confided her sorrow and pain to the goddess of love, the story of betrayal unfolded.
Hera recounted how she had found Zeus in a secluded clearing in the woods, in the company of a young, beautiful woman. She had endured Zeus' unfaithfulness in the past, and had even forgiven him. But this time, the hurt felt so much deeper. Hera had thought that Zeus had truly changed, and his behavior had been perfect for so long. But it seemed that he had returned to his old ways.
Hera:
Ah, why do I suffer so?
Where is the love I once held dear?
My husband's faithfulness long gone,
Torn away like a broken spear.
Aphrodite:
My dear, why must you grieve so?
Your sorrows have made me weep.
Your husband's betrayal so strong,
It's a burden too hard to keep.
Hera:
He has stolen my love,
Broken my heart,
And left me here to weep,
My trust shattered and torn apart.
Aphrodite:
My love, your struggles I can see,
Your pain I can understand.
Your husband's faithlessness so great,
It tears at my heart and soul...
Hera:
My world has been turned upside down,
My trust misplaced and abused.
My husband, the one I adored,
My love he has so abused.
Aphrodite:
My dearest, I feel your pain,
Your sorrows I do share.
Let us hope that love will win,
And your husband will repair.
The sun has set and Zeus returned home, only to find it empty and devoid of the honey-like voice of his precious lover. Finding it strange, he started calling for his wife.Silence was interrupted by a sultry voice of Hestia, goddess of home. Hestia has came promptly after hearing gossip echoing around the whole Mountain. "Hera is no longer here.", she said compassionately. "Where is she? Has something happened?", Zeus inquired desperately. "Hera is with Aphrodite at the moment,"Hestia answered,"she left in tears this afternoon." Before he could ask another question, Hestia disappeared. Burdened by pain and confusion, he looked up to the sky.
Zeus:
The sky weeps as I look up to the heavens,
For I have been abandoned and left in my distress.
My beloved Hera, she fled our home,
And left me here all alone.
The fields of lavender and the lilacs of spring,
That once brought us both joy, now only bring
The sorrow I feel in my very soul,
For no one to share in my anguish and toll.
The lonesome night sky's silence rings loud,
Like a reminder of the verbal battles we had.
The oak tree's rustle in the wind,
Reminds me of the love we once had to find.
I see the stars in the dark night's sky,
A reminder of the times we use to lie
In the meadow and just talk,
Now I'm left here with the moon and to walk.
Oh, why must a love so sweet and pure,
Come to such a sorrowful end?
I will never get the answers I seek,
Unless I find the courage to go and seek.
I must journey and find my lost love,
For I am willing to rise up above.
No matter the cost,
I will fight and persevere,
To reclaim my love
and bring back what was once here.
